What happened after Karan Singh Grover, Barun Sobti, Pratyusha Banerjee, Mohnish Behl left the shows that made them famous?

Actors quit a television show mainly for two reasons - a better opportunity or simply because they have issues with the production house involved. But what happens next?

Sometimes TV serials go on for seven years and sometimes they last only for seven months, but once the audience begins to watch a show, they tend to become fans of the actors who play their favourite roles and the characters themselves. A daily soap requires television actors to eat, sleep and live the show and the roles they play for up to 18 hours a day. Hence it is very important for them to love their work and the people they work with.

Very often, stars leave shows that have made them household names coz of creative differences with the production house involved. Some actors like Barun Sobti, Rajeev Khandelwal and Prachi Desai - to name a few - are lured by the big screen, looking to become the next Salman Khan or Ranbir Kapoor in Bollywood. And those like Karan Singh Grover and Smriti Irani may have found new openings in production while Mohnish Behl and Pratyusha Banerjee reportedly just got bored of playing their characters for so long.

But what happens when the audience's favourite actors decide to leave a show midway through a story sequence? The daily soap and the production house ultimately face the wrath of the audience. The serial could suffer and even come to a crashing and unexpected halt. Or, in some cases, a new actor is hired and does more than justice to the role. Consider these TV shows that suffered huge losses when their main leads quit...

Balika Vadhu - Anandi - Pratyusha Banerjee

Pratyusha Banerjee played the adult version of Anandi in Colors' popular show Balika Vadhu. The actor had awesome chemistry with both Shashank Vyas and Siddharth Shukla, and people instantly took to her simplicity and cute face. However, it was a whole different ball game off camera. If rumours are anything to go by, Pratyusha repeatedly made excuses to bunk work, which irked the producers; eventually the actor decided to quit. The role was then taken up by Toral Rasputra, who is struggling for acceptance a year later.

FIR - Chandramukhi Chautala - Kavita Kaushik

Kavita Kaushik was accepted with arms wide open for her role in FIR as Chandramukhi Chautala, the Haryanvi cop. But eventually the actor got bored and expressed her desire to do other roles. The makers then offered her Tota Weds Maina on the same channel. Kavita initially tried to do justice to both shows, but as the stress increased, she requested an exit from one. The production house changed the scripts and introduced Chitrashi Rawat in FIR in a similar character, which resulted in TRPs of both shows dwindling rapidly and the makers were forced to pull the plug on Tota Weds Maina. They rehired Kavita in FIR, which has regained its numbers to a great extent since then.

Kuch Toh Log Kahenge - Dr Ashutosh - Mohnish Behl

Inspired by the Pakistani show Dhoop Kinare, Rajan Shahi came up with the concept of Kuch Toh Log Kahenge - the story of a younger woman falling for an older man. The story worked well and seemed authentic as long as Mohnish Behl played the older man. When the actor decided to quit the show coz he was no longer comfortable doing it, the makers roped in Sharad Kelkar to take over. Fans of Mr Behl and Dhoop Kinare were miffed with the change and vowed never to watch the show again. The numbers dropped initially, but later picked up again.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon - Arnav Singh Raizada - Barun Sobti

Barun Sobti received the adulation of his fans worldwide for his role as Arnav Singh Raizada. But when the actor got the opportunity to enter Bollywood, he approached Gul Khan to allow him to make an exit. The makers let the actor go with the hope of casting an equally competent Viraf Patel in the role. Unfortunately, they had to face the wrath of the audience when they announced the replacement. The makers then decided against replacing the actor and simply ended the show.

Qubool Hai - Asad Ahmed Khan - Karan Singh Grover

The latest on the list of shows facing the consequences of an early exit is Gul Khan's Qubool Hai. Karan Singh Grover completed his one-year contract with Four Lions Films and decided to quit. However, this did not go down well the channel and what followed was a blame game where the channel accused Karan of being unprofessional and Karan called the channel ill-informed'. The makers replaced the actor on January 10 with Raqesh Vashisth, but not before facing the wrath of KSG's fans. The verdict is awaited on whether the show will survive this crisis and if Raqesh will be accepted with as much enthusiasm.

Thanks for sharing.
As a viewer, I have mostly found it hard to accept replacements and to be able to connect with the character in the same way as I would have with the former actor/ess.
In the show Ek Mahal ho Sapno ka, the character played by the actress Ragini was replaced and after 3-4 months she was brought back. I was very happy when she came back as I could not connect with the temporary replacement at all.
But in the same show another character of Panna (not lead) was replaced and I was quite happy with the replacement. I think it really depends.
Coming to BV, Anandi, Ganga and Gehna are no more the same characters that I knew. I found it relatively easy to accept Gehna's replacement but haven't been able to accept Anandi & Ganga with their new faces as such.
The story line is also weak and the show and its lead females do not interest me enough anymore.

People have different view points as a viewer I have been able to accept Toral as Anandi, and happy with her.
And honestly Pratyusha as Anandi never appealed me. My thought are different but that is what I feel.

I have not seen any of the shows mentioned there other than BV.
In BV there have been lot of replacements be it Suguna and Gehna and now the female leads.

Gehna and Suguna's replacements could be accepted because the replacements have happened after the scope for that character has finished. Both the characters' storyline got over by the time the replacement happened. Now both the women are content with their lot and there is not much to show through their characters.

Anandi - Started of as a child and the first replacement was a logical and in keeping with the story and the replacement of the actress at that time was expected but still she was not accepted whole heartedly by many viewers at the time mainly because she couldn't measure up in terms of talent and physical presence on the screen with the actress who played Anandi before her .Many of us could not connect with her or the character it was difficult to believe that the child who we knew as Anandi has grown up to be this way.
But she was accepted eventually because of the strong story line she was given and her performance has improved with time..

But the current replacement even though her performance has improved with time and does look right for the character she is playing she does not have a strong story line that brings out all the facets of the character so that the connection becomes easier.
The way the story is going on now it would be unappealing even if there had been no replacement.

Ganga to begin with the character itself has been very poorly sketched by the writers and most of the contribution seemed to have come from the actress herself and now the replacement even though she is a competent actress she is struggling because the character has been butchered so much and no one knows what the original character has been like.

Bottom line a strong storyline is needed to bring out all the facets of the character to make the actor and the character connect with the viewers.

I feel for a replacement to be accepted thoroughly he / she needs the following support;

- Maintaining the character sketch - Cvs have not maintained Anandi's strong and progressive character post AnSh marriage. Rather they have turned her into an aimless soul, making her look regressive and lost. Instead of evolving her with time, they have brought her to stand still.

For Ganga; the fiery, strong, sensitive and determined woman is lost long back. Who we have now is a replica of ex-bahu of Singhs.

- Chemistry with co-star - I find T's chemistry with Sid quite weak. I have never been after romance in the show, but earlier days of AnSh made people want to fall in love, while now it is just a scene or a gradual progress in the story. They don't leave me day dreaming.

Sargun's chemistry with Shashank has also not come out well. It feels disconnected.

- Story line - the show does not have any effective story line. Shiv's identity and Amol's adoption has not brought any connectivity with the character Anandi.

Ganga's stretchy pregnancy is boring and meaningless

- Actor's acting skills - Toral's acting is not up to the mark. Her expressions are similar for most kind of emotions. Be it shock, sadness, worries or happiness. Yes she has improved but still.

Sargun is fairly good actress, but can't bring out Ganga.

I feel a combination of the above has to be consistent for replacements to get acceptance. Rushed up tracks and loop holes in story will not bring out the impact.

Agree its difficult to accept replacements
just look at thgis forum many people are Pratz and Sriti fans including me
for me the reason i didn't accept replacements because i get attached to the old ones so its difficult to forget the old one and it is also based on their acting and looks ...
Some people may love the previous one while some can love the new ones its based on our thoughts but for me after watching old one with lots of love its difficult for me to accept the new one andif Jagya is replaced i won't accept any actor in Shashank's place anymore as Jagya even they bring highest paid actor also...
