Can Prithviraj match up Big B?

"To depict the life of Prithviraj Chauhan was my father, Dr Ramanand Sagar's, dream," says Prem Sagar. After ten years of research, Sagar Arts Productions, which made history with the success of Ramayana and Mahabharata, is ready with its next magnum opus Dharti Ka Veer Yodha-Prithviraj Chauhan which premieres tonight on STAR Plus.

Confident of their subject, Prem Sagar says, "Can writers yarn a tale more heroic, dramatic, intriguing and passionate than the life of Prithviraj Chauhan? Initially it hits you, but soon you start living in those palaces." Take this: A prince trained by the masters in the art of warfare, killed a lion with bare hands at age of 14; fell in love with his enemy's daughter and swept her off from her father's courtroom; resisted Mohammed Ghori's invasions, conquered his enemy but forgave him; but in the end was captured by Ghori who blinded the young king. The story doesn't end there. Since, despite his blindness, Prithviraj Chauhan set out to avenge himself.

From kitchen politics to courtroom intrigues, wasn't slotting a historical saga in the prime time slot (Friday-Sunday at 9 pm) a risky proposition for the channel? "We are excited about this project. Here's a young boy who was a valiant warrior, a dutiful son, a passionate lover and a powerful king...can there be a greater role model for the youth today?" questions Shailja Kejriwal, Senior Creative Director, STAR India and adds on a lighter note, "to take the place of Kaun Banega Crorepati which had an icon like Mr Amitabh Bachchan, we needed a hero no less than Prithviraj Chauhan."

And this is as big as television has ever got. Under the supervision of art designers Omung Kumar, Mukesh Kalola and Pavitra Rajaram, 150 workers burnt midnight lamps for six months to recreate the magic of the 11th century royalty on the sets at Baroda. Even the paintings are authentic Rajasthani artwork from actual palaces. Third generation Sagars, Shakti and Amrit, who are the series' director called for a team of 30 artists from Rajasthan, Ahmedabad and Anand in Gujarat, to hand paint all the walls, ceilings, and the floor!

Stay glued to your television sets to catch the first glimpse of Prithviraj who seems all ready to sweep the TRPs in his favour!

INSET: It wasn't easy for them...

Jas Arora-King Someshwar, Prithviraj's father: "Initially I was apprehensive of playing this role, but when I realised this character is not that of a 60-year-old patriach but of a valiant king who dies young, I was game."

Milind Gunaji, King Vijaypal of Kannauj, Sanyogita's grandfather: "For the role, I had to mentally prepare myself to wear outfits weighing 20 kg in Baroda's heat. On the sets, I was saddled with the most disobedient horse!"

Rajat Tokas, young Prithviraj: "My uncle advised me, 'Rajkumar hamesha sher ki chaal chalta hai (a prince always walks like a lion)'. So I practised the fearless gait in front of the mirror. To get the right look of the character, despite studying in school, I haven't cut my hair for the past seven months now."

Angad Bedi, Prithviraj Chauhan: "For months I have worked on my physique to get a muscular frame that would suit a warrior. My naturally long hair went well with the role. I taking lessons in horse riding, sword fighting along with voice and diction lessons. For inspiration I have also been watching a lot of English warrior films."

Parivah Pranati, Sanyogita, princess of Kannauj: "My clear Hindi diction got me the role. Though the script is exhaustive, I am surfing the net and browsing history books for more details. While shooting for the promos, the horse literally took Angad and me for a ride, so I plan to take riding lessons to get comfortable with the horse!"

Prithviraj Chauhan to hit

Spin legend Bishen Singh Bedi and his wife could barely control their emotion as their son Angad strode majestically into New Delhi's Oberoi hotel on Tuesday. He was dressed for his lead role in the television series on the 12th century Rajput king Prithviraj Chauhan. "Our good wishes are with him and we hope he succeeds as he is putting in a lot of hard work in an unknown field," Bedi told rediff.com. "When I was offered this role a year ago," said Angad, "I discussed it with my family before agreeing to do it. It means a lot of hard work of course, but I am sure I will succeed." The young man initially wanted to play cricket like his dad, but his efforts on that front didn't pay off. Prithviraj Chauhan ascended to the throne when he was just 13. He was fascinated by the beauty of Sanyogita, the daughter of the king of Kannauj, and whisked her away from her swayamwar, an act of derring-do celebrated through the ages.

In the 12th century, when Hindustan came under attack from Arab and Turkish invaders, Prithviraj Chauhan rose to power as the Rajput kings united under him to fight off an invasion by Mohammad Ghori. Commending the efforts of the late Ramanand Sagar?s family -- the people behind the serial -- Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat asked them to consider making serials on other powerful personalities in Indian history like Rana Pratap and Chhattrapati Shivaji.

It will trace the life of the great king from birth to death," Prem Sagar told rediff.com. "The scale of the show is immense as it captures not just the nuances of his love for Sanyogita but the ferocity of his battles with Mohammad Ghori as well. It is being directed by the young duo of Shakti and Amrit Sagar."

A lot of hard work has gone into designing the costumes for each character. Credit for this goes to Nisha Sagar and Neerushaa, both of whom spent months doing research, visiting places associated with Prithviraj Chauhan and reading books on the era.

"We divided our work into two parts," said Nisha Sagar, "I was doing the costumes for the main characters. I spent hours, sometimes days, going into details of each costume. I looked for pearls and precious stones. We have a huge budget for costumes." Angad Bedi takes a moment away from the cast to get a picture taken with his mother, sister and father, Bishen Singh Bedi. In the lower picture, Angad is seen with his grandmother

Although the other stars were also present, it was Angad Bedi who held the attention of the media.

"I am tall and have the additional advantage of a tough body," he said with a smile, as he hugged his grandmother and planted a kiss on her forehead.

From Amitabh to Angad, STAR launches its first historical

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

New Delhi - STAR Plus goes historical this weekend with the extravagant eDharti Ka Veer Yodha - Prithviraj Chauhanf based on the life and times of Delhifs last Hindu ruler.

Produced by Sagar Films that brought the epic eRamayanaf to the small screen, eDharticf, touted to be cable televisionfs first historical, was premiered late Tuesday with Vice President Bharon Singh Shekhawat as guest of honour.

eRamanand Sagarfs eRamayanaf brought cultural revolution in the country and this new series by Sagar family eDharti Ka Veer Yodha - Prithviraj Chauhanf will introduce bravery and courage.

eI would like them to make more such serials,f he said after lighting the lamp at the Oberoi Hotel.

The event began with a sneak peek into the costume drama, offering a blend of culture and history followed by an introduction of the cast by Rajasthani folk musicians.

After the introduction, all the eight main leads walked down the ramp dressed in elaborately designed costumes reminiscent of the bygone era.

eWe wanted a realistic ambience that suited the mood, so I took the help of Ila Arun who is acquainted with the Rajasthani culture. She brought these folk singers and dancers in,f said Mumbai-based designer Achala Sachdev, who conceptualised the entire event.

eIt is all done by me. I worked on the clothes, the expressions of the artist and I think Angad Bedi (who plays Prithviraj Chauhan) created the right impact of a brave warrior,f said Achala, who has also worked as a choreographer with eJassi Jaissi Koi Nahinf and eKkusumf.

STAR is hoping to hit bullfs eye with this lavishly made historical drama, which replaces the popular game show eKaun Banega Crorepati 2Å’ hosted by Amitabh Bachchan on the Friday, Saturday, Sunday prime time slot.

If Amitabh was the USP of eKBCf, the success of ePrithviraj Chauhanf rests on the shoulders of Angad, former Indian cricketer Bishen Singh Bedifs son, who plays the brave warrior king.

eIt was already planned that once the KBC will go off air we will launch this serial. But due to Mr. Bachchanfs illness we had to take it off air before the schedule. This is the first historical serial of its own kind and mainly designed for the family,f said Shailja Kejriwal, senior creative director, STAR India Pvt Ltd.

The serial also stars Milind Gunaji, Jas Arora, Rajni Chandra, Sunila Karambekar, Sanjay Singh, Vishnu Sharma, Ahmed Khan and Parivah.

If the sets at Sagar Sun City, Baroda are anything to go by, the latest venture of Sagar Arts Productions' Prithviraj Chauhan-Dharti Ka Veer Yodha will indeed be an impressive one.

The production house has apparently spent Rs 4 and a half crore for only the palace set. The other sets include a man-made dessert and a lake. The series will trace the life and times of the last king of Delhi, Prithviraj Chauhan. The show which was in the pipeline for several years will finally air next month on Star Plus.

"This was Dr Ramanand Sagar's (of Ramayana fame) dream. We wanted to launch the project on an international scale in the 90s. But it got shelved. We are glad that we are finally making this historical epic," says producer Prem Sagar. Of the legendary ruler Prithviraj, Prem says, "He was the greatest bhoomiputra (son of the soil) in India. We need to tell our kids about this hero."

Prem reveals that Oomang Kumar who had done the sets for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black has been roped in for Prithviraj. "It took him 200 people and two months to create original paintings for the palace," he adds.

Apart from Jas Arora who will play Someshwar (Prithviraj Chauhan's father); the other actors include Milind Gunaji and Nirmal Pandey. "To play the lead character we decided to cast Angad Bedi, son of former cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi. We are training him in acting and voice modulation. Angad's body structure and subtle chemistry is brilliant," reveals Prem.

When contacted, Angad admits that he is playing the role of Prithviraj. "I have signed an exclusive contract with Sagar Arts and am excited about the project," he says. Angad, who has been representing Delhi in cricket for the last eight years says, "I have walked the ramp for friends and have also got some film offers. But I wanted to work in a project which revolves around me. I thrive on that challenge," he adds.

The actor who has also worked in Seema Biswas' film Kaya Taran, adds, "I have weighed all the pros and cons. Prithviraj will be a stylized show. I know that Ajay Devgan and Sunny Deol will be playing Prithviraj Chauhan in two historical films which will be releasing in June. My character will also make an entry around that time. I am new and I want people to notice me," he says.

plays Prithvi Prithvi in childhood even born after 10 years long prayers and all, he allows none of the parents to pamper him. He is gem of a kid. He is most naughty and sharp among the princess. Often Kamlavti feels tired of his naughtiness. But along all the naughtiness, every now and then he surprisingly thinks deeply on bigger issues whom a king should think. He loves his parents, Jaichand, Nayantra, Anangpal and all and gets the same from everybody. In short he is BALKRISHNA in his childhood and as he grows up, he reflects all the variations of Lord Krishna; the Murlidhar, the Chhaliya, the Chakradhar etc.

He has a friend Chander and the equation with him is almost of Krishna and Sudama. At the young age he defeats many of the kings and intruders but always keeps a space for "kshama". It shows he never fights in anguish but he just serves a kings duty, which is the main character of Lord Krishna as we know.

Angad Bedi is Prithvi

Angad Bedi is the chosen one to play Prithvi, the main lead in Sagar Arts' new period drama titled Legend of Prithvi for Star Plus.

Angad Bedi: Bhumiputra,Prithvi

The cricketer turned model turned actor is trained in acting, body language and voice modulation.

Angad, son of ex spinner, Bishen Singh Bedi was last seen showcasing his culinary skills in Star One's Cook Na Kaho. He has also flirted with Bollywood in the film Kaya Taran based on the Sikh riots.

" I play an Indian warrior. The show is based on Prithvi Raj Chauhan's life and the wars he had waged. Prithvi is a very challenging role, it has a Braveheart and Kingdoms of Heaven kind of look. This is probably the biggest show that Star Plus has ever done. I have a very stylised, different and contemporary look. I auditoned for the show like many others before going to England for a cricket match and got selected in the look test," says Angad who shifted base to Mumbai two years back. Angad plans to act in commercial cinema post Legend of Prithvi.

Angad started shooting for the show a month earlier in Baroda. Besides that he's also starting a cricket school with his father in Delhi and has got two English film offers in his kitty.

"We spent four months looking for the perfect guy who could play Prithvi. After all Prithvi is the greatest bhumiputra born ever in India. Somewhere we feel Angad has been the correct choice to play the part as he has the perfect body structure and emotions of Prithvi," says producer, Prem Sagar.

Angad in Star One's Cook Na Kaho

He adds, " Prithvi is a spectacular show with royal palaces, throwns, action, valour, love story and emotions thrown in. It has been Dr Ramanand Sagar's dream project and we have been working on it since 1996. We have shot it in our 40 acre Sagar film city in Baroda where a huge palace has been set up costing a crore and a half."

Legend of Prithvi
has an interesting star cast which includes Jas Arora (Prithvi's father), Nirmal Pandey (plays Mohamad Ghori), Karpuri Devi (plays Prithvi's mother) Vishnu Kapoor, Bengamin Gilani, Khush Sharma.
