Abhiya Separation OS: Goodbye
Abhay stood at the desolated cliff looking outwardly at the setting sun. Her flowery fragrance reached him before she even came into view. Surprise flickered across his face. Even he had not known that this little venture into the woods would end here. How did she manage to find him always?
He turned slightly. He recognized her silhouette even in the semi-darkness. As her footsteps approached, he turned his back on her. Piya stopped at a little distance from him.
"Leave Piya," said Abhay. "Is it that hard for you to accept that I no longer care for you? You were just a passing affair. How many times will I have to say this to you before it reaches your pea-sized brain?"
"Just this one last time Abhay. I promise," said Piya.
Abhay's body stiffened upon hearing those few words spoken by whom he loved most. He noticed something different in the way she spoke. This moment had come too soon. Sadly, their story had never much time to begin with. It consisted only of a few moments. Moments that he could never forget and would carry till existence's end. The same moments he had forcibly taken away from Piya to allow her to lead a normal life full of light and happiness. He was a man of the shadows and there he would have to return one day. He could not want that for Piya.
He turned to face her. He looked searchingly at her face but she did not give away anything. She seemed to have picked up on this talent of his. He stared into her eyes but no answer. She broke the silence and voiced what he had feared would one day come to pass.
"I am leaving Abhay." "I am going back to Paris."
Each held the other's gaze. Words were lost and silence was welcomed. It seemed as if an eternity would come to pass as the two soul mates continued to look at each other.
No longer able to hold the eye lock, Piya walked past Abhay to look out toward the sunset. She smiled sadly inwardly. The sunset held a distinct resemblance to her life now. All light had gone out of her. She knew it. She felt it with each passing day. As the last few rays of sunlight began to disappear into the clouds, Piya felt the emptiness return to her heart that had vanished for a few brief moments upon seeing Abhay.
"I thought I would be able to put together the pieces of my life that I had lost one year ago Abhay. I failed. And now I am finding it difficult to recognize myself. I don't know where I belong. I am surrounded by my own yet all I see are strangers. I feel alone."
"You are probably wondering why I am telling you this Abhay. My heart tells me that you of all people have a right to know. I have no memories of you, of our past, whether it was good or bad, yet my heart seems to only see you, to feel for you. I wish I could explain it but I can't. I know I no longer have a place in your life and I accept that now."
Abhay stared into the darkness ahead. It tore him apart to see his love so heartbroken, so alone. He tried so hard to protect her but he had failed to protect her from himself. But this was the end of the darkness that had come to envelop Piya's entire existence. This was the final chapter of this dark fairy-tale. They would always belong to each other but could never be with each other.
"Bye Abhay." Her hand reached out for his last touch. He lifted his hand slightly and let her hand slip perfectly into his as if it had always belonged there. She slowly released her hand from his grip lingering on his fingertips momentarily.
As Piya's hand slipped away from his hand, there was a certain twinge in his dead heart.
Hadn't he wanted this all along? Then what was this rising desperation inside his heart to stop her. Always he had walked away from her and decided the course of their story. But today she was leaving him, forever.
She rested her eyes on him one last time. A whirlwind of emotions erupted inside Piya upon looking at him but her face was masked well and did not give away to emotion. As Abhay stole one last look of her angelic face, he saw nothing but determination.
Piya walked past Abhay and her footsteps did not give away once to her heart's pleas to stop. Her eyes finally gave way to the tears long held by them. She let them flow freely. She had to do this. For herself. This was insanity. She had to release herself from this relationship that no longer meant anything to Abhay but meant so much to her. Why did it hurt so much to walk away?
As she walked away, Abhay unconsciously raised his hand to stop her but he had to let her go. Oh, the irony of life. One year ago, he had taken Piya's memories and walked away. Now Piya, his very life itself, his reason for existence, was walking away.
Destiny had brought them together. But the world had rules that needed to be followed to preserve balance. Abhay and Piya could not be one. Their separation was a return to keep that balance.
"I am sorry Piya." "Forgive me."
His words were lost to silence. She was gone. His existence was empty of her presence. Finally, his world had fallen silent.
