Is MBA the most lucrative option for students these days? What do you think of news items like the one below:

- Is it just a PR excercise?

- Does just an MBA from premier schools make you worthy of hefty pay packages?

- Is management just an overrated profession ?

B-school ISB graduates get record salaries

Hyderabad, April 10 (IANS) The Class of 2007 of the premier Indian School of Business (ISB) has attracted record salaries, with the top international offer being $269,000 (Rs.11.8 million) against the highest domestic offer of Rs.4.39 million, it was announced here Tuesday.

The average international salary was $135,000 and the average domestic salary 1.50 million. Interestingly, a large number of students opted for domestic jobs.

'The placement results for 2007 have been outstanding,' ISB dean M. Rammohan Rao said.

'There has been a sharp increase in the CTC (cost-to-company) levels and our students have shown immense confidence in making choices that suit long term career prospects over immediate salaries,' he added.

The Class of 2007 completed the one-year intensive Post Graduate Programme in Management April 7. Of the 416 students in the class, 414 participated in the placement process that concluded Tuesday and, among them, received 584 offers from over 200 companies that visited the campus during the last few months.

'The high CTC levels demonstrate the confidence that companies have in the high quality of the ISB's management talent,' said Rao, even as he added a word of caution.

'We need to take a balanced view of international offers given by multinational companies. I urge everyone to use these figures in the proper context so that potential students may get the correct picture of what they can achieve in a management institution.'

ISB is a research-oriented independent management institution that grooms future leaders for India and the world. Its association with the Kellogg School of Management, The Wharton School, and London Business School makes it a one-of-its-kind in Asia.

The school offers a one-year postgraduate programme; short-duration, high-powered executive education programmes for CEOs and senior executives; and a two-year research fellowship programme.

Haven't read the article.

Well this topic made me think a lot so couldn't answer.. lols.

Guess why? am pursuing MBA finance - had other options but being from finance and IT background I thought management master would give me a boost. However its not gonna help me much but getting acadamic strong to avoid any risk for future requirement for degree.

Well there are to many MS, Msc's etc toh this seemed to me as the most viable option.

Sorry if my response is not in context of DEbate. 😊

So do you feel the MBA is teaching you something more than what you already didnt know?

Will it be improving your job prospects- will you be earning better than your peers who have just a MS or MTech?

Is the MBA giving you more confidence to face a real work environment?

Dont meanto pry... just curious as it would really help to answer my question about MBA being overrrated.

Very good questions Tally, I would like to know the answers too. MBA is the only option everybody has been suggesting (read nudging) to me these days.

MBA gives us the base for developing our managerial skills. You may be able to use the ideas that came about in your discussions during MBA, the case studies, the different view points to the same situation etc. While interviewing, importance is given to the post degree qualifications, because you are expected to use the knowledge from the coursework.
In the day to day planning, re-planning efforts that take place in any field, presence of mind plays a vital role. How would you resolve conflicts between peers, how to budget, plan the work schedule, think of innovative ways to save ... all of this will come in some form or the other in MBA or any post graduate degree that offers prject management, resource management skills...

It has been for a couple of decades,go do engg, then mba(that was the model in the early 90's), I remember my graduation class of 40 15-18 did their MBA right away, a few later on

What do you think of news items like the one below:

I think it is good, there is a key number in that people going for MBA's are/should have experience between 2-13, I think B Schools in US look for 5 or more. People look at the salary and jump into it.

You should have proper idea of the ground level of the field you want to get into, and then jump into it, just learning it for 4 years in school does not give you an idea of how the business actually works

- Is it just a PR excercise?

no, it is a natural progression in the career of a person, you work up the food chain, the higher you go, you need to know more and more people/soft/management skills, you have to learn them it somewhere dont you?

- Does just an MBA from premier schools make you worthy of hefty pay packages?

Kind of, yes

1. The premier schools carry a good lot of teachers, people who know the industry, people who are just not of the acedemic style

2. Premier schools have people from premier institutions/companies going in, You mingle in a group of people who are in the mindset of premier business, plus you have some young guns with premier thoughts. So the exchange of idea's is much better, IMHO MBA should be a interactive course, not only a theory course(most of us Indians look at it as another theory class, which is wrong)

3. The networking is top-notch, that actually seals the deal for me.

- Is management just an overrated profession ?

If you are at the bottom of the food chain yes, otherwise no, How long are you going to work on the shop floor/work as a programmer? You need to start giving back on some of that experience and helping make the process smoother, One can choose to sit at that level follow it upto the top with the techy side, but there is a ceiling to it

Again IMHO, MBA is a good option, but not fresh out of school, need to get a few years of experience under the belt, it really helps

but it is not the only way, there are other ways too, sometimes I dont think the price of an MBA in many of these schools is worth of education they give.

Is the MBA giving you more confidence to face a real work environment?Where does this come from?. MBA is just limited to the job market...

MBA is not overrated its an essential component in career growth...But the ways MBA's are being dished out, in shady schools, any school, by mail, online... its value becomes questionable....

True.. some amount of job experience and of course as one gets older, one is supposed to get 'wiser'...😕.. and that is when an MBA will be more effective, as we can react to things in a different fashion.

Like Sareg says.. sometimes the money is not worth the course.. it all depends on where one is headed career-wise...
