Dwelling on the Details: Hide and Seek
{Episode 106}
July 16, 2012: "Yeh mausam ka jadoo hai, mitwa...Na ab dil pe kaabu hai, mitwa..."
The episode has many, many points worthy of discussion, but the increasing comfort between Yash and Aarti shone so brightly today in the most unexpected of moments that it would be a crime to not write about their scenes today!
All-encompassing statement: Today Gurmeet and Kratika wove magic in front of the camera like never before...
The initial silences between Yash and Aarti spoke louder than words because of these two actors who could bring out their characters' unspoken words through their expressions. The impact of the combination of spoken words and powerful silences can already be felt due to the scenes in today's episode...But this is only a preview!
At the Water's Edge
- They walk to the water's edge together and gently lower the diya onto the calm surface of the pond...The first thing I noticed about this moment was the way Yash's posture mirrors Aarti's. They sit facing each other, Aarti's left hand resting next to Yash's right hand...Like complements...Like two parts of a whole that is closer to being complete but not quite there yet. That's how Gurmeet and Kratika are when they're in front of the camera together as Yash and Aarti, too, I feel. Ever since "before the beginning of PV," so to speak, there was something about their reactions that was natural. With such a dedicated team behind the camera, the complementarity of the actors and characters is enhanced even further.
- Yash speaks to Aarti freely of his own volition, expressing his own previous doubts about the situation that she, with her quick thinking, was able to handle and guide to the finish line with amazing results...
- Aarti's steady gaze caught my attention all throughout this scene because that was the first thing that I had noticed and loved immensely about Kratika when I saw Promo 3...To see that steady, unflinching gaze return (or manifest itself for the first time, I guess, in the context of this story) made me so happy. I love how the camera focuses on Kratika's face for a long time during every close-up, catching every subtle change in Aarti's thoughts, which are reflected in her eyes. Beautiful, just beautiful!
- "Aapne toh...kamaal kar diya..." - Yash's visible admiration and another compliment...two things that previously sent Aarti soaring up to the clouds even though she never really knew how to respond to such appreciation in a verbal manner. Today, she simply gazes at him, reading every feature of his face, and a response comes to her lips...
- "Aaj kal mujhpar kisi ka...jadoo chadha hua hai, Yashji..." - Bear with me as I list out a few things I loved about Kratika's delivery of this line! 1) She is the picture of composure and peace - once again, that steady gaze! 2) Aarti's voice - that husky intensity was entirely unexpected, but what an impact - immediately thought of that one flashback where Aarti was being fatally seductive; I was reminded of that scene because I felt that her voice dropped a little bit here; 3) The deliberate look into Yash's eyes - it's evident that she is focused only on the man in front of her...
- "Jadoo...Kiska?" - Aah, adorable in all his cluelessness is Aarti's Yashji! Gurmeet's quizzical expression and little shake of the head to convey Yash's confusion - Aww! (Gurmeet was the one who got "Aww!" reactions from me while Kratika took all the "Oh my God..." reactions of escalating intensity)
- The gentle smile gracing Aarti's face lingers for a second, until she realizes what she just said and the complications of her telling the truth to him. The smile fades, and she looks away for a beat, only to think up a quick answer...It amazes me every single time there's a scene like this, where Aarti thinks about something or realizes something, that it is clearly visible that the wheels in her head are turning. No over-the-top, confused looks in an attempt to make it seem like the character is in thought - Kratika's eyes change every time, and that's all that's needed.
- "Mausam ka...jadoo chadh gaya hai" "Kya? Mausam ka...?" - Haha, loved Yash's moment of disorientedness as her words sink in. He is silent for a beat as her words register, then..."Kya?" He was expecting a "someone," not a "something," but this is Aarti, he remembers...A bundle of never-ending surprises. She nods with her eyes, with all the innocence and composure of a mischevious angel, and he responds in kind with a soft, amused smile that continues to play on his lips as he repeatedly glances at her while stepping away to answer his phone. I found it so adorable that he actually walks a few steps backwards while still facing and watching Aarti before he turns and walks off properly! I'm sure he was going to humor her and continue with the repartee if the phone hadn't interrupted! (I seriously wondered for a second if he was thinking that Aarti made a Hum Aapke Hain Koun reference on purpose, because that was one of the first things that came to my mind, personally! Regardless, that smile of his was really cute since we don't see Yash smile enough!) A smile bursts onto her face as he walks off. The silliness of her answers in their first moment of playful banter has brought about an even more pronounced change in the air...
- This little scene, complete with the classic phone interruption, was so soothing on the eyes (and ears!) because of its normalcy and the easy flow of banter between the two. A few moments alone at the water's edge, speaking of the season's magic - there are undercurrents of something more profound that has only just begun...Gurmeet and Kratika were absolutely brilliant! Aarti's confident, mildly flirtatious intensity and subsequent mischevious innocence and Yash's gentle amusement - loved watching every second!
Hide-and-Seek
- Kratika was excellent in this part of the scene - she was brilliant in the entire thing, of course, but the transitions in Aarti's demeanor as she watched Yash from behind the pillar were superb.
- Aarti walks to the pillar in all seriousness, which intrigued me...A smile creeps up on her face as she steps closer to the pillar, perhaps because she has chanced upon the idea of silently watching Yash without being intrusive...She watches him until he turns and catches her looking at him. One thought crossed my mind at this point: Aarti didn't spin around and hide behind the pillar with a shocked expression on her face! Quite the opposite: calmly, slowly, she turns, smiling lightly to herself. The second time, she looks at him almost indulgently, but the transition to a more wistful expression took me by surprise and I wondered why she would look at him that way...until I realized just now (literally just now!) that Kratika's expressions match up with the emotions in the lyrics of Yeh Dil Hai, as if those words are playing in Aarti's mind. Her smile fades just as the line, "sab iss dil ki hi toh mushkil hai..." begins, and at the end, after she meets Yash's eyes and moves back again, her little smile almost appears to be a smile of gentle amusement or possibly even mockery at herself mixed with admiration for Yash...She can't fight her feelings, after all!
- Yash's reactions to Aarti's little game of hide-and-seek: The first time, it's like he's thinking, "She's watching me? Why?" but then he ultimately disregards her casually...The second time, he senses her watching him, frowns, turns...Most notable nuance here: he doesn't turn back, and his gaze lingers on the place where she backed away from his line of sight...Later, he casually glances over at her hiding place, trying to pass off his search for her as a natural movement (pretty successful, I must say), but when he doesn't see her during those fleeting seconds, he takes a more deliberate second time to wait and see if she would come out from behind the pillar again...He eyes have begun to search for her consciously now...What a long way they've come already!
- "Aarti Yash Scindia" - This says it all, doesn't it? On the day that she declared proudly that Ansh's full name was Ansh Yash Scindia, she didn't see herself as Aarti Yash Scindia...She has crossed a river of fire to get to this point, but even though she has braved one storm, she knows there are many more to face...She won't back away. She will bring her husband happiness and sunshine again, not only because her happiness is linked to his, but more so because a man as kind as he is does not deserve to stay shrouded in darkness forever.
Asides:
- Didn't have time to talk about the fleeting interactions at the beginning of the episode or the scene with Gayatri, but I loved those moments, too!
- Background music people! I love you, whoever you are! And not just for this episode, mind you! I love the entire background score for this show! Edit: It seems unfair to single out the music people now, because honestly, everything from the music to the editing to the dialogues to the direction to the camerawork is worth tons of praise! Love you all, PV team!
A Sudden Thought...
- About my little song tagline for the episode...In a way, if Aarti had been in a position to honestly tell Yash that he is the one whose magic has left her spellbound and mesmerized, it would be somewhat like a situation in which her response would partially start to answer the difficult question of "hum aapke hain kaun?" (My brain is in need of rest now, so sorry if that last point is all confusing!)
As always, thank you for reading!

Here is my response to you from the DC:

These two are just growing beyond compare, aren't they? That diya scene was permeated with magic of the most potent variety, and they seemed to manifest the magic they were talking about in their every dialogue. I loved Kratika's expression when Yash was talking to her...she sort of went into a trance, where she lost all her inhibitions (which actually echoes the whole sufi strain in the story) and just went for it. And when she made that half hearted cover up, the look of fond amusement on his face..his eyes betraying his being on the brink of laughing out loud!

And here is my response to this post:

Borna, thank you for putting into words the beauty of every nuance of the scenes involving the new Aarti, coaxing the reluctant Yash out of his dark hiding place. I just love the profound interaction of give and take that makes its presence known as a silent undercurrent to the light banter they share. To go back to our elemental symbolism, the active flame of the shraadh which Aarti protected, and the burning heat of the coals upon which Aarti walked to find herself worthy of Yash, have calmed into the peaceful flame of the diya, which they set to rest, together, upon still waters.

If we interpret the fire to be the one within Yash, the one that causes his frequent fevers, then Aarti first protected the flame, then accepted the pain it could cause her before she was able calm it down and give peace to its countenance. Her behaviour, after placing the diya in the water suggests one who has gone through severe penance and seen the light at the end. The way she spoke to Yash, her husky, lowered voice that you mentioned all showed her moment of complete clarity and unwavering focus on the object of her penance, external realities and forces be damned. And in that moment she weaves Yash into her delicate trance, Yash himself being none the wiser, until he is snapped out of it by her cryptic response, of "mausam." It goes to show how much control Aarti exercises over Yash because she draws him into her web of magic, and she snaps him out of it.

On Yash's side, we can see the birth of a new life force, where the raging fire has calmed into a small steady flame, giving out more light than heat, so instead of constantly suffering the loss of Arpita, Yash is able to see Aarti for the first time. He is unable to control his childlike excitement at the success of their plan, and impulsively praises Aarti's special brand of magic, without inhibitions. I love that this praise is what awakens Aarti's consciousness of her magic, which she then proceeds to colour the moment with, driving Yash to genuine amusement and almost laughter. Slowly but surely she is drawing out the mischief buried deep inside his being, by behaving in this impish manner. These two have the innocence of children with the intensity of lovers. It is so entrancing even for us to watch!

I loved your description of the pillar scene and I think you have said it all. Aarti's calm, the magic she wove once again that drew Yash in, even when her face was no longer visible. But I think my favourite thing is Aarti's new consciousness of this magic she possesses and her promise to use it to bring love and happiness back to his life. Finally we have an Aarti who knows her power and is confident in casting her healing spell.

@Loveforlife: Thank you so much for reading! And I am completely in the same boat as far as admiration for the entire team of PV is concerned!
@Sammy: Aah! What a beautiful interpretation and analysis! The elemental symbolism is only getting stronger with every episode, and I have to genuinely thank you for mentioning that here - bringing that insight to light, as it were! The theme of Aarti's magic...Honestly, the thought didn't even cross my mind! Wow. I will have to come back later to respond properly to everything you've written! In less abstract terms (and I apologize if this had already been discussed in the DC), what aspects of Aarti's personality are a part of her magic?

that was a very picturesque description that anyone who hasn't watched it can conjure the scene in their mind 👍🏼
really, really impressive how Gurmeet and Kratika's facial expression lit the whole pond scene. It was just them, no trimmings, decorations or lighting effects (pillar is an exemption), and yet they transported us to that feeling of owning the universe in a moment. We were indulged with just a preliminary of AarYa romance but these two leads are already playing it perfectly.
I also love the scene where Aarti was standing beside MadearG. The picture was more of a mother-daughter relation instead of MIL-DIL 😊😊
Haha!!! Yash getting away from there was like he was afraid to find out something about his feelings 😆 Go ahead, prince charming, love will lead you back sooner than you know it 😆
All agreed, it was a bewitching and captivating episode👏👏👏

@Borna: Aha...what a read!! Superbly mellifluous.👏 You picked each little nuance there and turned it gently into words...Wow!!
You know later when Gayatri tells Aarti.."Take good care of my pagal beta...use dher saara pyar dena...degi na?" At the first mention of "pyar' Yash jerks his head up to look at Aarti...and then at "degi na" he again looks at Aarti but this time as if to say "I understand the unreasonableness of my mother's expectations...she doesn't realize you are still attached to your ex-husband, so how can you fulfill her wish?" And before Gayatri embarrasses him and Aarti more, he moves away...Little does he know that his mother has read his wife correctly. She knows exactly what Aarti feels for him. Notable was Yash's reaction...he was not angry or upset, but mildly embarrassed. Even Gayatri feels at ease to talk about love in front of him, when just a few days back she would have feared his anger. Shows how Aarti's influence is working wonders in removing the family's inhibitions as well.😊

Oh, oh there's more, there's more! 😃

It just keeps occurring to me as I sit here, replaying the scene in my head instead of doing my work. 😛

When Aarti protected the shraadh, she protected the fire so that Yash could purge the negativity and darkness of Arpita's loss from his mind, which later reflected in his body with the fever. Through the night, Aarti cooled the raging fever so that the fire within Yash would not flare up too fast and burn itself out. The next morning, Yash's flame was back to a steady crackle.

When she saved his life on that rainy night, she walked over coals to find Yash and then when she did, lit a fire to warm his body, which had almost accepted death. She took the pain from the fire, leaving its healing warmth for Yash, and rekindled it when it seemed to be puttering out due to long periods spent in the emotional vacuum of Arpita's memories and his grief.

After that the fire still blazed within Yash, but now with purpose and direction, aimed at sustaining rather than self destruction. Finally with the peace of settling Neelam, the fire has calmed into the steady flame of the candle, which will burn silently and consistently for a long time to come. The raging fire which was consuming Yash, has now become a cheery little flame and found its place to glow silently, illuminating what is before him, Aarti.

As for Aarti's brand of magic, it is simple. Aarti is a weaver of dreams and realities. She has the power, through a combination of conviction, imagination and love for happiness to create these filters that beautify reality without denying it. Yash's problem is that he takes things far too literally, and has dealt with his kids in the same manner when it comes to the grief over Arpita. He couldn't give them Arpita so he gave them the next best thing, her pictures, stories about her and basically the presence of her absence constantly. Aarti's magic can make this harsh reality less painful for both the kids and Yash, because she is basically an emotional prism, if that makes sense. Romance and imagination can often help deal with reality and that is just what Yash and Palak need. The same way she protected Ansh from he harsh realities of Gayatri locking him the room, and Yash coming to get them after the kidnapping, she will weave new realities around the two most wounded birds of the Scindia family so they can heal and spread their wings again.

Borna the way u described the entire Diya and hide & seek scene , makes it look even more romantic and playful 😳😳😳...AarYa were indeed at their best in this scene 👏👏...the interaction between both looked so so natural 😳😳...
Loved the way Aarti twisted her words with mausam ka jadoo when we all know its Yash ka jadoo working on her 😆😳...Also I feel Yash does enjoy all the attention that Aarti gives him which evident in the hide and seek scene when she is stealing those glances at him from behind the pillar and he too keeps checking out whether she is looking at him or not 😉 and then third time when she does not peep in from behind the pillar , he turns back to check why she is not peeping in for the third time 😆... Even though Yash does not feel that way for Aarti but somewhere he likes her presense around him 😳...
Best part was Aarti's confession to herself that Aarti Yash Scindia will bring love and happiness back in his life 😳😳😳...This was a new confident and determined Aarti in action yesterday 👍🏼
