Five-year-old Mehvish Naik sat in the middle of her room surrounded with crayons and discarded papers. Her little tongue poked out from between her teeth as she concentrated on colouring the "A" with a blue crayon.
"Mehu! Dinner is ready! Beta, where are you?" Her mother's sweet voice called. Mehvish hastily hid the paper she was drawing on underneath her bed and started to draw randomly on another piece of paper.
Antara Naik walked into her daughter's room to see her sitting on the carpet drawing. Mehvish looked up and smiled a bright dimpled smile, a trait that she had inherited from her mother.
"Look Ammi! I drew a, a," Mehvish rotated the paper and looked at it from every angle trying to figure out what she had drawn.
"It's beautiful sweetie," Antara cooed as she picked her daughter off the floor and swung her around.
"Where's my little star?" A deep voice came. Both mother and daughter smiled their identical smiles as they turned to look at the new arrival.
"Abbu!" Mehvish squealed. Raghu smiled brightly and opened his arms for Antara to transfer his little star into his arms.
"Hey little star," he said softly pecking her on the nose. Mehvish giggled and wrapped her small arms around her father's neck, giving him a hug.
Antara smiled at the pair, something that she often did whenever she saw the father daughter duo. When they had first found out she was pregnant, Raghu had almost suffered from a heart attack. The news of becoming a father had shaken him to the core due to his fear that he wouldn't make a good father, but with Antara and his family's support, he had overcome that fear. Needless to say, not even half an hour had passed after Mehvish's birth that she had her father wrapped around her little pinkie.
Antara shook herself out of her thoughts when Raghu looked at her questioningly over the top of Mehvish's head. She shook her head and headed out the door, knowing that Raghu would soon be wanting his dinner.
Mehvish blabbered on and on to her father as he carried her to his and Antara's room and set her down in the middle of the bed. As she chatted on, Raghu headed off to freshen up, thinking how his daughter was a true carbon copy of her mother. Chatty and obnoxious, but at the same time, cute and charming.
"And then Spongebob told Patrick that they wouldn't go catching Jellyfizz!" Mehvish exclaimed with a horrified look on her face.
"It's jellyfish', little star," he corrected her.
"That's what I said, jellyfizz!" Mehvish said. Raghu laughed and started to tickle her, the air filled with her loud laughter.
"Raghu! Please bring Mehvish downstairs. I have dinner ready!" Antaras voice came through the door. Raghu scooped his little star in his arms again and the two headed down the stairs.
After setting her down on the chair at the dining table and tucking a serviette under her chin, Raghu walked to his wife who was busy making rotis.
"I'll bring these out in just a second," she told him hurriedly. Raghu wrapped his arms around her petite waist from and kissed her cheek.
"Raghu, Mehvish is sitting right there," Antara admonished as a pretty blush spread over her cheeks.
"She's busy with her toys," Raghu replied as he tightened his grip around her waist, gesturing towards Mehvish who was talking in hushed tones with her teddy bear, Boo.
While her father was busy wooing her mother with his kitchen romance skills, Mehvish was having a serious discussion with Boo. Boo was a gift from her beloved chachi rukhsana and machmach Chachu on her second birthday. Since then, wherever Mehvish went, Boo went with and whenever Mehvish needed someone to confide in, Boo was always there.
"It's a seakit Boo," Mehvish whispered to Boo, mispronouncing "secret" as "seakit".
"Ammi almost found out when she came to get me for dinner. We should be more careful," Mehvish whispered, her eyes narrowing as she glanced here and there as if someone was listening to her.
"Seakit mission," Mehvish whispered patting Boo's head.
"Ammi! Boo and I are hungry!" Mehvish hollered, though it was not needed considering that the kitchen was not very far from the table. But it was enough to make Antara glare at Raghu, who was slyly trying to kiss her, and push him away to walk to the table with a plate piled with hotrotis.
"Here I am, pumpkin," Antara said as she sat down next to Mehvish.
Mehvish tried to reach her plate but her short arms weren't allowing her. After struggling for about a minute or two, she looked at her father with an adorable pout on her face. Raghu, seeing his daughter's pout, immediately asked her what the matter was.
"I can't touch the plate," Mehvish said.
"Not touch', sweetie, reach'. You can't reach' the plate," Antara corrected as she served her husband his food then her daughter.
"That's what I said. I can't touch the plate," Mehvish replied. Antara hid her smile by kissing the top of her head.
"Raghu, could you please put the chair forward," Antara requested. But Raghu was way ahead of her and had pushed the chair in a bit and was sitting down at his own spot already.
The Naik family enjoyed a wonderful meal together with both Raghu and Antara listening to Mehvish talk non-stop, only stopping to chew her food when her mother placed a morsel into her mouth. The little girl was talking at a speed of 100 m/s and her parents were having a difficult time keeping up. When they finished with dinner, Mehvish squirmed and tried to get down the chair. Raghu and Antara watched her struggle for a while; enjoying the sheer cuteness of it all before Antara's motherly instincts kicked in and she helped her down the chair.
As soon as Mehvish's feet touched the ground, she was gone with a flash saying that Boo was sleepy and so was she. Antara laughed at being reminded of her own childhood days and stood up to clear up the kitchen.
Mehvish shut the door behind her and went into a fit of giggles. She looked at Boo and smiled while holding her finger to her lips.
"They don't know anything," Mehvish assured Boo. She went to her bed and pulled out the paper that she had stuffed underneath it when her mother and come calling her.
Mehvish sat back down in her fortress of crayons and resumed her drawing. Occasionally she would stop and tilt her head, observing her handiwork, then would either make a face or simply return to her task. Once she felt she had finished, Mehvish stood up, picked up the paper and walked to her bed, spreading the paper on top of it. She leaned down and placed her tiny hands on either side of the paper and inspected it, imitating the pose that she had often seen her father use when he was in his office.
"Looks good. Say, Boo, I think I should tell Abbu that I will do well as an arktet when I grow up," Mehvish informed Boo. Apparently her skills were good enough to make her believe that she could become a successful "architect" like her father.
Checking the time, Mehvish rolled up the paper and sprinted out the room towards her parent's room. When she got there the door to their room was closed and some weird noises were coming from inside. Going up on her tiptoes, Mehvish turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.
"Ammi? Abbu?" Mehvish said walking into the room.
"Mehvish!" Antara screamed surprised. She immediately pushed Raghu off of her and quickly pulled on her discarded nightgown before her daughter could see anything. Raghu pulled his pants on furtively as his daughter made her way over the bed.
"What's up, little star?" Raghu asked.
"Abbu, what were you doing to Ammi?" Mehvish asked her pretty face adorned with a look of puzzlement. Antara's face burned and Raghu's face broke into a grin.
"I was hugging your Ammi, sweetheart. See, she does so much work I wanted to help her release some stress," Raghu replied winking at a tomato red Antara. Mehvish smiled and tried to climb onto the bed. When she couldn't, Raghu tucked his hands under her arms and picked her up to put her on the bed. Mehvish quickly enveloped her mother in a hug.
"Ammi, you shouldn't work so much. You can always ask me to help you, I'm always availball," Mehvish said.
"Not availball' sweetie, availanble'," Antara corrected smiling at her cute little daughter.
"That's what I said, availball," Mehvish replied. Raghu chuckled and sat down on the bed.
"What's this for, little star?" He asked. Mehvish, who had momentarily forgotten the reason for her visit to her parent's room, looked at the clock, which read 12:01 and quickly stuck the paper out into Raghu's face.
"It's for you," Mehvish told him. Raghu looked at Antara, who shrugged. Taking the paper from her tiny hands, Raghu unrolled it and laid it out on the bed. Immediately his eyes filled with tears of joy.
On the paper, in her five-year-old handwriting were the words "Hapee Birdday Abbu! I luv yoo!" The fact that she had misspelled "Happy birthday" or "Love you" didn't matter to him because for Raghu, this was probably the best birthday gift he had ever received in his entire life. He gathered his daughter into his arms and cradled her against his chest, showering her face with kisses.
"Thank you, little star. My Mehvish, my little star," Raghu cooed as he held his daughter close to himself.
Antara also had felt her eyes pooling with tears as she witnessed the sheer joy on her husband's face. Mehvish was the missing spark, ever since she had come into their life; Raghu had forgotten all his previous insecurities and had embraced fatherhood and the duty of a husband faithfully. He was no longer the emotionally challenged man that Antara had fallen in love with seven years ago. All thanks to Mehvish.
Antara reached out and ran a hand through her daughter's raven tresses and leaned over to kiss her on the top of her head as she lay resting her head against her father's chest.
"You made Abbu so happy today, pumpkin," Antara whispered. Mehvish smiled at her mother and kissed her cheek.
"I love you, Ammi. I love you, Abbu," Mehvish said to both her parents. Raghu and Antara smiled brightly down at her, their eyes glistening with unshed tears.
"We love you too little star," both of them said. Raghu wrapped the two most important women in his life in his strong arms. Mehvish was pressed against his chest with her face tucked against the base of his neck and Antara's head lay against his heart, where she rightfully belonged. Antara looked up at Raghu then leaned down again to whisper something in Mehvish's ear.
Mehvish's eyes went wide with surprise and her body went stiff when her mother whispered something in her ear. Raghu looked at the two with confusion, his eyebrows furrowing when Mehvish stiffened in his arms. Then all of a sudden...
"I'M GOING TO BE A BIG SISTER!!!" Mehvish screamed at the top of her lungs almost giving her poor Abbu another heart attack at the news while her Ammi went into a fit of hysterics.
