~~Chapter 6~~

Abhay was unpacking the small bag on the wooden table facing the window; it was just 9 o'clock, but not a soul was outside. He took out his laptop and set it on the table.

Shaurya Singh came and stood alongside Abhay, looked out the window and said restfully, "It's even more tranquil and silent at night, isn't it?"

Abhay looked up from his occupation to see a very isolated ground outside the window, with thickets of trees here and there. "I think even graveyards must have more people walking around at night than this town," he said dryly and returned his attention to taking out all the laptop accessories.

Shaurya Singh chuckled; then he placed a slightly wrinkled hand on Abhay's shoulder.

"I'm glad we found such a peaceful place."

Abhay looked at him with a strangely pitying expression. "The peace is not going to last for long, Baba….you know it as well as I do…"

"But few people know we have moved here, so surely this time…"Shaurya Singh began to say desperately, and then stopped, realizing he didn't believe what he was saying himself.

"You don't need to be so distressed, Baba…" Abhay said comfortingly, "after all, we've managed just fine so far…"

Shaurya Singh smiled a little, "Yes…we have"

"I think you should go to bed now, it's been a long day."

Shaurya Singh agreed and returned to his room. He started to walk towards his bed, then changed his mind on an impulse, and made his way to his suitcase which was on the table. He opened it and removed a thick layer of clothing to reveal a small black velvet box which had been placed right in the middle of all his other possessions, to protect it from any kind of harm.

He picked it up reverentially and held it in the middle of his palms, holding it as if what it contained was priceless and of incomparable value. He remained still for a minute, ruminating….maybe Abhay wouldn't refuse to keep it this time….

When he returned to the room he saw Abhay still engrossed in emptying the bag of its contents, his back to the door. He made his way silently to the cupboard in the room, which was right opposite the door. He had opened the cupboard door soundlessly and was just about to keep the box on the third shelf, which was at the same height as him, when Abhay spoke.

"Not in my room, Baba," he said quietly. "It will remain with you, as always."

Shaurya Singh stopped halfway through placing the box and looked around. Abhay hadn't even turned once or paused in his unpacking to see what Shaurya Singh was holding and trying to keep in his room. He didn't need to.

Shaurya Singh drew back dejectedly from the cupboard with the box still in hand.

He took a few steps towards the door, but just before he crossed the threshold, he halted.

And in one of the rare occasions when his emotions got the better of decades of training, he asked with something close to despair, "When will you forgive, Abhay."

"Never," Abhay answered coldly.

Disappointed but not surprised, Shaurya Singh gripped the box tightly as if to comfort it and returned to his room.

His footsteps receded and then Abhay heard the door to Shaurya Singh's room close.

Now that he was sure he would be alone for some time, he took out a roughly made wooden case from the bag.

Holding the box, which hardly covered the size of his palm, as if it were made of glass, Abhay opened it with great care; a very plain, thin gold chain lay inside. He didn't take it out, but stood gazing at it for some time. Then he walked over to the tall cupboard, placed it in the topmost shelf and locked the door.

This was least expensive of his belongings. But it was his most cherished possession...infinitely precious...more treasured than life itself...

*******************************************

Pia woke up at the crack of dawn, feeling exhausted due to inadequate sleep. She freshened up and swept and swabbed the house as was her daily practice before taking her bath. When she finished, she went to the kitchen.

"I'm going to Chinten to clean the house ma"

Immersed in cooking, Madhu murmured agreement before registering the tiredness in her daughter's voice. She called out to Pia to stop before she had reached the door. When Pia turned, her mother was shocked at how pale she looked. She took the broom from her hand and insisted that she sleep for a little while longer. Pia protested vehemently, but for once her mother wouldn't give in and she was bundled off to bed; she fell asleep within minutes.

She woke up with very little time to leave for college and had to dress up in a tearing hurry. When she reached the campus, she was still lost in thought, and didn't realize when she passed by a small group of two girls and a boy, all of whom had waved to her and then exchanged puzzled looks when she didn't return their smiles.

When she was going to walk past them completely, one of the girls yelled impatiently, "Hey!! Do you remember us!!"

Pia came out of her reverie with a start and saw herself face to face with a very indignant trio of Misha, Ruhi and Aryan.

"Hi! I didn't see you three!" she smiled dazzlingly at all them, wondering how she was going to escape explaining what she had been thinking about.

"We noticed that," Misha said sarcastically. "Now can we know what you were thinking about so deeply that you didn't see two friends you've known for 15 years and one friend whom you've known for 8 months?"

"That's 8 months and 17 days," Aryan said crossly.

"Yes…that makes a lot of difference," Ruhi nodded patronizingly, "but come back to the point, people." She turned to Pia, "So…what were you…" then she stopped and asked abruptly, "Did the tenants come yesterday…"

"Yes, they did, and they both are really nice and sweet," Pia said brightly.

"That smile on your face, it's too bright," Misha said suspiciously, "and Ruhi didn't ask you if they were nice or not. Come with us, we'll stand in a corner of the ground. We need to talk."

"I agree with Sherlock Holmes," Aryan said as they made their way to a quiet corner on the huge playground in front of the college, "What's wrong, pia? Is it something to do with the tenants?"

"Is it the uncle? Is he weird? Or is it the nephew? Oh! I forgot to ask!" Ruhi said excitedly, "Is he cute? Handsome?"

"Like some wise person said a little while ago," Misha said loudly, "let's come back to the point people."

"I was just asking for general information," Ruhi said in an injured tone.

"That's enough you two…" Aryan interrupted, "What happened, Pia"

"It's nothing serious," Pia said, trying to sound lighthearted, "You remember that letter aunty had sent for me?" All three nodded.

"She has asked me to become friends with the new tenants, and make them part of our family."

"So what's the problem," Misha asked, confused, "You have always made friends as easily as Ruhi has had crushes."

Ruhi had opened her mouth to protest this grave insult when Pia answered even more uneasily, "I…I don't know if….Shaurya uncle is really sweet and kind and we are already friends, but Abhay is…"

"Abhay…Wowww What a Beautiful Name," Ruhi interrupted dreamily, but then saw Misha and Aryan glaring at her and immediately changed her expression and tone, and asked very attentively, "So what were you saying, Pia …?"

"He's…He's not very friendly," Pia finished uncomfortably.

There was silence for some seconds.

Then Misha said, "This is the first time you've actually said someone was unfriendly - he must really be standoffish."

"Was he rude to you, Pia?" Aryan asked angrily. "He was, wasn't he? What did he say? I'm coming with you when you go home and I'll set him straight."

"Oh no Aryan, you don't need to do that," Pia said hastily; it had been a mistake to talk about it in front of him. Aryan usually feared and hated any kind of conflicts or confrontations and went out of his way to avoid them. But he was very protective of her and was perfectly capable of actually coming home and demanding an explanation from Abhay. The idea was really alarming, and it was not Abhay she was afraid for….

"He wasn't rude at all. It was my mistake actually; I went looking for something in Chinten without knowing they had come and were inside. He didn't know me of course, and he thought I was….so you see, it wasn't his fault. That was all that happened," she said with as much sincerity as possible.

"You're not lying, are you? Is that really all that happened" Ruhi asked suspiciously. "Your fingers aren't crossed again?"

Pia grinned and held up her hands for inspection, while mentally crossing her fingers and begging her friends for forgiveness.

"It's ok… I am sure I'll become friends with him also very soon," Pia said cheerfully, attempting to lighten the atmosphere and change the topic, "Come on, let's go to class or we'll get late."

As her friends reluctantly let the subject drop and they made their way into the college, Pia wondered how many more lies she was going to have to utter today.

*****************************************************

Pia stopped at the family temple on her way home. She had made her decision but needed lot of courage to follow it through and hoped her favourite deity would make her brave enough to do what she had to do.

She stepped onto the temple's threshold and rang the huge brass bell at its entrance. It took her some time to reach the idol, as there were quite a few friends and neighbours who wanted to converse, complain about not having met her for some days, and also interrogate her about the new residents of Chinten. She chatted cheerfully and answered their questions about Shaurya Singh and Abhay as best as she could. And then at last she was standing in front of the ancient stone sculpture of Vishnu, who was smiling so benignly and compassionately at her. She closed her eyes and prayed for a long time, and when she stepped out of the temple to go home, it was with a calm and resolute heart.

Two hours later Pia came out of Prashant, after having given herself a long motivational talk in anticipation of the forthcoming difficult conversation. Thankfully, she saw she didn't need to go inside Chinten.

Abhay was sitting in the courtyard outside in the enjoyable warmth of the winter sun on a comfortable cane chair, working intently on his laptop that rested on the little round centre table, which he had transferred from the living room, in front of him. There was a teacup next to the laptop. Abhay absentmindedly reached for it, and was about to bring it to his lips when he realized it was empty. And he slowly placed the cup back, his eyes still on the screen.

Pia hesitated for a minute and then went back into the house. When she came out again, she had a cup of tea in her hands. She said a silent prayer to all the gods she knew and opened the connecting gate into Chinten's courtyard, valiantly disregarding the fact that her hands and feet were turning colder with every step.

Abhay looked up at the sound of the gate opening, and then immediately returned his attention to the laptop. "I knew the peace was too good to last," he muttered loud enough for her to hear, making her courage lesser by half.

But then she remembered aunty's hopeful voice, summoned all of her guts, cheerily said, "Here, this is for you," and held out the cup.

"I don't remember asking you for tea," he said, not looking at her or the cup.

Pia felt her bravado decreasing even further. "You didn't," she answered in a small voice, "but I thought I'll just make some for you….you know, as a token of friendship," she added on a hopeful note.

"I don't remember asking for that either."

She would have to redouble her efforts, though it was a little difficult to know where to start as he was pretending that she wasn't standing there at all.

"Abhay…" she began.

With unconcealed irritation, he shut down the laptop and got to his feet with it.

Pia realized that that he was going to walk away again and she didn't think she would be brave enough to do this again. And in sudden panic, she blurted out, "Dobriyal aunty has sent me a letter, asking me to become friends with you." The second the words left her mouth, she felt horrified at her stupidity; why had she told him that…

Abhay halted and looked at her flustered face. "She did that, did she," he said slowly and with apparent regret, "and here I was…thinking I had come across a non-interfering woman for the first time in my life. I should have known there was no such thing."

"She wasn't trying to interfere," Pia said indignantly, defending aunty, "she really cares for you and wanted to know that you'll have friends and a family when they are no longer here in India."

"Right…that's all very touching," he said irreverently, "but you are telling me all this because…"

"Because I wanted to tell you that I am going to what she asked of me," Pia answered, much to her own amazement, "we are going to become friends."

"We are?" Abhay asked, now sounding genuinely amused, "Thanks for warning me in advance…that was very honourable of you…But you see, I have better things to do than listen to this nonsense." And he started to turn away again.

"I gave aunty my word that we will become friends, Abhay," Pia said firmly, with rising courage. "And I've never broken a promise in my life so far….."

"You know...I have to admit something," Abhay said seriously, "for someone with absolutely no looks and brains, you have great confidence in your self."

Pia sighed in resignation, "You can insult me all you want, but it's not going to change my mind."

Just then the bells rang out in the temple, distracting both for a second. Pia smiled at the sound, "See…even God thinks we should become friends."

"I'm not surprised," he retorted, "That's your family deity, isn't it….has to be as crazy as you. Anyway, I've heard enough of your delusions…" and he strode away, leaving her feeling hurt and indignant.

But, by degrees, pia's initial infuriation at this casual insult of her adored God gradually gave way to a steely determination.

If he thought he could get rid of her this easily in the coming days, then he was in for a surprise…..He might be very stubborn; but if there was no other way out, she too could be a far more determined girl than her appearance suggested.

"This was your last day of solitude in Dehradun, Abhay…" she promised. And at some distance away, the temple bells rang out again….

****************************************************

Pia checked the lock on the front door, and then moved around the ground storey of her house to verify if all the other doors were closed securely. She passed by her grandfather's room while returning after tightly locking the door to the backyard and saw that the lights were on. Her grandfather was sitting on an armchair near his bed, engrossed in reading a spy thriller. He had a whole stack of books on espionage and international intrigue, which were his secret hobby, and which were hidden in one corner of his bedroom. Pia had brought him most of those books with her pocket money, and she also often borrowed books from her friends for him.

Lost in the adventures of the hero who was an intelligence agent, he absentmindedly reached down and rubbed his ankles.

Pia went into the kitchen and took a small bottle of herbal oil, which she then warmed and poured it into a tiny container. She returned to his room, sat down at his feet and gently lifted his feet and placed them in her lap. Then she started to gently massage the warm oil on his ankles, which were swollen due to the cold and also due to standing for long in the temple.

When she looked up, her grandfather was looking at her with a very sweet smile on his face. Pia grinned up at him. "So what's happening in the book, grandpa? Has the hero found out that there is a conspiracy to destroy his country?"

"No…not yet. He's just come across a spaceship in a room in the government office and he's going to go inside to find out if there are any aliens inside. Because the heroine has been kidnapped by some extraterrestrials," grandpa said animatedly, and Pia giggled.

"But you know, there is a lot more mystery in Dehradun these days," he added and laughed. "Everyone who has been coming to the temple has been asking me about Abhay and Shaurya Singh. Some of them came home too, with so many questions, but your mother and I told them that Raghav had strictly instructed they were to be left alone and not be troubled by anyone," her grandpa said smugly.

That would have put an end to any questioning, Pia thought. Raghav uncle's sway in Dehradun had not decreased at all even though he had moved away two years ago. And if people came to know that he had issued an edict, it would be followed without question.

And then abruptly grandpa became a little serious. "You know, I have a little suspense to solve myself," he said slowly. "Ever since I've seen Abhay, I've been thinking about this. I know for sure I have never seen him before. But there is something familiar in the way he walks and speaks… I wonder if…"

"I am not going to sleep so early," Rishi's defiant voice floated down from his room upstairs. "It's Saturday tomorrow, there is no school. I want to stay awake for some more time."

"That boy is very disobedient. He should be sleeping by this time," grandpa said, shaking his head in disapproval.

"It is time for you to go to sleep too, grandpa," Pia said, laughing.

"But this is a very action-filled part of the story," he protested.

"You can read it first thing tomorrow morning," she reassured.

pia stood up with the empty container and went into the kitchen and washed her hands. When she returned to her grandpa's room, his nose was still in the book. She firmly took the book from his reluctant hands, put a bookmark on the page he had been reading, and kept it on the table. She tucked him comfortably into bed, covered him with a warm blanket and put out the lights.

On the way to her own room, she passed by Rishi's room, from which her mother stepped out. "He's really drowsy, but is reading his comics book and is not willing to go to sleep," her mother said, exasperated. "Anyway, tomorrow you don't need to go to clean Chinten, Pia. Shaurya Singhji insisted that they will keep a maid for all that work. I asked the Sharmas if their maid could go to Chinten too once their work was over, and they've agreed." She bid Pia goodnight and went into her room to retire for the night.

Instead of going to her own room, Pia entered Rishi's and saw him lying on the bed, reading a comics book even though his eyes were drooping with sleep.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?" she asked, walking over to the bed and sitting down by his side.

"Its Saturday tomorrow, I can stay up late," he said stubbornly.

"Ok…then you can lie down on my lap and read," she said; he had always loved to do that.

He thought about it. "Fine...but don't pat my head, I always go right to sleep when you do that,"

"I won't," she assured him, knowing fully well that she wouldn't have to.

Rishi happily laid his head on her lap, and continued to read. But few minutes later, the book had fallen to his side and he was fast asleep. Pia tenderly stroked his head.

Rishi had been hardly 2 years old when her father had passed away. He had grown up without knowing their father, without having the memories that she had…just like Abhay.

But Abhay had lost his mother also before he had turned six…He was an orphan. The first time she had learnt that, she had found it heartbreaking and the more she thought about it, the more it distressed her. How terrible it must have been to grow up without the love and security of parents. The mere idea was frightening. Her father had passed away 7 years ago, and the pain hadn't diminished at all. But she and Rishi still had her mother and grandfather, and so many friends to love and be loved in return. But Abhay had never known the love of a real family at all…

************************************************

Pia washed all the clothes in the icy cold water, put them all in a bucket and climbed up the stairs to the terrace to put them out to dry. She picked up a shawl on the way up and wrapped it around herself, as the sun was just coming up and it would be quite cold outside.

She had walked onto the middle of the terrace, when she realized there was someone on the neighbouring terrace.

Abhay was standing facing the rising sun, eyes closed, immersed in prayer. There was a small brass vessel, the kind her grandpa used for poojas, on the railing of the terrace in front of him. He had evidently just finished with a Surya Namaskar.

That night too, when she had seen him outside the temple, he had been praying, Pia mused. She had startled him when she had suddenly opened the door…

When he opened his eyes, she realized with a jolt that she had unconsciously been looking at him for some moments…..what if he had turned and seen her watching him…

Feeling very flustered, she hurriedly picked up a sari from the bucket and started to hang it on one of the many clothes-lines. When she peeked around the side of it, he had picked up the small brass vessel and was making his way towards the door.

"Good morning" she called out cheerfully.

He halted and located the source of the greeting.

"Do you do the Surya Namaskar everyday?" she queried, "Grandpa says that's a very good practice and it helps ensure good health, a long life and…"

"I'm glad you approve," he interrupted, "Could you ask your grandfather if he also knows of any method to keep away annoying neighbours."

"No, he doesn't," she shook her head regretfully. "But he always says the name of a house should reflect the nature of those who live in it," she grinned, "so I've told him we should change Chintan's name to 'Lanka'".

His face turned red at her insinuation and he stepped forward angrily on the other terrace, saying, "You…"

"Pia…have you finished hanging the clothes…" Her mother walked in from the door, interrupting whatever threat Abhay was about to give her.

"Oh hello, son," she beamed at Abhay, and then she noticed the brass vessel in his hand, "Were you doing the Surya Namaskar? That is very good for health, you know," she said approvingly.

Pia stifled her laughter as Abhay shifted uncomfortably. "I…err…yes, I'll….I'll go now," he muttered and turned to leave.

"I'll help you put the clothes," her mother told her, "then we can finish fast and make something special for breakfast." Pia smiled and nodded and picked up a sheer net dupatta from the bucket. Her mother picked up few garments and moved towards another clothes-line. Abhay reached the door of the terrace just as she flung the garment over the line and through the transparent white dupatta she saw him reach for the door and open it. She was straightening the garment on the line, when he unexpectedly turned around.

And suddenly, she found his eyes piercing into her own through the netted cloth...And then he was gone, shutting the door behind him with force.

**********************************************

The truck with the belongings of the new tenants had come today morning instead of yesterday. A whole crowd of curious onlookers had gathered to watch the unloading of the furniture, which looked quite elegant and expensive. There were also many crates, which presumably held kitchen utensils and other household appliances. It was only after everything had been shifted into the house that the gathering outside the house dispersed. The workers were now inside the house, moving the heavy furniture.

Pia's grandfather and her mother had offered to help with the shifting, but Shaurya Singh had assured them that they could manage on their own. But her mother insisted that they send breakfast for them at least, and so it was that at around 9:30 in the morning Pia carried a plate of hot parathas and curd to Chinten.

The door was wide open as the workers were still inside. But Pia had not forgotten her experience when she had entered without permission just a couple of days ago, and so she knocked the door and remained standing outside.

When there was no response, she gingerly stepped onto the first step, and then the second, and peeked inside the room. There was no one inside.

"What do you want?"

Startled, Pia swung around and saw Abhay was coming in from the gate; he had apparently stepped out to talk to the truck driver. He walked past her into the house and then turned around, blocking her way.

"I've brought breakfast. Can I come inside?" she asked brightly, knowing his answer well in advance.

"No. Give me the tray and leave." he answered shortly.

Pia sighed…this was not going to be easy…

She swiftly moved to the side unguarded by him and entered the house, ignoring his annoyed, "Hey!!".

She went straight into the kitchen and kept the food items, and then saw many crates lying unopened on the floor. It would take some time and effort to arrange all of its contents in the kitchen…and she would help as much as she could.

When she came out Abhay was standing near the door, arms crossed. "You've done what you came for, now get out…" he said impatiently.

But Pia was looking at the changed living room with interest. It seemed so much fuller now, with more chairs, a big dining table and other assorted furnishings. A book case was lying in the centre of the room; apparently its place had not been decided as yet.

There was quite a bit of dust on the newly arrived furniture. Pia saw a cleaning rag on a small side table; she picked it up and started to wipe the dining table

"What do you think you are doing?"

"Dusting. You can help too if you want," she said with good cheer.

"The dust can stay. The only thing I don't want in my house is you. Now get out."

"No," she said steadfastly. "I'll leave only after you both have eaten and after setting up the kitchen."

He was about to retort angrily when Shaurya Singh came into the room, with a buzzing mobile phone in hand.

"Hello Pia" he greeted her warmly. Then he turned to Abhay and said, "It's the professor."

Abhay took the ringing phone. "When this call is over, I don't want to see or hear you anywhere in this house."

"Then you should talk to your professor for a very long time," she answered staunchly. This earned her another very nasty look before he left the room to go upstairs to receive the professor's call.

When Pia turned to talk to Shaurya Singh again, she found him looking at her with a curious expression.

Naturally, he must not have not liked her answering Abhay like that.

"I am really sorry, uncle. I was rude, wasn't I," she said, looking down. "But if you let me explain…" she pleaded.

"Rude?" Shaurya Singh asked, surprised. "If anyone was bad-mannered, it was my nephew. I am only astonished that you didn't take his words to heart."

Feeling relieved, on the spur of the moment, Pia decided to confide in uncle. He had always been so friendly and kind towards her, maybe he would even agree to help her in her undertaking. She needed every bit of assistance she could get if she was to strike friendship with Abhay in this century, she thought wryly.

"I need your help, uncle," she said hesitantly, unsure of how he would react, "Dobriyal aunty had sent me a letter, asking me to become friends with Abhay…and also to…to convince him to look at my family as his own…I promised her I'll do it. Will you help me, uncle," she implored, "I don't know if I'll be able to do it otherwise."

"You are just the way the Dobriyal described, Pia, and now I know why they love you so much…And if you manage to do what your aunty wanted, along with her, I too will forever remain indebted to you…"

And then he placed his hand on her head, almost as if in blessing.
