Hi - this story is becoming more irreverent than I had intended. But - I intend to have fun with this and hope you enjoy it too.
Thanks for reading.
Part-3 "So, tell me about this Vikram", said Yash to Ansh as father-son did their push-ups the next morning. From the corner of his eye, Yash was amused to see Ansh stumble at the sudden question and nearly fall.
"Uh...who Vikram?", asked Ansh, trying to parry for time. He and Palak hadn't been able to catch up yet, so he didn't know how she had fared.
"You know who Vikram, Mr. Smart Aleck. And your mother has already spoken with Palak and we know, so you can spill the beans." Yash knew all of Ansh's stalling tactics – after all, he had used them himself.
"We are in the same Physics class" said Ansh, trying to feel his way despite his father's assurance that they 'knew all'.
"And?..." Yash's patience was wearing thin. It was hard enough that his baby was growing up, had boys chasing her and now his son wasn't opening up.
When Ansh didn't say anything else, Yash sat back and stretched out for his water. Taking a swig, he said "listen Ansh. This is not about you and Palak and your loyalty to each other. This is about Palak – and a boy. I am going to find out about him – and you can either help me or stand by while I get the information I want. Your choice."
Ansh sighed. To be honest, he was glad to have this chance to talk with his father. While he would never have broached the subject himself, he really wanted to discuss it.
"Vikram is a nice enough guy. We are also on the same football team and he is a good player, a real sportsman." Ansh knew his father would understand what he meant.
"So, if you know him so well and like him, why haven't you mentioned him before? How come we have never met him?" Yash as usual got straight to the point.
"Well….you see Papa, since the beginning of this year, actually from our 1st physics class together this year, Vikram has been hitting on Palak. Or rather, he has been trying to get close to her. So I sort of…you know…kept a distance….made sure he couldn't get too close. Palak didn't seem very interested either, so I would stick around whenever he tried to talk to her…."
"Hmm….so what changed suddenly? How come they went on a date yesterday?" Yash asked.
"For our last project we were assigned partners and Vikram and Palak were one team. You remember her project Papa? They did really well and came first. And when Vikram asked her out yesterday, for the first time Palak agreed. When I started to go along, she …she asked me to go home instead" Ansh said a little forlornly. It had hurt that his sister had preferred to go alone with Vikram.
Like father, like son, thought Yash ruefully. Putting his arms around Ansh, he said "she is growing up. Your Mamma says this is natural at this age. But you know what, next time, if there is even a next time, you go with them. One of the ground rules for this dating thing is that Palak does not get to meet him or any one else without a group of friends. At the very least, I want you there – ok?"
Ansh nodded.
"And next week, invite some of your friends over and call Vikram too. We will check him out" Yash informed his son.
"The Scindia Inquisition?" asked Ansh gleefully. For the first time, he was looking forward to one of his friends going through the inquisition. All of them had to – and it embarrassed both Palak and Ansh no end. But this – this was going to be an exception! "Can I join?" he asked hopefully.
Yash looked at him with raised eyebrows. "Have you ever been allowed to join? No – it wouldn't be fair. We adults will be enough for Vikram I suspect".
"They are doing what?" gasped Palak.
"Well, what did you expect when Mamma told you she and Papa want to meet Vikram?" replied Ansh. "You know the drill."
Palak sighed, "I just hadn't thought it through I guess. I won't be able to face Vikram after the 'inquisition'".
That got Ansh's hackles up. "Why?" he demanded. "All our friends have gone through this – and you didn't have a problem facing any of them after it. So why Vikram? And if he chickens out, he is not a worthy friend" Ansh said loftily, repeating the dialogue his Papa and Chachu had always reiterated when they complained about the inquisition.
Palak rolled her eyes. Easy for Ansh to say – wait till he got a girlfriend and she had to go through the 'inquisition'!

Pooja came running into the room calling out to Yash, "Papaaa…."
"Poojaaa…." Yash replied in the exact same tone as he caught the 10 year old up in his arms and swung her around.
"Papa, can I be at the party today? Please, please pretty please, with ice-cream on top", pleaded Pooja.
"What party? We don't have a party today", replied Yash putting her down.
"Yes we do. Mamma and Taiji are busy preparing so many lovely things – there's cake and fudge and burgers and pizza and ….". Yash had to interrupt the breathless list of goodies "Pooja, you are a 'petu'".
"Papa!" she pouted, adding quickly, "I just love good food – like my Papa".
Yash couldn't stop a grin, but he was going to disappoint her. "Well, its not really a party you know. Just some of your Di and Bhaiyya's friends coming over. Do you really want to be part of that?" he asked, knowing her answer. When Ansh and Palak had first started getting their friends over, the toddler Pooja had insisted on joining – and hated every minute of the noisy exuberant crowd who completely ignored her unless they fell over her. Now, you couldn't pay her to join one of the elder kids' gatherings!
"Mmpff" Pooja sniffed, pretending she didn't care. "I am still going to have the biggest piece of the cake."
"You mean a piece from the tiny pastry you made out of the cake" said Payal as she walked into the room. "Hi Papa", she said giving him a kiss.
"Hello my darling, and what pastry are you talking about", asked a curious Yash.
"Oh, Pooja already took her biggest piece of cake – more than half of it" Payal giggled.
"I did not!!" exclaimed an indignant Pooja.
As Yash joined Payals' laughter, Pooja amended, "perhaps I did take a small piece."
"Small??" exclaimed Payal. "I found the rest of the cake in the dustbin – the huge piece you could not eat. Just wait till Mamma finds out."
"You wouldn't!" Pooja said anxiously, "please Pali, please, please pretty please with ice-cream on top."
Yash hugged Payal close as they collapsed laughing looking at Pooja's frantic face. "Silly goose" said Payal, wiping her tears, "Mamma already knows and she baked another cake."
As Pooja sighed in relief, Yash rounded on her in mock fury "But you young lady, deserve a punishment for this. Hmmm…Payal, what do you suggest?"
Payal grinned – "let's have her skip her tennis lessons and go for an extra music lesson."
"Nooo" screamed Pooja running out of the room.
