Chapter 2
She sat up as if electrocuted
"Sorry, no! erm, I mean..I thought it was someone else...erm...hi,"was all she could muster
"No I'm sorry! Actually I meant to send a message but accidentally pressed call. I would have put it down but you picked up so quick and then scared the hell out of me!"
She chuckled and again apologised, relaxing now, secretly thrilled He had made such a wonderful mistake. They exchanged general chit chat for a while and caught up on the last few days' news. She felt so good inside she shivered. But he had to spoil her warm glow
"So who's the low life? Let me guess..." the disapproval was apparent and that was the giveaway. He knew only too well.
In a flash she remembered introducing them to each other. The awkwardness between them both was tangible and the subject matter of one of their many arguments.
"For a rookie he has real chip on his shoulder...who the hell does he think he is? I'm telling you just watch out for him and keep your distance. It's bad enough I have to tolerate this shitty serial stuff you do without some asshole getting fresh and putting his hands all over you.."
"It's a TV serial for feck's sake not a blue movie. Anyway He's not like that you've got it all wrong! He's a really serious guy and serious about his work too! Once you get to know him you'll come to like Him."
"What like you, you mean," he had sneered cruelly "so what have you been doing together to get to know him so well?"
She went quiet for a moment. They were always fighting and He was quite often the reason, only then it hadn't been true...but now...
"Are you still there? Sorry I didn't mean to-" He jolted her out of her reverie
"It's OK. But its late so I'd better turn in. I'm shooting with you for a bit tomorrow how about we catch up at some point before hand, That is, if you're not too preoccupied with your new girlfriend"
" New? Who was the old one? Now I know where those bas***ds at SBS get their scoops. I am WOUNDED!"
She chuckled again, " Not all rumours are fake mister and there's no smoke without fire. For all I know you could be bonking all the women on set but your cool calm exterior and stiff upper lip will never admit to it"
He laughed "Jealousy suit you, youre just envious it's not you in the rumours"
"What do you mean? I'm not jealous why would I be? What do I care a feck who you sleep with or chat with or hang out with or"
He interrupted "I meant not you and your better half being in the news." He sounded genuinely shocked she had misunderstood him?
"What? Oh...I get it ...you meant me and...erm,..as in not me and you..."she stammered
"Me and you? No chance! You made yourself crystal clear on that one. I don't need to be told twice," he said in tight clipped voice.
"I'll catch you tomorrow," and he rang off.
Yeah, She thought, I did didn't I.
All of a sudden she wanted to cry.
She wanted to tell him she had made a mistake, so many mistakes...a mistake thinking she loved the boyfriend, a mistake acceding to his wishes to keep a physical distance from Him whilst shooting.
She remembered bitterly now how she had to speak personally to the producers and ask them to ensure He knew never to hold her hand, avoid as much intimate contact as possible unless absolutely necessary. She had felt so stupid at the time but the boyfriend made her do it and everyone had understood, even Him. He totally adhered to it, apologising each time he accidently brushed against her that even She felt awkward. Some scenes were so painful simply because she was acutely aware of how hard He was trying to do a really good performance and still respect her self imposed rules. The scenes came off well enough but the awkwardness between them was palpable.
She did it because she thought she loved the small minded DJ cum has-been-actor that was her boyfriend. It was a mistake.
The worst mistake however was not listening to Him.
He had said the boyfriend didn't respect her talent, her ambitions, that she should give him the heave ho. She told him to mind his own business.
From that day He had changed, he was still friendly but less tender, less caring. Now, to make matters worse, she had changed.
She slumped back under the covers. What a mess, she thought, at which point her inner voice piped up again
"Do what's right. Your heart needs a spring clean. Out with the old scumbag and in with the new, well not really new but new... old... you know what I mean! He is what you want girl now go get Him!"
A naughty smile played on her lips. Yep, she did want him and She was gonna damn well try and get him too!
She imagined His face, his cool outside beautifully handsome face and how he had no idea what she planned to do. Then she imagined the brooding thunderous face of the Boyfriend when she would tell him they were over.
Her naughty smile vanished as quickly as it came. First things first, she thought, get some sleep.
