Chapter 8
Riva slowly slept on her mother and Jeevika placed her on the pillow while Viren watched. After covering her, she took the plate from Viren and headed outside the room where he followed her. She placed the plate in the kitchen and then came out.
v - "Its quite late. I think I'll head home now"
j - "Actually I just called for dinner. It should be coming home"
v - "Theres no need for that. I think you should stay inside with her"
j - "Yeah I will, but you've been with us since morning and haven't eaten anything. So just please eat and then you can go."
v - "Uhm okay" he said smiling to her.
Jeevika went sat on the couch and Viren sat near her still maintaining a little bit of a distance. The two sat silently. Jeevika because she had so many things going through her mind right now, and Viren because he barely knew these two people yet he felt so attached to the ten year old girl. He sat there thinking of how Riva just grasped him in the afternoon and hugged him weeping on him continuously. The silence continued until the doorbell rang and Jeevika got up to receive it. She paid for the dinner and then took the food to the kitchen. Viren got up and decided to help her. They took two plates to the table and brought the food. Jeevika started serving Viren first and then the two of them started eating.
j - "Sorry for the not so proper introduction"
v - "That's okay. I'm Viren Vadhera"
j - "Jeevika" she said smiling to him. "So where do you live?"
v - "Three blocks down from here. I actually just moved less than a month ago"
j - "Oh. Thats nice. What do you do?"
v - "I just finished my tax law program at NYU"
j - "Oh so you're a lawyer? Where did you go to law school?"
v - "UCLA"
j - "Thats where I was at" she said looking down.
v - "Wow thats really cool. So you're an alumni from there too"
j - "Yeah I guess I am" she said in a low tone
Viren got the hint that she wasn't too happy talking about their University. He didn't even want to further continue making her feel uncomfortable.
v - "So where do you work?"
j - "At a law firm not to far away from here"
v - "So you've been living here for a while?"
j - "Yeah, just me and Riva. I moved here before her first birthday"
v - "Do you like it here? I mean living in the city"
j - "Not really, but sometimes you have no option but to go against your wishes"
Viren was about to answer when he saw Riva peaking through the door looking at him and Jeevika. She had a blanket wrapped around herself. Viren smiled at her and then Jeevika turned around to see what he was smiling at. She saw Riva awake. Viren got up from his seat and walked to bring Riva over. He picked her up and brought her to the table while Jeevika put some rice in a bowl for her.
v - "Seems like someone is hungry now" he said smiling and sitting on the chair with Riva on his lap.
j - "Good timing. Riva's favorite chinese is here, but she can't eat it as of now"
r - "Why not?"
j - "Because you're still very sick. Just give it a few more days and then I'll take you out"
r - "Please?"
v - "How about just some soup and rice for now"
Jeevika took the spoon and fed Riva while she still sat on Virens lap. It was quiet all around, but certainly something special. Jeevika kept feeding her daughter as she kept holding onto Viren. To Viren and Jeevika's relief, she was finally eating and her fever was better than before. She smiled when Jeevika was done feeding her.
j - "I'll go get you your medicines"
r - "No no... please. I'm sleepy. Look I'm asleep" she said closing her eyes and placing her head on Viren still.
Viren and Jeevika both smiled at each other seeing Riva faking her sleep. Jeevika got up anyways and went inside the room. Riva opened one eye to see if Jeevika was there or not and she didn't see her. Viren however caught her opening her eyes so he fake coughed making Riva look up to him.
v - "She's inside"
r - "Please help me. I don't want to take those disgusting medicines"
v - "Just two more days then you won't have to take them again"
r - "But they're gross"
v - "So is the fever. She's coming" he said to her
Riva closed her eyes again while Jeevika came back to the table.
j - "Open your eyes Riva, I could hear you from inside"
r - "Mom... please"
j - "Think about it twice. You'll be stuck in bed all week then"
v - "I'd go for the medicine" he whispered inside Riva's ear.
r - "Fine just because you said so" she said to Viren.
Riva took the medicine and then closed her mouth and squinted her eyes as she hated the taste of it. Jeevika gave her some water to drink over that which she did. After a minute Viren got up picking her up and taking her to her room.
r - "Why are we going back in there?"
v - "So you can sleep and get some rest"
r - "But I don't want to anymore. I want to sit out here with you guys"
j - "We can sit another day, not now"
v - "I'll come back to check on you tomorrow, deal?"
r - "Deal"
Viren put her back in bed and covered her up like any father would do for his daughter. She closed her eyes and tried sleeping while Jeevika went outside to see Viren off.
j - "Thank you once again for everything today"
v - "Your welcome. Take care"
j - "Goodnight"

 I decided to change the plot to what I had originally planned. Gonna finish this FF within 7-8 more chapters 😊 |
