The govt. has approved schemes to redevelop Mumbai slums. Under this project Mumbai slums will be replaced with towers. Although the police says they have complaints against builders who have made huge amounts of payments to govt. officials and experts are saying the slum rehab scheme should be changed, the govt. has not entertained any complaint against the scheme and denied police request for criminal investigation against the builders.

Here are some facts:

1) There are 4 million slum dwellers in Mumbai

2) Most of the terrorist or underworld activities start from slums.

3) The slum developers are inflating the no. of slum dwellers with fake names to build more flats. This is in full knowledge of the govt.

4) The amount of estimated profit that the slum developers will make by rehousing 4 million slum dwellers is INR 33,000,000,000,000 or approximately USD 733.5 billion.

5) Many of the slum dwellers are replaced without being given proper documents and with no knowledge where they will be ultimately given a room.

So, what do you think is more necessary. To get rid of slums and slum dwellers whatever the cost maybe or to stop the builders and the govt. from carrying on this project and letting the slums to thrive with all the disadvantages that it brings to the city??

Very Nice Topic 👏

I understand slums are not good but they have been there for ages and eliminating slums in few areas won't be long term solution as new colonies will form soon. Govt should come up with some workable / robust / long term solutions.BTW - underworld activities is a plague won't cease even after slums are eliminated.

Rehab in a non corrupted environment would have been something to vote for, but here I don't know, it sounds more like a money earning scheme of Builder + Govt, at this point am not even sure whether govt. will fulfill what is promised to this very low income group of people.Really want slums to be converted in sky scapers but after hearing Govt + Builder, somehow don't have a good feeling about it

Thanxxx Raj.

I know everyone would like to see the slums to be converted into sky scrapers, that's why I gave a balanced list of facts to encourage people to think both sides of the story before taking their stand.

I won't give my views now maybe later. 😊

I agreed with snup... 👏

If this practice of giving free housing to slum dwellers is followed then after these set of slum dwellers are provided with housing then next set of people with come and set up slums all over mumbai and then after some years govt need to provide them with the housing to free Mumbai of slums and this will go on.... People who strive hard in life to achieve a living and in the process to buy a house in Mumbai cannot afford to because of high prices and higher interest on loans day by day... [In the budget, excise on cement has been increased so now the prices will still go up...] but these slum dwellers they get free of cost housing... Why? just cos they are staying on the footpaths for decades and govt want to free Mumbai of its slums...

In many cases even after slum dwellers are provided housing.. these people give out those flats on rent and go back to the foothpaths cos they are kind of use to that life and more importantly they get money for renting the flats out ...

Souro, I was hoping to copy your thoughts and say nice post, I agree, but you still haven't posted.. well.. I will retain the rights to change my opinion & hence the post later on😉

I like what Raj said. It is a problem neither GOVT nor builders should take lightly. Promise of skyscrapers to slum dwellers can also mean promise of lavish flats to slum dwellers who have several million dollars in swiss banks and slum-life is just a pretence. The skycraper promise can also mean upliftment of some of the dwellers from one slum to another.

Such projects are ambitious and seemingly progressive. Yet, without a CLEAR PLAN and LAW-ENFORCED ACTION on it, no one will be benefitted except those who have underlying secret interests in eradicating slums to replace them by buildings. UNHAPPY POLICE FORCE is not the right beginning to start such projects.

Although newbie sunp has pointed out that OBL did not grow up in slum, a WELL-KNOWN FACT is that MUMBAI SLUMS harbor plenty of Mumbai's underworld.

IMO, they can also get the slum-dwellers' hands together to build smaller cleaner yet comfortable housing, which need not be skyscrapers for that matter, but soemthing like a CHAWL. Slum dwellers can come together and pitch in help in terms of labor while BUILDERS can fund the project and GOVT / LAW ENFORCEMENT can be MORE INVOLVED.

I think its good to get rid of slums once and for all..without being too judgemental about the inhabitants. Slums basically give rise to crime which is veri difficult to track and bust..it also gives the slum-dwellers an excuse to be a part of the crime world...

I agree. As a part of development Govt should take tough decisions!! Policy makers should'nt be emotional!!

The problem with the slums is politicians don't support neither the government officials in removing slums nor do they help the swell dwellers for their inhabitation!!
