India seeks Prithviraj Chauhan's remains
11 December 2001 The Indian government has launched diplomatic efforts to bring back the remains of Prithviraj Chauhan from Afghanistan and correct "distortions" in Afghan history textbooks carried out during the Taliban regime, officials said.
Visiting Afghan interior minister Yunus Qanooni has agreed to these requests and they will be reiterated before Afghanistan's foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah who is coming tomorrow to India.
Prithviraj Chauhan fought two battles with Mohammad Ghori winning the first in 1191 but losing the second in 1192 due to the treachery of Jaichand.
Chauhan was blinded, executed and buried 20 kilometers away from Kandahar.
Due to distortions in history, the Indian government has received reports that local Afghans show disrespect to the monument of Prithviraj Chauhan.
Cutting across party lines, Indian politicians have demanded the return of Chauhan's asthi kalas or remains.
Amar Singh of the Samajwadi Party and former separatist politician Jagjit Singh Chohan made well-publicised visits to Chauhan's birthplace Neemrana in Rajasthan.
Analysts say that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha and the Bharatiya Janata Party are keen for the return of Chauhan's remains before the UP elections slated for February 2002.
They also insist that the Congress party which was hitherto disinterested in the matter since it did not have a constituency in Chauhan's Rajput clan has been clamouring for the return of his remains because of the UP elections.
But the Union government is more perturbed over Taliban-instituted distortions in the history textbooks which, among other things, portray India as the aggressor in its three wars with Pakistan when the opposite is true.
Qanooni has indicated that it would be possible to correct the distortions by setting up a panel of Indian and Afghan historians to vet the textbooks.
The Indian government is also of the view that Prithviraj Chauhan's monument should be relocated to India if it is disrespected in Kandahar.
