"Mom, I missed you!" Aarti whispered into the phone as she hopped onto the bed. She did not realize how much she missed her "home" until she saw "Home" flashing on her mobile phone when she stepped into the bedroom.
"How are you Aarti? Has my daughter been a good wife? I hope you have not gotten into trouble at your in-laws place," her mother's voice greeted her.
"Ma, I..I...I miss you and Papa..."She could barely choke out the words as she was holding back tears. She truly missed her parents.
"Aarti, do not be a baby. You are somebody's wife now. You know we miss you too," Mrs Dubey tried to soothe her daughter. She had missed her daughter terribly yesterday night. She almost called up Aarti first thing in the morning but she had to accept the fact that her daughter now has a new life and that does not include her.
Aarti saw Yash stepped into their room with a glass of water. She walked out to continue her conversation with her mother knowing that Yash had to work on the budget and would probably find her talking on the phone in the room a disturbance.
After her conversation with her parents ended, Aarti stepped into their room, changed into her pajamas and headed to bed. Normally, she could not fall asleep with the lights on but Yash was still working. One more inconvenience of being married. Fortunately today she was so exhausted that she could almost immediately fall asleep as she laid her head on the pillow.
Yash sat staring at the budget in front of him while his mind replayed Aarti's reply from their conversation. Was she just throwing Aprita's name in his face as she was still angry that he walked away this morning? He was sure Prateek would not be discussing Aprita with Aarti! And whom was she talking to that she had to walk out of the room? Yash told himself to focus on the budget and tomorrow he would sort this Aprita madness with Aarti.
The next day, Aarti woke up to attend the morning prayers and prepared breakfast. Vidhi babhi was cordial to her and they did their chores in harmony. After the rest had breakfast and the male clan left for office, she and Vidhi babhi had breakfast and discussed what to cook for lunch. After preparing lunch, they sat around watching some reruns of the soaps. Aarti even had time to unpack her bags before preparing dinner. She thought of calling Mansi but she knew Mansi would want all the details about her and Yash. And she was too confused what to tell Mansi anyway. This was not how she and Mansi had imagined her married life would be!
The rest of the family, except Yash, came back from work to eat dinner. Yash had to work late as he still needed to rework on the budget. Gayathri ma told her to save some food for Yash and to serve them to him when he came back home from work later. Aarti could not help but wonder if Aprita stayed late too. She debated with herself whether she should ask Prateek about it but decided against it. She does not want to appear like some jealous wife!
When it was already close to midnight and Yash was not home, Aarti decided to lay on the bed to rest. Annoyance started creeping in as she wondered why he did not call her to tell her what time he would be home so that she did not have to wait up for him like a lost puppy.
By the time Yash came back home, everyone was already asleep. Yash was surprised that his mother was not there to greet him. Normally she would be waiting up for him and asking him to wash up while she served him dinner or rather supper. Yash took a shower and although he was famished, he was too tired to make his way to the kitchen. He crept into the bed, beside his sleeping wife and fell asleep immediately.
"I am so hungry as I did not have dinner yesterday, " Yash said as he took a second helping of breakfast served by Vidhi babhi.
"Well, you should not have skipped dinner then. I saw the food we left you was still in kitchen this morning," Vidhi babhi chided him
"I was too tired to go to the kitchen to get food," Yash replied.
"Aarti, I thought I told you to serve Yash dinner when he comes back. What were you doing?" Gayathri ma questioned Aarti. Everyone at the table turned to look at Aarti. Yash saw Aarti's eyes widened and she bit her lower lip.
"Hmm..I fell asleep.." Aarti muttered.
"Mere baghwan ke kasam. I do not know how some people bring up their daughter. She can just go and sleep when her husband is not home yet from work. I do not know.."
" Aarti bahu, you cannot do even a simple task? How are you going to be a good wife to my Yash? You need to take care of his needs and..."
Both Buaji and Gayathri ma reprimanded Aarti at the same time. Aarti felt she was unjustly treated. Why is it her fault that her husband does not even tell her what time he would be home? Was she expected to just stay up and wait for his return? And if he was hungry, could he not get the damn food himself or wake her up if he was incapable of serving himself? And what has this got to do with her upbringing? Although she was tempted to clarify the situation, she knew it was fruitless and they would then scold her for being rude. She just kept quiet and let them blabber on what she needs to do to be a good wife! Damn, they should give Yash some lesson on how to be a good husband too!
Yash could see irritation on Aarti's face. Yash was about to lie that Aarti offered to serve him dinner but he was too tired to eat when Prateek suddenly asked him about the budget.
"The budget is alright. I think we can finalise it today," Yash replied.
"Yes. We will need to finalise the budget today," Pankaj added. He then went on about the deadlines of the Oceanic Project.
For once, Prateek was glad about that the conversation at the breakfast table was about the Oceanic Project! And from the look on Aarti babhi's face, he knows that Yash bhaiyya is in trouble!
