Chapter 14

When Abhay and Pia told T about Jeev's story, she sat wondering for a long time and then finally spoke: I think it's time we get in touch with Bijoy, Jeev and Ruhi also. Jeev's story has given a completely different perspective to this case. And we need to know who is speaking the truth. Because if Jeev's story turns out to be untrue, then he will become our prime suspect, but if he is indeed speaking the truth, then we need to think in a completely new direction.

Abhay asked her: But how do we find out about them? Aneglo is in Italy, and no one even knows about Bijoy.

Pia: But someone has to know about Bijoy. Let's take Kabir's help in this matter. He can help us search him out.

T: And I think one of us will have to go to Italy too and meet Angelo.

Abhay: oh come on T. Kabir may be able to help us in finding Bijoy, but how on Earth are we going to find Angelo in Italy. We don't even know anyone there.

T: but we can find his old address from the club he visited 18 years back, and start our search from there.

Abhay and Pia looked at T in amazement and asked: Is that even possible? Would that club have such old records?

T: We can at least try and the current manager of the club is my friend's husband, so I can ask for his help.

Pia: Ok then and I think we should place another ad ' this time for Ruhi. I think it's really important for us to ask her about Maya too. She was the one who suspected any foul play, so we do need her opinions as to why she suspected anything.

Having decided on this course of action, the trio set into action. While Abhay called up Kabir and asked for his help in tracing Bijoy, T went to meet the manager of the club which Angelo had visited 18 years back and Pia contacted the newspaper office to place an ad for Ruhi. Within 3 days, the ad was placed, the old address of Angelo found and the current address of Bijoy was found. They decided to first meet Bijoy who was running a travel agency in Mumbai these days. They called up his travel agency and fixed an appointment with him.

Bijoy met them with a slightly guarded air around him. It seemed as if he himself was suspecting them of something. His eyes clearly told what a shrewd businessman he was. But he was straight forward in his approach and directly asked: Mr. Raichand, I believe that you wish to travel to Italy.

Abhay: that's right.

Bijoy: but may I ask why you have chosen our agency only considering that it's so far from your own home and I believe there are lots of good travel agencies around your home, so why didn't you contact any of them?

Abhay: Actually your agency was suggested to me by one of my brother in law's friend.

Bijoy: indeed! What was his name? I am sure you don't remember it. By the way why you insisted on meeting me personally? This tour of yours could have easily been arranged by one of my agents from the comfort of your own home. Why did you bother coming all the way to this corner of the city to meet me?

Abhay: Well I always want to be sure whom I am dealing with myself. So it was important for me to meet you before I spent any money buying your services.

Bijoy: Mr. Raichand, I would have understood your concern had you been going on a world tour involving lakhs of rupees. But considering that you are undertaking just a 3 day tour which is going to cost you not more than 1 lakh rupees and 60% of which would go in tickets alone, I wonder why would a rich young achiever like you would bother so much? Tell me the truth Mr. Raichand. Why exactly you wanted to meet me in person?

Pia decided to take matters in her own hands and spoke: Actually it was me who wanted to meet you to know if you have any knowledge of my step-mom's whereabouts. I believe you used to date her in her younger days.

Bijoy replied coolly: I don't think I could help you on that. I have dated many young girls in the past, and I hardly remember any particular one.

Pia: but maybe you remember her.

Bijoy: Why do you think I would remember her? Was there any special reason why she would have stand out in my memory amongst the countless women in my life? What was her name anyway?

Pia replied: Maya! Maya Sharma.

Bijoy was taken back for a moment, but he quickly composed himself and replied: I never dated her. She was just a vacation friend. But even our friendship never lasted long since her overprtective fool of a guaridan suspected us to be dating and got me fired from my job on false accusations.

Pia: But how come you did not date her, considering that you yourself was such a casanova and she was equally crazy about men..

Bijoy started laughing at this and spoke in between laughs: Maya.. and men crazy...???Which idiot told you that? Maya was least interested in boys. Maybe my bad reputation gave her a bad name, but she never was interested in me or any other guy.

Pia(a little shocked): But then why did she befriend you?

Bijoy: Because she was different from the rest of the girls in Pune. Rather than waste her time on idle gossipping or discussing boys, she wanted to use her vacations constructively and wanted to learn some sport. Well, I boasted of being good at tennis and expressed my willingness to train her and that's how we became friends and started spending time together during her training sessions. But she soon saw through my farce and realized that I am hardly good at tennis and so she decided not to come anymore. But the same day the doctor also reported me to my boss and got me fired.

It was Abhay who spoke up then: It's strange that you remember the only girl you did not apparently date amongst the many girls you claim to have dated and forgotten.

Bijoy: On the contrary, the fact that she was the only girl whom I could not charm, make her memories clear in my mind. But I don't get it. Why are you asking me all this after so many years?

Pia replied: Actually I am trying to loacate her. I heard that she ran away with someone 18 years back, leaving my Dad heartbroken. I was just wondering if I could trace her now.

Bijoy: ya I had heard that, though I could not believe it myself. But I still don't get it, why you came to me? Is it that you suspected me to be the one she ran away with, then sorry to dissappoint you, that was not so and I don't even have any idea who he could be. As Maya was just not that type. She always desired a loving family and a mature sensible husband which she got in your father. She was a truly domestic type of a lady, certainly not my type.

Pia: Did you know my father? I mean did you ever visit us?

Bijoy: As a matter of fact I visited them just a day before Maya disappeared. Your father was planning to leave Mumbai and settle somewhere else and happened to come across my agency. I had just started this business and so used to visit clients personally.

Pia(a little shocked): What??? Dad was planning to leave Mumbai? Did Maya know about it, I mean was she happy about it, or do you think Dad got a hint of her affair and that's why wanted to move away from here?

Bijoy: Surprisingly, it was Maya who was desperate to leave the city. Your father was actually looking tired at her edginess. Yes, she was quite nervous and almost looked scared. When she first saw that it was me, she did not really knew what to do, but then she decided to trust me and implored me to arrange for their departure as soon as possible and that too in secret. I had promised her that and had started making the arrangements, but the very next day she ran away. It was a complete shock for me.

Abhay asked: But if you were so shocked, then did you not try to find what exactly happened, since you even noticed that she was afraid of something or someone?

Bijoy: My dear, Maya's disappearance had alreay upset my just picking up business and reputation. Plus I never had much good records with Police (don't mention it to anyone else please), and moreover her husband himself went into shock I heard, then what could I do about it? It was not my concern. And I guess I have told you all that I could about Maya. Now if you will please excuse me, I have other work to attend to.

Abhay and Pia also left from there with new questions running in their heads. It was Pia who spoke first:

Abhay, what do you think, could it be Bijoy? He was present there just then. Maybe that sudden meeting with her, aroused that revenge feeling inside him.

Abhay spoke solemnly: That could be true Pia. But I am surprised as to how closely Bijoy's and Jeev's assessment of Maya's character match. Even though both these people are poles apart in their own lives and characters.

Pia asked Abhay what he meant by that, to which Abhay replied: I wish I knew Pia, or should I say I wish I knew why I am thinking what I am thinking Pia.

But before Pia could ask for an explanation to what Abhay said, their attention was diverted by the ringing of Abhay's cell.
