Hi guys, thank you so much for reading, commenting, and pressing like. So motivational! Next chapter is below. :)

Chapter 7

Geet pulled her thin shawl tightly around her as she wandered the exhibits of an upscale art museum. The gallery, with its high-vaulted ceilings and rich cream-colored walls, housed elaborate sculptures and classic art pieces. Although Geet was attempting to focus on the beauty of the artwork, her mind continually flitted to Maan. It was no help that couples swarmed around her, hand-in-hand and heads bent low together as they discussed the various showpieces. Her only human contact that evening had been when the director of the art gallery had escorted her inside.

*Why did I even come here?* Geet thought gloomily. But she knew why, of course: To distract herself from memories of Maan, from the breakup, from the constant dull ache of heartbreak. Geet had been to nearly every recreational spot in town by now -- bookstores, movie theaters, poetry readings, and, now, an art museum. The only problem was that she always went alone. The loneliness was absolutely doing a number on her.

For a second, Geet almost wished she had accepted Pinky and Adi's invitation to the engagement celebration getaway they had finally been able to arrange. Geet had steadfastly refused in the name of being "too busy." In reality, she knew Maan might go, and she couldn't bear to see him. Perhaps Adi and Pinky suspected as much, and hadn't pressured her to come.

Geet stopped short in front of one painting of a sand dune. The gritty sand and night sky was captured to perfection in the strokes of artistry. She closed her eyes and transported herself back to a night on the beach with Maan. They had spread a blanket over the soft, warm sand, laughing and feeding each other cheese and strawberries. Maan had seated Geet with her back to his chest as they gazed at waves crashing against the shore. "Look up at the stars, Maan Sir," Geet had urged. "So beautiful!" Maan had pressed a kiss to her temple. "They shine for you, Geet," he had murmured.

Geet's eyes flew open as the chatter from the museum visitors once again flooded her ears and she found herself facing the painting, alone. She abruptly turned away, hoping no one could see her tears.

---

"Can we do a quick head count?" said Adi, standing in front of his large house early Saturday morning. "Pinky, check. Maan and Anjana, check. Michael, check. Zoya . . .?" He craned his neck around. "Hmm. She should be here in a few. You guys can throw your luggage in the back of the car now, though. I'll be driving."

Maan looked down at Anjana, who was clutching her stuffed panda bear, "Pandy," and jumping up and down. "You excited to have fun, baby?"

Anjana looked up and grinned. "Uh-huh!"

Maan ruffled her hair and began hoisting their suitcases into the trunk. When Adi had invited Maan to the mini-vacation in honor of Adi and Pinky's engagement, Maan had balked. How could he go on a trip with Geet in attendance when they were no longer together? Plus, he remained responsible for Anjana, whose parents were still out of town. Adi had only shrugged off these concerns. "Geet isn't coming," he had informed. "Pinky and I tried to convince her, but she said that -- uh, she said that she was too busy." Maan had raised his eyebrows. He knew that Geet had *really* refused to attend because she had anticipated that Maan would come along. Not unlike his own hesitation, clearly.

"Plus, you can bring Anjana, too," Adi had continued. "We're going to one of those resorts that's within driving distance. There will be amusement park rides and mini-golf and stuff like that for her." Maan had spent the whole evening thinking about Adi's proposal. It would be good to get out of the area for a bit, to escape from his thoughts of Geet for a while. Plus, he knew Anjana would have fun. Eventually, he had accepted the invitation.

"I'm here, I'm here!" a female voice called. Maan whipped around to see Zoya, who was dashing up the sidewalk with her rolling suitcase. She was wearing a pale green skirt and bright shirt -- quite unlike the more formal outfits she wore to work.

"Miss Zoya!" cried Anjana, waving.

"Hi, sweetie!" greeted Zoya. "Did you like the books your uncle bought you the other day?"

Anjana nodded. "Yup! One was about a *choo-choo* train!"

"Is that right?" said Zoya. "I think I know that one, and it's my favorite." She winked at Anjana and rose to greet Maan.

"Now that Zoya's here, let's all pile in," said Adi, waving toward his large vehicle. The group climbed in, with Zoya and Anjana sitting in the very back seats as Anjana acted out tales with Pandy.

Maan leaned his head against the window as conversation filled the space and scenery flew by. He thought back to Geet's prediction of the trip, how they would have been able to spend some quality time together. How much she had been looking forward to coming. . . .

Maan thought back to their past vacations. One had been to a vineyard on the lush countryside with another group of friends, and, despite his instructions, Geet had downed at least two glasses of wine. "I'm really sorry, Maan Sir," Geet had said, clearly saddened at his look of disappointment. "You know I always give you want you want, Geet," he had said, pushing an errant strand of hair behind her ear. "If I tell you no, then it's for a good reason. You're too delicate to partake in drinking. Don't do it again. Understand?" And she had nodded, eager to be back in his good graces. And Geet hadn't tasted alcohol again until Adi and Pinky's engagement party, when she had --

Maan shut his eyes. No need to rehash *that* memory.

---

An hour or so after being cooped up in the vehicle, the group stopped at a rest stop. Anjana, of course, had been the first to spot a candy store inside.

"Be right back, guys," Maan had called over his shoulder, taking Anjana by the hand and leading her to the sweet shop.

"What kind of candy do you want, baby?" said Maan, reaching inside his pocket for his wallet. But Anjana appeared lost in thought, and she beckoned her uncle to stoop down.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?" asked Maan, now at eye level with her.

"Uncle Maan, Miss Zoya said Mr. Adi and Miss Pinky are eng -- enga -- *engaged,*" she said. "What does *that* mean?"

Maan gave his niece a watery smile as visions of Geet floated into his head. "It means that Miss Pinky and Mr. Adi are getting married, so that Miss Pinky will be Mr. Adi's wife, and . . . ." His voice trailed off. He could almost feel Geet's presence next to him. "And that he will love her and take care of her and protect her."

"Ohhh."

"Now, what kind of candy --"

"Uncle Maan, who is *your* wife?"

Maan cleared his throat. The memories of Geet came faster, of her laughing, of her sleeping in his arms.

Of her tear-stricken face in their last confrontations.

"I . . . don't have one," he said finally, and began to rise.

But Anjana stopped him and placed her tiny hands on Maan's cheeks. "But Uncle Maan, I know who can be your wife!" she said excitedly.

Maan chuckled absentmindedly, trying mightily to shake Geet from his mind. "Is that right that? Who?"

"Miss Zoya."
