Yes Shrija, this is not that SC either. No prob. Will gladly await 'loads of writing' that spurs...😊

The SLB serial motivated me to read the original version of this book - all 4 volumes . 150 years ago, people did criticise Goverdharam Tripathi, who was a social reformer, for not getting Kumud remarried . I believe he chicken out in the end .( Im sorry GT ).
GT wanted to change the 19th century Gujarati society . He created a hero who was very well educated and modern and did not believe in rigid customs . He was generous, sensitive and at the same time haughty and aloof . He was wealthy but did not care about the money . Saraswatichandra was the first modern hero . All the girls desired to have a husband like him. GT needed a girl to suit this modern hero. A girl who was educated and accomplished . She should understand him and stand by him in all the difficult situations.
Saraswatichandra and Kumud Sundari were the popular role models of Gujarati society . The girls and boys would identify with Kumud or Saras . Every literate Gujarati family had this book in their possession.
Serial is now not going by the book ...understandably , as it is adapted to the present age and TRP ( but I don't like it when it becomes saas-bahu type ). I feel everyone should have liberty to interpret the novel, but retaining the idea of change in the bad social customs of the society .
Im happy that the book which was lying in old wooden cupboards has now come out of shelves. And more people now know about Goverdhanram Tripathi and Saraswatichandra .
It is always a pleasure to read everybody's commnets here in this forum.

Why! You should have been sharing more extensively friend! This is priceless. Especially when they had certain character consistency intact...now, not much matter perhaps.

@ bold,
That is where, this 'great, venerable' author failed- let me charge so even as a common reader, my democratic right...But there is more to it. My friend. In exact reverse of his proclaimed 'goal', the undercurrent operative was a regressive orthodoxy. Ostensible reasons; 'widowhood' or VC's jeopardised Diwangiri, were also not real reasons. Base for this claim? U should read Umashankar Joshi's explanatory critique on GMT's SC. Umashankar Joshi- another heavyweight of our language. It explains much...

There is more to it. He appears to have actually 'changed' his intended course midway. There is an astounding pointer- which way he was initially shaping his end. In his own words. This serial has goaded me reading more on it, which, in its first read was a curt discard. Never thought, I will revisit it.🤢

English translation of all the 4 volumes is under process . Hopefully it should be out by next year . As I had mentioned that this book has come of closet ... the demand for the book has increased after the serial . So I thank SLB for giving new life to the novel .
