Chapter Fourteen - The Darkness
I felt a hand on my shoulder and slowly turned to see the newspaper stand man. He looked up at my face.
"Are you alright?"
I touched my face only to realize that tears had begun to fall from my eyes. I quickly wiped them away and put on a fake smile, thanking him. Unable to find words, I silently handed him the newspaper and nodded my head. He nodded his head in response and then turned to head back to his newspaper stand.
I continued to walk in a trance, lost, not knowing where I was headed. It got dark. I was alone in the street. I couldn't get the news out of my head. I felt like I was losing myself again to the depression that had once nearly killed me from within. I continued to walk until I felt a hand on my shoulder again. In my trance, I hadn't heard any car or footsteps behind me, so cautiously I turned myself to see who it was. I found myself standing face to face with RK. He looked frustrated and angry all at once. But I was no less frustrated and angry than him. Without even a thought, my hand rose and crossed his face. The slap echoed throughout the night as the tears continued to flow from my eyes. He kept his face to the side for a moment, his hand resting where mine had just made contact on his face. Then slowly he rose to face me again. I didn't let the anger leave my eyes as he stared down at me with furious eyes. I wasn't going to let him win this time. I wasn't going to let him scare me.
"How dare you."
He spoke between his clenched teeth, but I didn't fear him at the moment.
"How dare I? HOW DARE YOU RK!"
I yelled at him, pushing on his chest. He stepped back. I lost control. I continued to hit his chest as I questioned his actions.
"How dare you!"
I repeated myself several times until I lost the energy to speak any longer. I clutched to the collars of his shirt as I felt myself wearing down from the long hours I had walked and the emotionally exhausting news I had read. I closed my eyes as the street began to spin around me.
"How dare you..."
I managed to whisper one last time as I fell back, letting the darkness consume me.
I didn't know how much time had passed when my eyes finally began to open. As I opened my eyes, I found myself still in the dark. I rubbed at my eyes, making sure they were open. I blinked several times before I realized that I really was in the dark. Fear...that word does not even come close to describing what I feel in the dark. My heart began to race as I got myself to standing position. I put my hands forwards, only to find a wall in front of me. I turned around and saw a little line of light near the ground. I figured it was the door to what seemed to be a closet. I began banging on it.
"LET ME OUT!"
There was no response. I yelled a few more times until I gave up. I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Then I felt sweat beginning to form on my body, as I feared the darkness. I banged on the door some more when suddenly I heard his voice.
"Have you learned your lesson?"
"RK?!"
"Well of course, I'm certainly not your mother."
The fact that he brought my deceased mother into this angered me, so I kept silent.
"This is what you deserve."
"WHY!"
"No one dares to slap me and you, my maid, did?!"
I kept silent.
"That's what I thought!"
I decided to speak up.
"You deserved that! You jerk! That's all your worthy of!"
The door opened while I leaned against it. I stumbled forward into RK. My hands rested on his chest as I looked up at him. He stared down at me with the same furious eyes from before. He grabbed my arms and brought me to standing position. Holding me tight.
"What did you say? Repeat yourself!"
"You hid the paper from me. I read it RK. I READ IT."
I could've sworn his eyes widened slightly upon hearing that, but he seemed to not want to budge with his expression.
"Who told you, you could run away!"
"YOU. You told me to get lost and so I did! I don't even understand what I ever did to you! Why are you after me?! Why me?! Why did you take me to that stupid party? Why'd you dance with me like that? Why'd you lie about my family's dea..."
"SHUT UP."
He shook me, making me fall silent as tears silently fell from my eyes while I stared up at him.
"Just shut. Up."
I swallowed back my tears and stared up at him. He seemed angrier than I had ever seen him before. And then he spoke.
"I didn't lie."
"Set...ablaze?! That's a LIE."
"Madhu...listen to m..."
"NO! No! I'm done. I can't take this anymore!"
"What are you going to do? Kill yourself?"
I wondered if he had read my mind because at the moment that had seemed like the best option to me. He got his answer with my silence. Slowly his hands slid down from my arms and the look on his face softened.
"There's so much you don't know. Don't be stupid."
"I have no reason to live Mr. Kundra. You gave me no reason to. Yeah, you are the only person I have left. As much as I hate that, it's true. I have no family. I work under you. If you give me no reason to live, then what's the point."
"Why the hell do you need a reason to live?!"
"BECAUSE I DO."
He stared down at me. I looked away, not wanting to face him with tears.
"I need you."
My heart stopped and my breath caught in my throat. I stared down at the ground for a second too long as I wondered if I had heard right. Then I jerked my head in his direction to stare at the expression on his face. It was an unusual expression. One I hadn't seen from him yet. It was almost as though he was pleading me with his eyes.
"What...did you just say...?"
"Don't make me repeat myself. That was difficult enough to say."
"You need...me?"
"Unfortunately, yes."
"Why?"
"I can't explain. Just trust me."
"Trust you?"
I let out a sarcastic laugh and then continued.
"I wouldn't trust you even if my life depended on it."
"Your life does depend on it."
"Sorry?"
"I said I'm not going to explain. Just don't pull any stupid moves from now and don't run away."
"I'll run away if I want to!"
"You have no idea how terrible this world is! What if something happened to you earlier!"
"Why do you care?!"
His mouth opened, as though wanting to say something, but he stopped himself. He looked down at me in frustration and then he glanced to his left.
"Come to my room in ten."
And with that he walked off, leaving me standing there, a mess, wondering what was going on.
