Check the verses of Surah Nahel 20-21
Those unto whom they cry beside Allah created naught, but are themselves created. (20) (They are) dead, not living. And they know not when they will be raised. (21)

Surah Zumar verses 43-44
Or choose they intercessors other than Allah? Say: What! Even though they have power over nothing and have no intelligence? (43) Say: Unto Allah belongeth all intercession. His is the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. And afterward unto Him ye will be brought back. (44)

example of those who call any one else except Allah in prayers

The likeness of those who choose other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider's house, if they but knew. (41) Surah Ankabut

for Ahadith, check under the following heading pls in the given link
Chapter 47: FORBIDDANCE TO BUILD MOSQUES ON THE GRAVES AND DECORATING THEM WITH PICTURES AND FORBIDDANCE TO USE THE GRAVES AS MOSQUES

http://qurango.com/muslim/004.smt.html

Still if people goes to shrines / graves of walis (pious people) for seeking help or praying it has nothing to do with islam and its an Bidah(invention), which is strictly forbidden by Prophet Mohammad Peace be upon Him. Going on grave is not forbidden but praying there or seeking their help considering them they can help them beside Allah; is Shirk.

We can ask some one to pray for us if he/she is alive but can't go to shrines or some place like that as its Shirk (making partners with Allah) and Allah said in Quran

Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray. (Quran 4:116)

Shirk can only be forgiven after repentance and no one is allowed to make partners with Allah...when people go to shrines, that's due to a believe that those dead people are listening and can sort out their problem or can help in sorting out that.

WHICH IS NOT ALLOWED IN ISLAM...DO NOT JUDGE ISLAM ON THE BASE OF WHAT MEDIA PRESENT AS IT MISINTERPRET IT MOST OF THE TIMES, IF YOU REALLY WANNA KNOW, CHECK THE BOOK

in above link you can find Quran with different languages translations and recitations in the voice of different qaries...You are most welcome to contact me if you need to ask any thing, I will get back in my free time (for islamic answers it requir to find ref which can take time so it could be a delayed answer)

But whether or not you visit a Mizaar...depends on your cultural influences Mariam.
I know many Arabs...especially from Saudia...are more careful than muslims from other parts of the world to avoid Bidah and anything they remotely affiliate with polytheism.
But there is plenty of shiite influences in the Arab world too...so polytheistic influences have crept in.
And there are plenty of shrines in the Arab world too. I myself visited Jordan and went to visit the site of the battle of Muaata (I don't know correct spelling)...where there is a mosque which ecompasses the shrines of 3 great Sahabis...Jaffer bin Abi Talib, Zaid Bin Harith, and Abdullah bin Rawaha (Again excuse the spelling)...people come and offer their respects there.
Similarly I've been to Jerusalem and other parts of Palestine...and many people come and visit the graves of the different prophets and even Sahabis burried there...and pay their respects.
Just like the prophets spread Islam...these saints are revered in various parts of India for doing the same...and so people honor and respect them.
Like I said...a lot of cutlural influences are there...and sometimes a fine line of demarcation exists between true belief and Bidah...but you cannot automatically label something as such.
It all depends on the intention...and that is only for God to judge.

Thanks hukshila! Good that you took time to answer the question😊
I am also very much against going to graves to make wishes. I don't have much knowledge about Islam but i do know that its wrong to do such thing. However my parents are originally from a village in Pakistan. In their village everyone has very litle knowledge about Islam and therefore everyone goes to such graves to make wishes...which i find very sad..don't really know how to handle something like that...they kind of make fun of you when you try to reason with them...somehow they feel that they have better knowledge about Islam just because they live in a muslim country...
