How Big Is Bollywood in India?

"Film director Karan Johar recently said: "Of the 1.2 billion population of India, movies should reach out to at least 300 million people. But currently, our reach is limited to 45 million. If we figure out how to cover this gap, it will be a game changer."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22349712

"Indian Film Industry's reach is very limited as compared to the population size of our nation. With 1.21 Billion people rising every morning, one would expect the film industry to penetrate at least 20% of the population, but the numbers suggest that the reach is as low as 45 million people, less than 4% of our population. Even with 2/3rd of our population in villages, this number comes as a harsh shock. The number of screens in India is less than 15,000 compared to the United States of America where there are more than 40,000 screens. The ratio is severely disturbed."

45 million 😆... oh dear, this is what everyone is arguing over 😆 The Khan's are even more insignificant than I thought. 😆

Piracy has eaten away a big share, that audience doesn't go to cinema halls.

Ticket price are sky-rocketing... One ticket for Rs. 900 and when that film also comes out to be worthless, who will like to see it!??
Film come directly on TV a month after, why will audience bother to pay such huge amount of money then?

That can't be true considering Gadar alone sold almost 41 million tickets.

Most Watched Films In Theatres (Modern Era)
Rank Film Year Gross Average Ticket Rate Probable Average Ticket Rate Footfalls
1 Gadar Ek Prem Katha 2001 130,25,00,000 40 32 4,07,00,000
2 Hum Aapke Hain Kaun 1994 123,00,00,000 35 35 3,51,00,000
3 Raja Hindustani 1996 85,00,00,000 36 30 2,83,00,000
4 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge 1995 106,50,00,000 35 38 2,80,00,000
5 Three Idiots 2010 269,50,00,000 88 105 2,57,00,000

But I agree, its not as big as people believe it to be. In a poverty stricken country like India where the average income is less than 100 dollars a month, movies are a luxury that just can't be afforded.

Gadar has sold the most ticket to 41 million reach.which is 4 %.meaning that the rest doesnt even come near the 4% reach 😆

Multiplex has given the fine movie watching experience but at the same time it is more costly than watching movie in Single Screens. A Burger cost around 70-80 bucks while cold drinks cost 100-120 bucks... 100-120 bucks is normal ticket price in some city plexes...
In Metro cities, average ticket price in plexes ticket price starts from 250-500 bucks... now for recent big films it was hiked to 500-1000 & now for D3 range is 800-900-1400.

All these factors plus fine quality DVDSCR print arriving on same day of movie release on Internet adds up to cinema not reaching to bigger area.

Yes but reach is much more than just footfalls. Accounting for the fact that many people might have watched the film in theatres more than once, less than 30% I would assume, actually went and watched the film. Others didn't feel like watching it or watched it on TV. So the reach has to be much more than 45 million. At least 150 Million.
