Part 2: Retail therapy in Maximum city

The flight to Mumbai was uneventful. The girls were thrilled about the shopping expedition - Najma had the low-down on the city's 'in' stores and with Zoya as her stylist, she was all set to swipe her way to a new holiday wardrobe!

Just after the flight landed, Dilshad called to update Asad. "We've reached beta. We'll head to the hotel for lunch, rest for a while and go shopping at 4:00."

"Okay Ammi… I might join you if I finish early," Asad replied.

"Fine, I'll call you when we head out," Dilshad answered, trying to conceal her surprise. Now that was a first! Asad willingly joining them on a shopping spree!

Najma was trying on a pair of linen capris when Asad sauntered in, looking sexy in tan leather loafers, a white shirt and beige suit. He lifted his sunshades as he entered the store and raised his eyebrows in appreciation.

"Okay?" Najma queried, seeking approval from her brother.

"Perfect!" Asad replied. "And I hope you're getting a couple of tees to go with that."

"Yup, I'm getting this, a pair of capris and a sun dress, and some tops," Najma rattled off. "I'm going to need footwear and some accessories – maybe a tote, a hat, a scarf and a pair of shades. And a swimsuit"

Asad grinned. This was so Najma of the ol' days. "Whatever you want, Tamatar. I'm glad you have two days, that's quite a list huh!"

Thrilled with her brother's approval, Najma headed to the store across.

Dilshad and Asad exchanged glances. He knew Ammi was happy to see Najma like this.

"Ammi, why don't you get something?" he asked.

"Me?!" Dilshad eyes widened in horror.

Asad glanced at Zoya. She was unusually quiet today. "Maybe she'll listen to you, Ms. Farooqui."

"Phuphi… if you're game, you might want to try on those slim pants with that tunic top. And you could team it up with a scarf if you like," Zoya pointed at the apparel as she spoke hesitantly. Was this a test? The minute she suggested something, Mr. Khan would pounce on her and belittle her modern sensibilities!

Dilshad's eyes lightened up, as she studied the ensemble. Just like Zoya to know what I might like. But she looked sideways at Asad for his reaction.

"Ammi, that's… nice. I think you should try it," Asad remarked as he led Dilshad towards Zoya. "Ms. Farooqui, if you don't mind, would you help Ammi with it, please?"

Zoya's jaw dropped. Asad had complimented her choice of outfit for his mother, and he trusted her to do something right! "Sure, Mr. Khan… I've love to help Phuphi," she replied graciously.

"Asad…" he offered and smiled. "Call me Asad."

"Oh in that case, it's Zoya," she responded. Would wonders never cease? Was it Mumbai magic… something about this city and this guy had loosened up completely!

Asad headed to the men's section and did a quick check of what he'd need. Thirty minutes was all it took – he was set for the weekend.

When he returned, Dilshad stood in front of a mirror, looking youthful, in a blue tunic top and white pants, teamed with a two-toned blue-green scarf. Wow! That was his beautiful mom!

Dilshad couldn't believe her eyes. It wasn't very different from what she normally wore… the top was definitely shorter but still a decent length. She was comfortable; more importantly, the look of wonder on Asad's face sealed the deal.

Zoya looked wistfully at the unspoken interaction between the mother-son duo; her eyes glistened with tears even as she smiled. It was great to see Phuphi so happy.

She stepped away, scared Dilshad would notice and pretended to admire a top in the window.

"Here… you might need this," Asad's deep voice drew her attention. He held out a pristine white handkerchief.

Their eyes met and Zoya was startled to see empathy in his. She sniffled and fought back the tears.

"I'm sorry… I didn't mean to tear up like that. I don't want to spoil Phuphi's and Najma's moods – they're so excited," Zoya whimpered.

"Zoya… are you ok? I noticed you haven't been yourself," Asad asked her softly. He wiped the tears off her cheeks. "Don't worry… Ammi's gone to change. She's taking all the stuff you matched for her. And Najma isn't here." Maybe he was wrong about this girl after all… her concern for his family was so endearing.

"Listen… I know we're not friends, but if you want a patient ear, I'm around," Asad offered with genuine concern.

Zoya nodded, "Thanks, that's really nice of you. I'll keep that in mind." Grouchy Asad was easier to resist, but this charming guy was… irresistible.

"By the way, Zoya aren't you shopping? Or you've already got stuff from back home?" Asad enquired, aiming for a mood change.

"Oh, no I didn't. But I don't know Mr. I mean Asad," she replied.

"I think you should indulge in retail therapy once in a while, Zoya," Asad said jokingly, trying to lighten the mood. "If you're ok with it, I'd like to buy you something you like… just my way of thanking you for making Ammi and Tamatar so happy."

"You don't have to! It was lovely to see them like this. I enjoyed it," Zoya explained earnestly.

"But I want to… so… please let me," Asad was insistent. "Ammi, don't you think Zoya should get something too?" he looked beyond her, at Dilshad who was approaching them.

"Of course… Zoya, beta I know you haven't brought summer wear to Bhopal, so please let's buy something for you," Dilshad implored.

Zoya was cornered. She couldn't say no to Phuphi and Asad knew that. She looked at him and the grin on his face was like that of a cat that had got its cream!

"I'm going to get you for this, Mr. Khan," she whispered. "Ok Phuphi… I'll just get a few things, and please let me buy them."

"No… you're like my daughter, and you're not paying!" Dilshad was definitely Asad's mother when it came to being insistent.

They browsed around for a bit and Zoya found this lovely pair of white shorts. Dilshad picked a sky-blue sleeveless top and held it up in front of Zoya. "Zoya, do you wear sleeveless tops back home?"

"Occasionally," Zoya answered.

"Great, this is an occasion! I'm buying this for you. And I'm not taking no for an answer." Dilshad's expression brooked no argument.

Zoya hugged Dilshad on impulse, "Thank you, Phuphs!"

They bought a few more outfits - a sundress and a flowing skirt, and just as they headed to bill their purchases, Zoya's eyes fell on a steel grey romper.

Asad noticed. "That would look good on you, if I may say so," he leaned in closer and whispered.

Zoya turned instantly and looked at him in surprise. "Uh…. No I haven't worn anything that short before; at least not outside the pool."

Dilshad noticed the interaction and smiled to herself, and left the two to it.

"It's Goa… and we have the place to ourselves. If you're worried about my being around, well I'll head out for the day even at short notice," Asad joked.

"Uh… no, you don't have to go…" Zoya said hurriedly, and blushed as she realized what that implied.

"Try it on, at least you'll know what you look like in it," Asad coaxed. Turning to the store attendant he asked, "Could you get one of that in her size, please?"

Zoya was tempted. She headed to the fitting room, romper in hand. She tried it on – it was knee-length… modest enough. A V-neck with loose sleeves, it was cinched at the waist with a thin matching belt. Gosh! It was comfortable and sexy!

"Phuphs, I'd like you to take a look," she called out, keen on a second opinion.

"Just one minute, Ma'am," the enthusiastic attendant answered.

Before Zoya could clarify, a confused Asad was led in by the attendant who was beaming up at him, "Your wife was asking for you, Mr. Khan."

Asad frowned. "You mean my mom?"

"No, this beautiful lady," the attendant pointed to Zoya, who was now beet-red all over, embarrassed by the attendant's gaffe and Asad's eyes on her.

Asad couldn't take his eyes off her. "You look gorgeous… we're getting that."

Zoya blushed a deeper hue of red. "No Asad… I'm not sure."

"He's right Mrs. Khan… you look lovely!" the attendant offered. "I'll have one of that packed for you."

As she left them, Asad and Zoya realized neither had bothered to correct her.

"I'll go get changed." Zoya excused herself.

"Mmm… yeah… I'll be waiting outside," Asad nodded. "I hope you're feeling better."

"Oh yeah, a whole lot better," she answered and smiled. "Thank you."

Later as Zoya slipped into her jeans, she pondered… Mrs. Khan… Zoya Asad Khan… mmm, it had a nice ring to it.

Ah...charming Asad...yup totally agree with Zoya, he's IRRESISTIBLE!<3
