Our domestic help is not exactly the TRP tracking type. But the vibrations of Shah Rukh Khan's phenomenal energy were too powerful to escape anyone.
The new avatar of KBC had just seen the light of day when the kaamwali gave the ultimatum to the lady of the house, "Can't work beyond 8.30 p.m. on KBC days!"
It might sound reasonable on the face of it. But the implications were catastrophic: Who would do the dishes and wind up the kitchen?
When my wife told me about the situation, i got away using my time-tested trick, i.e., selective deafness. Saddled with a heartless, hard-of-hearing-husband, she took the extra burden upon herself.
Nothing seemed to have changed. Not for me at least. Every evening, dinner over, i would bury myself in the cushy couch, made perfectly for well-rounded potatoes like me, and watch the show. I loved it. Not for anything else but for Shah Rukh's amazing energy.
Little did i realise what was in store for me. Soon, comparisons became inevitable. Oh no, not with Amitabh Bachchan but with yours truly.
My wife said, "He is hardly younger than you, but look at the difference in energy". I couldn't guess what she was driving at.
The hint was too subtle to be picked up by my atrophied spousal antenna. To her credit, i must say she is not the type to flog a dead horse. But, that evening, Shah Rukh Khan came to her rescue. As the buzzer sounded the end of the show, he said, "Call from my wife", and started talking to her on his mobile phone.
His next sentence was too loud for anyone to miss: "Yes dear, i am coming. Don't worry, i will do the dishes and the laundry".
That did me in. Now, every evening from Monday to Thursday, i suffer from the symptoms of a new malady. Kitchengunya, i call it. It has no cure.
As they say, one has to learn to live with it. I do like Shah Rukh Khan's show a lot. But i think it's high time someone told him to stop broadcasting his helpfulness-at-home to the world. It has severe repercussions on energy-starved husbands like me.
