No offense to anyone but it's quite simple.

When a girl gets married, her before marriage home, after marriage may always be her home and all, but it doesn't mean the rules will bend for her.

Hetal knows how everyone feels about onion and etc, yet she still cooked it in the kichen for her husband. If she was so adament to cook it, she should've elsewhere. She should know better than that. Period.

Some people believe nothing is wrong, others believe it is wrong. The simple fact is it doesn't matter if we think it's wrong or right. The truth is crystal clear: The Gandhi's do NOT cook with onions and ginger and etc, and Hetal growing up in that house should RESPECT that and the sentiments of her family members. Just because she suddenly decided to want to cook, doesn't make it OKAY and acceptable for her to do so... So she is wrong in that sense.

And, I don't understand why anyone is comparing her to Mona. Mona is the DIL of the House, and each DIL is expected to adjust to her household changes, there is no such thing as double standards here. There is no comparison to how Hetal is treated by the Gandhi's compared to Mona because one is the daughter and the other is the Daughter in Law. I hope that is clear . Mona has never cooked with onions and all and etc. And If Hetal so wants to, she should do it at her own house, not here where she clearly knows how everyone will feel about it. All in all, Hetal's act of nature was selfish and wrong.

And is it wrong to cook with onions and garlic and etc? NO. But it varies from person to person, each person has their own belief and that is why what Hetal did was wrong knowing how the Gandhi's feel about such things.

And, it doesn't matter about backward or forward. That isn't even the issue here. The issue is just about respecting a simple belief. Not all people share the same belief, but even that isn't the issue here. It's just about Hetal cooking with onions to people who have lived their entire life believing it is wrong.

EDIT: As for why some people do not eat onion and garlic, it is all spirituality. It is firmly believed that our stomach and digestive system is part of pitta (fiery energy). And food like black daal, garlic, onions, etc increase that fire and raise the activity within body. But, we want our mind to be still and not run so we don't want the fiery energy so we can gain control over our mind. Hence, even during fasts, such foods are to be avoided by Hindus. Again, this is strictly for those who believe. And all belief should be respected.

I agree with taral totally .

Some Vaishnavs Or Jains etc MAY be eating etc , Thats NOT the question here at all . THIS particular family does NOT eat and follows this strictly . Hetal has grown up there . Mona was not given any special treatment , so why is Hetal expecting same ? It has to be understood that elders r very touchy about it and cannot sleep properly at night if they r staunch believers like Baa . Its a religious matter for them , they feel spiritually violated . At that age they cannot change and expecting them all to change under the excuse of progressive thought is being very aggressive and selfish . Hetal need not follow Baa's ways if marraige has broadened her mind and made her more progressive . Go to Chandigarh or Your new house , wherever it is , and do whatever u want there . If Baa comes there , tell her , in My house onion parathas will be cooked , I do not follow ur ways , I do what pleases my hubby . Fine . But if ur in their house , abide by their rules . So simple .

Hetal acted like she didn't know anything about the belief. In fact, she use to taunt Mona about it before she married Karan. Making faces at the smell of onion and garlic. Hetal has no respect for anyone. For her its my way or the high way. I agree, if baa goes to her house and threw a fit. I would side with Hetal because its her house and her rules...Well nevertheless, in my POV HETAL was wrong, not cooking with onions and garlic. I can't imagine life without them...lol...but if I ever went to someones home that followed such a belief, I would give all my due respect and not do anything to hurt their belief. I won't die if I don't eat it for a couple a days...😆...Hetal just needs a reality check...

Absolutely agreed again ...very well said . She refuses to adjust ANYWHERE ...be it Bedis or Gandhis . Well they r both joint families , its NOT her own nuclear family with Karan . If she lives with them , u gotta abide by THEIR rules . In your house do what u want , but when u live with others , especially a large amount of ELDERS, u gotta respect them . Hetal is insensitively selfish and terribly aggressive and needs a solid reality check .

i totally disagree with u...and disagree with ppl who r saying u should follow their rules if u r in their house... here gandhi's eat vegeterian n everybody saying hetal should follow them..wat if gandhi's eats only NV and hetal/karan should eat NV if they r vegeterians? ppl can eat vegetrian though they r Non vegetrians ...wat abt ppl who r vegetrians ..can they force them to eat NV just becoz it is their house rule to cook NV daily n eat the same? bukwas...totally ridiculous n logic less.. wat d hell they r showing ...n I pity ppl who r just expressing their views for the sake of characters which they like or dislike... one should always respect others feelings... if they wants to eat something which others dont like they should allow them n hetal didnt ask them cook or eat wat she prepares...someone can adjust the place or any other thing..but for food no one can adjust ... If anybody comes to ask n me to eat which i dont like i vl never... And vl like never eat if they dont prepare it properly...I would prefer to stay hungry rather eating which i dont like and would glad to cook something which i like...

If it is for one day or two days can adjust ...like if i go to somebody's place and have lunch/dinner ..fine... If i am staying over thr can never ever able to do that..
if u r not troubling them making those ppl to eat which they dont like that is different... wat a big deal if they cook it on their own... my self a non vegeterian and my roomie is a vegeterian ..
believe me she dont even touch the dishwasher scrub if i use it for cleaning non vegeterian vessels...at the same i respects her feelings and keep the things away from her ...
we r in 21st century not living in 1900's ...all i say to ppl who r against this cooking funda is'
.

When living in a joint family especially more than one generation living together it is extremely important for everyone to come together...Just because house is owned by a particular person does not mean they completely rule...If they want to live that way than there wont be a joint family. Some give and take must happen. Or just be a nuclear family of your own..
Whether it is about food or anything people have to come to a common ground...Elders have to learn to understand young generation and where they are coming from and same goes for youner ones to respect elder's opinion..Times change and so do people have to..
Joint family is not a dictatorship...The more family members show understanding and remembr the reason why living together and make the most of it..It is doable but everyone must be on the same page..
It is never my way or highway for any one be it elder or younger one...If you want your kids to be around than u must always remember how u felt when u were young...Be young at heart but wise...
With food as onion-garlic if elders are going to be so strict abt it than younger generation who might not have same belief may eat it outside or hide it from the elders..I am sure there is some where a win-win situation if they can communicate and work towards it..
My belief yet again..

You have brought up a great point. Some people forget about their beliefs and what is right or wrong when defending or going against characters. There is no rule to follow something when you are in somebody else's house. I was vegetarian for a few years and we were invited to my cousin's house. Everybody was eating meat but that does not mean that they should have expected me to eat meat also. I had planned that I would only eat plain rice and that is about it but they made arrangements for me and cooked separate rice, 3 kinds of vegetables for me because I was the guest and they did not want to force down their rules or likes or me.

For everyone:

Put yourself in Baa's shoes and try and understand her sentiments. And if that's hard, then imagine her to be your grandmother and see if you would do that Hetal did. (Keep the character the same with their beliefs)
