Chapter Ten
Seeing Maan right there, right before her eyes, took Geet's breath away. He was just as handsome, just as virile as she had remembered -- not that it had technically been that long since she had last seen him, but it certainly *felt* like a lifetime.
"Geet? What are you doing here? Are you all right?" Maan stepped toward her, his brows creased in shock and in concern. She was damp from the rain, and looked weaker since he had last seen her. Still, could any woman be more beautiful than her?
"I'm fine . . . Maan."
At hearing his name without "Sir" attached to it, Maan looked slightly taken aback.
"Pinky had given me the address of the resort before she left," Geet continued, "and so I was driving trying to get there, but there's been a road closure and I was told to come here . . . ."
"So were we," said Maan. He was fighting the urge to find her a towel to help her get dry.
But protecting her wasn't his duty.
Not anymore.
"But . . . why were you coming to the resort?" inquired Maan slowly.
Geet gazed at him for such a long time that Maan thought maybe she didn't hear his question.
"Because you would be there," Geet said finally. Her pride was officially shot, and she cared not a bit. After her discussion with Jaya, her perspective was most certainly starting to change -- on love, on relationships, maybe even on marriage. How could she let the love of her life slip through her fingers?
Maan tried to swallow the lump that had formed in his throat. "Geet . . . ."
Geet wrapped her arms around herself and looked down at the dark carpet flooring. "Because you would be there," she repeated. "And that's where I want to be." She brought her gaze back up to Maan. "With you."
Maan's heart twisted once again at her words. A violent clap of thunder suddenly sounded, shaking the walls. Without thinking, Maan grabbed Geet and pulled her to his chest, cradling her head in his hand.
At feeling Geet's body in his arms after so many days, Maan felt a rush of intensity in his veins. He immediately was taken back to their happy memories together, of fun filled days and romantic evenings by candlelight.
"It's too dangerous for you to have been driving all by yourself and navigating the woods," Maan murmured against her hair. "You know that I don't like you to drive in unfamiliar areas by yourself, and I --" He stopped short and gently released her. He couldn't talk like this. They weren't together anymore.
"Maan?" a female voice sounded from behind them, and Maan turned around to see Zoya approaching them.
"Oh, hi, Geet!" greeted Zoya, waving and looking a bit surprised. "What are you doing here?"
Geet stared at her, stricken. Had Zoya come out of *Maan's* room?
"Uh -- Geet decided to come on the trip after all, and she was re-routed here like us," Maan explained quickly.
"Oh, that's great that you will be on the trip," said Zoya warmly. "Welcome, Geet."
"Thanks," Geet choked out.
"Maan, I put Anjana to bed," said Zoya, yawning. "Gonna head to sleep myself now. See you all in the morning."
"Thanks, Zoya," said Maan, nodding his head appreciatively.
Geet felt as if the broken pieces of her heart were beginning to form even newer cracks. How close had Zoya become to Maan? Weren't they just coworkers?
"Your niece Anjana is here, too?" asked Geet, trying to keep her voice even. She hadn't spent a ton of time with Maan's niece in the past, but did remember the little girl.
"Yeah, I've been babysitting her quite frequently these days because her parents are out of town," Maan answered. "There will be kid friendly things for her at the resort."
"Why, there you are, dear." The old woman in black lace from the lobby came into view from the spiraling staircase, her eyes flashing once again. "I've been looking all over for you."
Geet turned to face her. "Yes, ma'am," she said quietly. "I saw the elevators and just thought I'd come up to my floor myself --"
"You shouldn't do things like that," the woman snapped. "You never know what is lurking behind any corner in this drafty old hotel. You should stay with a person who knows what she is doing. Now, let me lead you to your room." She beckoned Geet closer with one bony finger as the lights above them flickered from the impact of the storm.
Maan saw Geet swallow and begin to tremble. His instinct told him to grab Geet and take him back to his room, to his bed. But how could he do that when they were no longer a couple?
"Goodbye, Maan," Geet said softly, before turning to follow the woman down the dark hall.
Maan reached out his hand and began to call for her, but swallowed his unsaid words. Geet wasn't his anymore.
Fighting every instinct in his body, Maan walked slowly back to his room. The wind whistled eerily outside, and he could only wait to see what would happen next.
