Shisha cafes told sling your hookahs

SHISHA cafes in the north west face closure after MPs voted to make smoking illegal in all public indoor places within 18 months. (June 2007)
The ban would mean the end of shisha cafes whose clients are mainly Muslims who use shisha as an alternative to drinking alcohol, forbidden in Islam.
There are at least three shisha cafes in Manchester and several in West Yorkshire.
They are all facing closure because almost their entire income comes from hiring out hookah pipes to customers. The hookahs contain flavoured tobacco, including apple, strawberry, chocolate and banana. They are one of the few places that Muslim men and women mix socially.

I like the title of that article so kept it for this topic 😛
Do you think it is fair for Shisha to come under the smoking ban? From what i have heard it does not harm the body like cigarettes and unlike cigarettes you would not go to a cafe/restaurant alone to do Shisha but with a group of friends, therefore it becomes more of a social thing.
I have a cafe near my house that does Shisha, it's very popular amongst the college students and unlike with cigarettes the cafe/restaurants would stand to lose out on alot of customers if Shisha was banned.
What do you think of the ban? Is it justified?

"The ban would mean the end of shisha cafes whose clients are mainly Muslims who use shisha as an alternative to drinking alcohol, forbidden in Islam."

Smoking sheesha has nothing to do with Islam, nor is it an alternative to alcohol!!! Smoking sheesha is a cultural practice in the Middle East, and no more.

Coming back to your question about the ban - I remember reading a report in the local newspapers in the UAE that shisha being less harmful is a myth. If I can dig it out, I will post it here. As someone physically allergic to tobacco smoke, I can vouch for the fact that MY lungs cannot make out the difference between cigarette, cigar, beedi or shisha smoke! So, in my opinion the ban is justified.

Hookah Clubs or Bars have become very popular in West Coast USA. Many people from India even bringing them. Here is what I found out abt Shisha Hookah on Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shisha

A Shisha pipe (Persian:?, glass), also known as a hookah, water pipe, or argileh, is a smoking pipe. The term is often used to refer to the tobacco smoked in shisha pipes. Less frequently, this substance is called tobamel or maassel.

The history of shisha goes back to the northern parts of Mali which was part of Africa (now known as Mali). Tobacco used to be smoked in sand boxes. Later, wealthy Malians gave hookah the appearance they have today; they were designed to smoke opium, and hashish. The hookah made its way from the Malian Kingdom to other parts of the Persian empire which also included India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, much of Middle Asia and Arab parts of Northern Africa.[1]

Today the Hookah is a smoking pipe used worldwide. The term "shisha" is primarily used for water pipes in Egypt and the Arabic countries of the Persian Gulf (such as Bahrain, UAE, and Saudi Arabia). It is referred to as Argileh in Arab Mediterranean countries.

The practice of adding strong flavors is a relatively recent one but has grown in popularity in the past 20 years.

Shisha
The word "Shisha" comes from the Persian word for glass. Alternate terms discussed here originate from terms for the smoking material itself but none of them are used among English-speakers with the same frequency as shisha due to its distinctive double voiceless postalveolar fricative.

Shisha is also known as Narghila in classical Arabic, and Argileh in spoken Arabic (Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, Jordanian accents).

There are generally regarded to be two classifications of shisha tobacco: maassal and tumbak(ajami). Ajami shisha is made from pure tobacco leaves and is usually more expensive than maassal. Ajami shisha is soaked in water for 10 minutes and then shaped into an inverted cone and put on the bowl (or the head of the shisha, "rass"). The cone should be poked in the middle all the way down for allowing air in. A lit charcoal is placed on the top. Maassal is made of tobacco, honey, fruits(apple, strawberries, mint, mixed fruit, etc.) and molasses. A deeper bowl is used for maassal than for ajami, and the lit charcoal is placed on a small sheet of punctured foil surmounting the bowl and its contents, rather than directly on the shisha.

That is the Shisha tobacco, as shown here, often has a damp and sticky appearance derived from the honey or other sweeteners added. I found information on Wikipedia at the link in my first post.
