I think some people may assume Arjun was of dark complexion:

Nar and Narayan were both of dark complexion. Nar reincarnated as Arjun and Narayan as Krishna.

Perhaps this is why sometimes Arjun may be depicted dark skinned?

I had heard that Krishna, Draupadi(KRISHNAA) & Arjuna all r dark complexioned. in those days, being dark was a sigh of beauty. i think after the arrinal of Mughals & onwards dark skin became such contemptuous thing, especially in North.
[Reft of diadem, the dark complexioned and youthful Partha looked beautiful like a blue mountain of lofty summit. Binding then his locks with a white cloth, Arjuna stood perfectly unmoved.] -Vyasa's Mahabharata, Karna Parva.

B R Chopra's Krishna was indeed dark - remember Nitish Bharadwaj. Draupadi was also not fair.
Yes Draupadi and Krishna were dark. Arjuna was not as dark as them. Arjuna was a masculine great handsome macho hero kind. Warna itne sare women mein wo itna popular hota nahin. Draupadi, Ulupi, Chotrangada, Subhadra and Urvashi also ... By character Arjuna was not a womeniser .. still all women used to fall for him
Krishna was Tall/ Dark/ Handsome and real charming character. Draupadi was not-fair and very stunning ...

Pandu called arjuna krishna as an endearment and krishna-arjuna are reffered as THE TWO KRISHNAS dozens of times but arjuna wasnt as dark as krishna, he is decribed to have a very unique skin color.
and they could have looked for another krishna but SRJ has made his place by playing vishnu in DKDM& JSK and also ram in the former. He would have been the first choice regardless of his skin color and shaheer is tan enough to not be called fair.
