I think I am in the correct section of the Forum with this question:

Having not studied the Puranas but have been exposed to various spiritual teachings, my understanding is that possibly over a million years ago there was an edict that came forth from the Heavenly Hierarchy for Earth to destroy the planet because of the deplorable level of existence that was taking place. The Great Lord from Venus, one called Sanat Kumara came forth and said he would descend to the Earth to hold the balance so it would not be destroyed. Supposedly Gautama Buddha was the first one to respond to his call. He eventually descended with the "Seven Holy Kumaras" and the "144,000" who responded to his call to save the earth, some from different star systems, etc. Supposedly Earth is intended to be a Sun for the planet Venus, one reason the existence of Planet Earth is so dear to Sanat Kumara. I have been taught that in the Hindu History and Teachings that Sanat Kumara is referred to as Kartikeya although this Kartikeya doesn't appear to be Kartikeya, the son of Shiva. Any Comments? Thank you.

The Sanat Kumaras (they were four in number) were the mind born sons of Brahma.

They have no connection with Kartikeya, nor has Kartikeya been referred to as Sanat Kumara. May be you have got it mixed up with "Shiva Kumara" which means 'the son of Shiva".

Varaali,

Thank you for finding my post from last week and responding.

This is the Sanat Kumara I am referring to. In this information, it says that this Sanath Kumara was actually the son of Krishna, being Pradyumna. It also references him to Skanda/Kartikkeya.

Sanat Kumara appears as a rishi in the Hindu religious text the Chandogya Upanishad. A shrine to Sanat Kumara which attracts and unites people of all religions and faiths is situated in the town of Katargama, Sir Lanka. In Sanskrit, "Sanat Kumara" is "Eternal Youth" (from Sanat "eternal", and Kumara] a "youth").

The Kumar resides in the most sublime center of our planet, Shamballa, the sahasrara of the world. The Kumara has several names, relating to the sahasrara centers of different Systemic Existences: At the Supra-Cosmic plane, he is called Sanatana; at the Cosmic plane, it is Subrahmanya; at the Solar plane, the Kumara is Sanaka; at the Planetary plane, it is Sanandana; and on this planet, it is Sanath Kumara. So Sanath Kumara is an aspect of Kumara that resides in Shamballa.

Scriptures, especially the Mahabharata, say that it is Sanath Kumara who comes down to help the Divine Plan of Creation, when Lord Krishna came to be. He was born to Lord Krishna as his son, and he was named Pradyumna. Sanath Kumara incarnates himself through the Divine Mother Rukmini as Pradyumna. On completion of his work, He again gets back to his original position and takes to the seat in Shambala as Sanath Kumara. These details are given in the last chapters of Mahabharata. Sanath Kumara is the Planetary Lord. It is said that He receives the energies from higher planes, in the month of Aries, and transmits them to the Spiritual Hierarchy in the month of Taurus.

Sanat Kumara is regarded as the great guru, saviour of Earth. Believers in him see him in all the major religions, as Skanda/Kartikkeya in Hinduism, Brahma-Sanam Kumar in Buddhism, the Ancient of Days in Judeo-Christian traditions, and identify him as Ahura Mazda in Zoroastrianisn. (It is also considered that Sanat Kumara is Al Khdir (green man) known to Sufi Muslims (according to Dakshinamurti.

@ red : The shrine / temple that you are referring to in Kathirgama (or Katargama, as you have written) is indeed dedicated to Kartikeya a. k . a Murugan.

It is believed that it was in this place that Kartikeya plotted his war strategy during his battle with Surapadman, a wicked asura (demon). Kartikeya was supposed to have been in a ferocious mood at that time (naturally, since he was in midst of war preparations) hence there is no actual idol there in the temple.

The rest of the story that you have narrated is most probably a local legend relating to that temple. I am not familiar with it. It has no puranic basis whatsoever. Sri Lankan mythology, though similar to Hindu mythology has been heavily influenced by Buddhism.

Regarding Chandayoga Upanishad (or any Upanishad) for that matter, Sanat Kumaras always appear as rishis. They appeared from the mind of Brahma as four perfect human beings. Right from their advent they were always absorbed in meditation. In appearance, they looked like five year olds, and never aged, though centuries elapsed.

They were fortunate to receive knowledge from Shiva himself (in his Dakshinamoorthy form) and have unlimited access to Vaikunth as well.
