Chapter- 3
"What do you want as your birthday gift?"
After a long pause, she replied " Mummy".
Though he lost his ability to reply for a few seconds, Yash was not surprised. Palak had been making similar demands ever since she realized her mummy was taking a bit too long to come back from the Fairyland. That's what Gayatri had told her. Palak was too attached to Arpita and too little to face the hardest truth of her life. So, the entire family had decided to opt for the easy option- a lie! But sometimes a lie is beneficial and it certainly proved to be so in Palak's case. The day arpita didn't come back, she stayed up all night waiting for her. Next morning , she was taken to a relative's place and Dai maa accompanied her. She had to spend the entire day there while people paid their last respects to arpita's body in the Scindhia Mansion. When Dai maa brought her back home, she was asleep. Dai Maa mentioned later how she had continuously wanted Arpita. The third day was the worst. "Why is mummy not coming home?", she asked with tears in her eyes, only to be replied with an uncomfortable silence. "Tai ji, when will mummy come back?". "soon , darling...very soon. Now have some lunch, or mummy will feel bad", Vidhi replied.
Of course, Yash had heard all this later from Prateek because when Palak was asking questions about her mummy, he was being hospitalized. Severe shock had numbed his brain, lack of food or water had dehydrated his body. After sitting like a stone for two days, he had finally collapsed on the third.
" We have given all medications required to treat his dehydration Scindhia saab. We are giving him food through the drip. Your son will be fine physically. However, its his mental condition I am worried about. He is in severe shock and has every chance to slip into depression. The fact that he has not communicated with anyone since the incident , nor expressed his grief makes the situation all the more complicated . I have already consulted a psychiatrist. He will be visiting Yash, once he wakes up. Right now he is sleeping under the effects of the injection. ".
Suraj Pratap Scindhia merely nodded to the doctor. He had lost his favourite daughter in law, his son was in the hospital, and their two children were at home, dumbfounded , scared, and wondering what suddenly had went so wrong!
Nothing changed much over the next few months except Yash had started reacting to people around him, albeit superficially. He would eat and lay down to sleep when forced to, he would respond when asked something, but all the time, his mind would be somewhere else. However, he and the family had had to cross several hurdles before reaching this stage. 2 failed suicide attempts, regular sessions with the psychiatrist, fits of self destruction ...they had endured a lot! Now when he thought about those days, he was filled with guilt for his daughters. His grief and his sin had not even allowed him to consider the fact that his daughters would become orphans when he took those sleeping pills. That was 3 days after he returned from the hospital...just 6 days after Arpita died. After being unsuccessful with that, he had slashed his wrist...God knew how he managed to do that inspite of being guarded day in and out by his family! But that was of no use either. He merely lost some blood! It was even worse after that. They literally treated him like a jailed convict! Every family member took turns to keep watch on him. They were more cautious this time than the first. All medicines, sharp weapons, anything remotely harmful was removed from his vicinity.
And then started the counseling sessions. He refused to cooperate at all initially, even misbehaving on several occasions. However, Dr. Agarwal was very patient and kind. After a month, Yash started talking to him. Finally, the doctor managed to convince Yash of one thing- he couldn't die. There was no escape. He was a father, not only a husband, and death meant depriving his daughters of both parents. If he did not want to augment his guilt, he would have to live. One thing he could not convince him of- his innocence! Yash would not believe it. Nevertheless, he infused a motivation for life within Yash. He told him that though it was impossible to change what happened, atonement , even if partial was in his hands, and he would have to remain alive for that.
Yash still had a vivid memory of the doctor's words. " Don't u feel anything else other than pain and guilt? Aren't you angry? Not just with yourself...but because of what actually happened? "
And realization dawned upon him. The fury within him was not just towards himself, only the shock of losing Arpita forever had been so enormous that he had lost all capability to think. As a result, the emotion which should have gripped him the moment he realized how she died, was overshadowed by the fact that he ,himself had led her to it.
The years after that were spent in what seemed to be a never ending quest for the truth. It had taken him 3 years to reach his goal. It did provide some temporary solace. By then it was clear, that he would have to spend the time that God had allotted for him in the world in a similar fashion. Peace was not meant for him, and rightfully so.
Meanwhile Palak and Payal were growing up. Payal had been just a year old when Arpita died. She was 4 now, and Palak was about to turn 7. Long back Palak had been told that fairies had taken her mummy to the Fairyland . Gayatri explained to her how God had been pleased with her mummy because she was a pure soul, and so had given her the chance to visit the place which no human being could dream of going to. She also told her that her mummy was very happy there. Payal also grew up hearing the same story, and readily believed it.
However, of late, Palak had begun to ask questions. "How long is she going to stay there? Doesn't she miss us? Me, Payal, Papa and all of us? Has she forgotten us? Is she never coming back? " Palak was an intelligent child, probably ahead of others of her age. She could now read more into the silences that greeted her questions.
"Papa...I want mummy for my birthday" Yash was pulled out of his reverie.
"Palak, u know mummy is with the fairies. She can't come back...yet...", he replied, avoiding her eyes.
"Is mummy coming back Papa, ever? "
A simple "Yes" should have been the answer. But, somehow he couldn't bring himself to lie yet again to her. He was confident that she would see through his lie, if he did. Probably he should have remained quiet . Instead he said "No"...just like that...and just that!
The shrill alarm bell took him by surprise. The faint glow of the morning sun was peeping into the room and it brightened Payal's face, as she slept in his arms. Payal had made the same demand last night...just like Palak did one year before. He had left India and settled in London a week after Palak's 7th birthday. A year had passed...and today he found himself facing the same scenario again!
