Chapter 27

I ran out of the room. Raghu bhi na, I thought. I went downstairs and sat at the table. Raghu came down as well and sat next to me. We sat quietly and had dinner. After dinner, I helped Aunty clean up the table. Finally I went up to my room and changed. It was almost mid night and I was really tired. As I lay down, I heard something crunch under my pillow. I got up and lifted my pillow to find a sheet of paper. I opened it. It said

Baara waje mujhe terrace par milna

Raghu wore this. I looked at the clock. It was 11:55. I quickly got up and looked in the mirror. I fixed my hair and headed up to the terrace. I looked at my watch and saw that it was 11:59. I couldn't wait anymore. I walked in. It was dark. "Raghu," I said. I heard something behind me but I was too scared to turn around. "Happy birthday Miss Kaul," I heard Raghu say and the lights turned on. There were balloons everywhere and in the middle there was a cake. I turned around and said, "Raghu yeh-" before I could complete my sentence, I saw Raghu was standing there and had a necklace in his hand. "Yeh tere liye," he said. He showed it to me. It was a beautiful heart shaped pendant. He opened it and in it was a picture of me and Raghu. I honestly didn't know how to react. Raghu did everything to make me happy and to bring a smile on my face. "Raghu, tum mere liye itna sab kyun karte ho?" I asked. "Tu hi toh meri sab kuch hain, tere liye nahi karunga toh kis ke liye karunga?" he replied. "Par Raghu, yeh sab-" before I could continue, he put his finger on my lips and said "Shh. Kitne sawal puchti hain tu Miss Kaul? Tu meri jaan hain, issi liye maine yeh sab kiya."

Before she said anything else, I put my finger on her lips and said, "Shh. Kitne sawal puchti hain tu Miss Kaul? Tu meri zindagi hain, issi liye maine yeh sab kiya. Jis din se maine apne pyaar ko apnaya tha, uss din se khud ko ek vaada bhi kiya tha, ki main hamesha tere chere pe smile rakhunga. Hamesha tujhe khush rakhunga." I could see that there were tears welling up in her eyes. I caught the tear before it could fall farther. "Meri na aaj tak samajh mein nahi aaya ki baat baat par teri aankhon mein aansu kyun aa jate hain?" I said. "Raghu," she said and slightly hit me on the shoulder. "Chal, main tujhe yeh phenadeta hoon," I said and she handed me the necklace. She turned around and moved her hair to the side. I put the necklace around her neck and fastened it. She turned around again and I took her hand and said, "Chal aa tera cake kaate hain." I took her to the table and showed her the cake.

He took my hand and led me to the table. I looked at the cake. It said Happy Birthday Miss Kaul. I looked at him and smiled. He smiled back and picked up the matchbox and light up the candles. "Chal, apni wish maang le," he said. "Mujhe jo chaiye, woh toh mujhe mil gaya," I said, looking into his eyes. He looked at me with a huge smile on his face. "Par phir bhi, wish toh tujhe maangni hi padegi," he said. "Theek hain," I said and closed my eyes. I wished that Raghu would always be happy and would be with me for the rest of my life. I opened my eyes and blew out the candle.

She closed her eyes and made a wish. I was noticing that these days, there was a different glow to her face. It only made her even more beautiful. She opened her eyes and blew out the candle. "Kya maanga?" I asked. "Jab tak wish puri nahi ho jaati, tab tak baatate nahi hain," she said. I held her waist and pulled her closer. "Oh, aisi bast hain. Tu mujhe nahi bategi?" I said. "Haan, nahi batoongi," she said and ran away. I ran after her and both of us ended up falling on the small bed that was still on the terrace. She landed on top of me and had a huge smile on her face. "Yedi hain tu," I said. "Main yedi hoon, toh tum bhi toh yede ho na," she replied. She moved next to me and rested her head on my chest and said "Thank you." "Kiss liye?" I asked. "Mera birthday itna special banana ke liye," she replied. I looked down and kissed the top of her head. She looked up at me and then looked up at the sky. "Yeh raat kitni khoobsurat hain, hain na?" she said. "Hmm," I replied. After that we just lay there for a while. It was quiet. After a few moments, I noticed that Antara had fallen asleep. I didn't want to wake her up, so I picked her up and took her down to her room. After gently placing her on the bed, I put the blanket on her and sat down next to her. I took a single rose out of my pocket and put it next to her on the pillow. I leaned in and gave her a kiss on her forehead. "Happy birthday Miss Kaul," I whispered. I got up to leave but didn't get too far. I turned and saw that Antara was holding my hand. I sat back down and tried to get her to let go, but she wouldn't. I gave up and sat on the floor next to her bed. I looked at her sleeping peacefully and eventually fell asleep.
