Both of them are missing each other and reliving moments spend together ... But yet not ready to give up on their own egos and fears to go embrace a life that can be completed with only both of their presence...
She is trying to escape reality by "busying" herself and being among people and places that show normality and freedom but fails to see that she is craving for that normality with him... and the freedom of being herself and be in love with him...

He is trying to be someone he can survive to be without her yet he zones out of the places and people around him to escape into a world with him and her in it...

Zoya... seems to be an important and interesting addition to this story...

Loved this part... and do continue soon... 😊

Insecurity is a very difficult problem to handle as it is the result of prolonged experience of unfavorable situation. In geet's case it is due to having been a witness to too many broken marriages and that too to her own mother. It is extremely difficult to overcome. Although both maan and geet were too quick to react, I somehow found maan's reason to break up justifiable. He did give her a long rope. You can only help a person who wants to be helped. Is Ms. Zoya as in Zoya Farroqi. If yes, I may probably like her.

Hi guys -- thank you so much for reading Chapter Seven and for all your likes/comments. It is extremely inspiring.

If you commented on Chapter Seven, I left a reply for you at this link. :) Next chapter is below.

Chapter Eight

Desperate for fresh air, Geet walked quickly through the crowds of museum visitors. The flashback she had had while observing the painting of the sand dune had been too vivid for her liking. When would she stop hearing the rasp of Maan's voice in her ear? When would she stop feeling the contours of his body against hers? When would she able to live one moment without longing for him?

In her haste to exit the museum, Geet nearly knocked over an elderly woman observing a sculpture.

"Oh -- I -- I'm so sorry," Geet stammered. "I didn't -- I didn't mean to, I didn't --"

"It's no problem, dear," the woman said, her face creased with concern. "Are you all right?"

Geet literally felt herself trembling. Would she ever be all right without Maan?

"I'm fine, ma'am," Geet choked out. "I'm fine."

The woman tilted her head to one side. "Are you sure?" she asked doubtfully. "You look rather upset. My name is Jaya. Can I help you with anything?"

And with that, Geet burst into sobs and collapsed onto a bench next to the sculpture. Carefully, Jaya sat down next to her.

"There, there," Jaya said, resting her hand on Geet's shoulder. "You just let it all out."

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Geet took a deep breath and attempted to bring herself under control.

"Please don't apologize, dear," said Jaya. "Is there someone I can call for you? Maybe your husband?"

Geet sniffled. "No, I don't think so, thank you." There was that word again that beat against her conscience daily -- "husband."

"Your parents?"

Geet shook her head. Even if she had wanted to, she had no idea how to contact her father. As for her mother, Geet spoke to her only when necessary. Geet associated her dysfunctional childhood with her mother, and sought to put as much distance between the present and the past as possible.

"Hmm, well, is there anyone else I could call for you? Who are you closest to, dear?"

Geet felt something inside of her shatter. Even though the relationship was over, she still felt closest to -- who else? -- Maan.

Geet swallowed painfully. "He . . . we . . . we are no longer together."

"Ah, I see," said Jaya gently. "Is that why you are so upset?"

Geet stared at the marbled floor and nodded.

"Would it make you feel better if you talked about it?"

Geet looked up at the kind elderly woman. Geet had spent so much time recently without meaningful contact with anyone that she was feeling almost completely disconnected from the world. Although the two had just met, maybe Geet would be able to benefit from a listening ear . . . .

---

"Really, Uncle Maan, Miss Zoya is the bestest!" Anjana cried. "She knows all about dolls and choo-choo trains. You should get eng -- engaged to *her.* We could all play together."

Maan smiled faintly. "Thanks for your input, sweetie," he said, standing and dusting off the front of his pants. "Let's pick out some candy now." Anjana clearly was becoming attached to his top architect, and fast. It was rather adorable that his niece was trying to play matchmaker at such a tender age. If only it were that easy to take the scraps of your heart from one person to the next without thinking twice.

If only.

---

"Oh, dear." Jaya folded Geet's hands into her own after hearing practically the entirety of Geet's life story.

"And I miss Maan so much," Geet continued weakly. "I can't do anything or go anywhere without thinking of him, without needing him still." She let out a long, shuddery sigh. "But I am right, aren't I, ma'am? I saw what my mother went through and I . . . and I . . . ." Fresh tears welled in Geet's eyes as she raised her gaze to Jaya. "Maan would have just left eventually if we got married, ma'am," Geet said, her voice cracking. "He would have left, just like they all do."

Jaya patted the top of Geet's hand. "I can understand your fears considering your past, dear," she said soothingly. "But if no one has ever told you this, let me tell you straight and clear: Your mother's situation was not the norm. I myself have been married to my husband for over forty years. We are still going strong and are proud grandparents."

Geet gave a small smile. She knew of plenty of couples who had shared a long, happy marriage such as Jaya's. But how could she guarantee that she would enjoy that same destiny, especially considering what she had witnessed first-hand in her childhood?

"From what you have told me about this Maan fellow," Jaya continued, "he seems like a dedicated man. He has definitely been harsh and insensitive with you, but I think his anger is stemming from frustration and pure longing to be with you, legally and permanently, and you not reciprocating that feeling."

Geet sniffled, taking in the elderly woman's words.

"It seems like you love each other very much," said Jaya, her voice full of warmth. "I think you both should try to reconcile."

"But . . . what if it doesn't work out?" Geet asked, her voice barely audible. "What if he leaves me and I'm left alone? What if I risk our relationship by taking it to the next level?"

Jaya pulled Geet into an affectionate hug. "It seems to me, dear, that your relationship has already been put at risk by *not* taking it to the next level."

---

Maan focused on the dark road ahead of him as he drove. The group had taken quite a long break at the rest stop, and had also hit nasty snarl of traffic. They were at least two hours behind schedule in reaching the resort. In order to give Adi a break from driving, Maan had gotten behind the wheel. Night had fallen, and the only other person awake was Zoya, who was now sitting in the seat behind Maan.

"You okay up there?" asked Zoya. "Do you need any coffee or anything?"

Maan's eyes flitted to the rearview mirror to focus on her. After leaving the candy shop, where Anjana had "suggested" that Maan marry Zoya, he couldn't help but see Zoya in a new light. Maan had never before thought of her as anything but an exceptionally talented professional. In fact, Maan had barely even acknowledged Zoya's gender most of the time, regarding her like a male colleague. She was obviously gorgeous, as all of Khurana Construction knew, but even now Maan associated beauty with Geet.

"I'm fine," said Maan. "Thanks. You should get some sleep."

"Nah, gotta make sure *you* don't doze off." Zoya grinned.

"Don't worry. I'm careful."

"Just being cautious."

Maan smirked. "I didn't even know you were coming on this trip, by the way."

"Surprised to see me out of the office?" Zoya asked, taking a swig of coffee.

"Something like that."

"Well, I'm glad Pinky and Adi invited me. All work and no play makes Zoya a dull girl." She settled back further into the seat.

"True," said Maan, nodding. "By the way, thanks for being so great with Anjana. She's not bothering you, is she?"

"Not at all," said Zoya, waving her hand. "She's adorable. I love kids."

Maan raised an eyebrow. "Is that right?"

"Yup." Zoya seemed to hesitate before continuing. "If you want to know a secret, one of my biggest 'goals,' I guess you could say, is to have a family. Sounds way too old-fashioned, right?"

"A little surprising coming from a modern professional woman, I guess," said Maan. He eased on the breaks as the road twisted slightly into a wooded area

"Yeah. It's true, though. Looking forward to settling down one day. Quite a bit, actually." Zoya gazed out of the window, a small, wistful smile on her lips.

Maan's eyes rested on Zoya in the mirror for a moment too long before redirecting his attention back to the road.
