Chapter Sixteen - The Reason To Live
There was a burning sensation in my throat. That's all I remember and then my eyes slowly opened. I groaned in pain as I swallowed back some saliva. I clutched at my throat. I heard a noise to my right and opened my eyes to see that it was RK. I could see a worried expression on his face through my tired eyes.
"They pumped your stomach."
He sounded angry yet worried all at the same time. It was a tone I hadn't heard escape his lips before.
It was then that I realized that I had lived. I survived. Tears blurred my vision as I attempted to sit up.
"Madhu?! What are you doing!"
RK placed his hands on my shoulders, holding me down as I struggled to get free. I let the tears fall from my eyes as I slowly calmed myself.
"I...WHY. Why'd...I want to d...I don't want to...to live...I want to be with my par..."
I broke down in tears once again, hearing the beeping of the machine, which was measuring my heart rate.
"Madhu! Calm the heck down!"
I listened to him, shutting up as nurses ran into the room.
"RK, tell them to go..."
"It's fine, I got it under control. Tell the doctor he doesn't have to come."
They nodded their heads, leaving. Then suddenly RK turned his attention to me with eyes full of fury and care.
"What the heck were you thinking?! Are you STUPID? Sleeping pills?! I tell you that your family was murdered and you go to KILL YOURSELF? Do you have any idea why I've stuck around for so many years myself?!"
I had no idea where he was going with what he was saying but I was irritated and upset that I had lived. I turned my head to face a blank wall, not wanting to face him.
"Listen to me!"
I ignored him.
"I said LISTEN TO ME!"
He placed his hand under my chin and forcefully turned my head to face him.
"Don't you dare try to kil..."
"WHY DO YOU CARE!"
I couldn't hold it in. I had to ask him. I needed to know.
"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU DAMMIT. Do you have a goddamn reason to live now?!"
There was silence in the room. An eerie silence. It wasn't what I was expecting. He stared into my eyes, angrily, as though he knew what he had just blurted out. My mouth opened slightly to respond but I found myself at a loss of words as I stared up into his eyes. He looked away. I whispered...
"How...?"
He kept quiet for a moment, and then he raised his eyes up to mine again to answer.
"I lied to you. About that night...it didn't happen as I told you."
"Tell me..."
"I fought with Aakash Mehra and Raj Malhotra at the party. I told them who you were. They didn't believe me. I told them I knew they started the fires at my place and yours..."
I instantly caught something.
"Your parents...they..."
"Yes. Not only yours, but mine too. Which is what I'm trying to explain. I wanted to kill myself too. It took everything I had not to. Do you know why I stuck around? Because the killers still live happily, without a worry in their life. I'm alive to get revenge. And I need you to help me."
Revenge...it wasn't a word I was used to. It wasn't a word I thought I'd ever have to associate myself with. Knowing I had taken him off track, I asked him to continue with the party.
"What else happened at the party?"
"Aakash threw a blow at me as Raj took a hold of you. I got angry. I couldn't control myself. I gave him the blow back and helped you. Security broke it up. Then when we got home...I didn't lie that you broke down and opened up to me. But I did lie about Neha. We had got back so late that Neha was already asleep."
"What...what do you mean..."
"I changed your clothes."
My eyes went wide...my heart began to race and the beeping on the heart rate monitor began again. He took a hold of my hand, silently telling me to calm myself, which I did. I looked down at our hands, but he removed his.
"Madhu, you kissed me that night. The minute you pulled away, I wanted you back. I felt alone without you near me. It was then I realized how attached I already felt to you. I didn't want to let you go, so I held you, in my arms, all night. I watched you, as you slept peacefully..."
Nothing seemed like a shock to me anymore...but I did have one question on my mind.
"Then these past days...why were you so..."
"Rude? Because I hate getting attached. Whoever I get attached to, leaves me. And you're in danger. I put you in danger by telling Aakash and Raj about who you are. So I swore to push you away incase I lost you...but when I found your lifeless body laying limp on your bed last night...I couldn't help but let my emotions take control of me. It was then I realized how much I really love you. Yes. I love you Madhu. And I also know that you do not love me. I want you to keep it that way. If something ever happens to me..."
I instantly raised my hand, placing it over his mouth to stop him from continuing. I took a hold of his hand in both of mine and smiled.
"Shh, nothing will happen to you. We'll get through this together. We'll get our revenge. For our families."
"For our families," he repeated.
