Chapter 7
We are in this together -
"Damn! Why was she not answering his calls and messages?" Asad was sure that Zoya was still in Bhopal and he wanted to talk to her before she went back to Mumbai. Or was he wrong? Had she gone back to her old life already? He wanted to know who had inherited the mansion and had to get the information out of her. "Is it the only reason you want to meet her?", his heart asked him. He shrugged the thought feeling little restless inside.
When he never showed up at the NIkaah, Asad had no idea what had happened. Zoya must have been shattered and her father must have explained the reason he had done the whole sham in the first instance.
Gaffur Siddiqui had been such a greedy man that he had been ready to compromise the happiness of his own child for his own profit. Not that Zoya had known about that. About the deal they had made on their first meeting. At first, Asad had not been sure about what kind of welcome he would be getting in the family. So he had to take the chance to meet the man to see if the plan would go through.
It had been a chance he had been forced to take because the nikaah would not have taken place without meeting the father anyway. And he did not have the option to hide his identity, he was a renowned businessman and Siddiqui was no fool.
However, when the man had caught his name and had sent Zoya away, he had been sure that his plan was going to go through. And he had struck a deal with the devil himself. And so Asad had been ready to give him twenty percent of his Dilshaad Enterprizes shares in return of his silence about their nastily linked past to his daughter. And he would have supposedly be getting the Sheikh Mansion as his wedding gift.
Even now, he derided himself for the fool he had been to have believed in a man like Siddiqui. He, of all people should have known about his treacherous nature. When Zoya had refused to talk about her family, he had done a full research on their pasts. It was beyond belief what Gaffur Siddiqui had done.
Three legal marriages and Allah only knew how many mistresses he'd had but Asad knew from the report of the private investigator that Razia had been Siddiqui's mistress ever since the beginning. He'd known Razia long before that and when they had finally married, Dilshaad had been heart-broken. She must have believed that Gaffur would marry her instead because she had been asking for divorce from Rashid ahmed Khan.
Asad sighed. Would he never let go of the past? Was it always going to haunt him for the rest of his life? Where the hell was Zoya anyway? He was waiting for her in his car outside the Siddiqui Mansion but she was nowhere to be seen.
Suddenly, Asad remembered a place Zoya had shown him when he had come over to visit. It had been her favourite place, she had told him. The place she went to whenever she'd felt lonely and sad. Or whenever she had missed her mother.
Zoya had never talked about her. Asad did not even know who she had been. When he had heard about Siddiqui's Death, he had come out to Bhopal to look for Zoya but had learnt from Mr. Mirza that she no longer lived here. She had moved to Mumbai.
That had surprised him. The Zoya he had known had never loved the fast life of Mumbai. She had always hated the idea of going far from her family. For a long time, that is.
"There you are!" he said sharply seeing her sitting on a bench at the end of her garden. It was a hidden corner not seen from the house and was very private.
She jumped and turned round. "Damn Asad! You scared me. And what you are doing here???"
Asad watched as she put a hand over her heart trying to still her heartbeats most probably. She was not looking like the model he had seen a day ago. She was looking forlorn and sad.
"You have been crying," he stated the obvious, ignoring her question. She was mourning her father after all. She had just been hiding it so well that had him fooled all the way. What an actress, she truly was the daughter of her father!
She turned her back to him and shrugged, a habit she had when she had something going on but did not want to talk about it.
"I askded you, What are you here for?" she asked him in a weary tone.
He sat down beside her, not close but close enough to feel the tension that was emanating from her. "I want what's rightfully mine. I want my property back," he delivered without preamble and heard her swift intake of breath. As if she had been waiting for him to say that.
"H...How do you know I got it?" she asked not looking at him, staring right ahead in empty space as if trying to figure something out. So, she knew about the whole story then. Good, it was going to be easier to deal with her since they were on the same frequency.
"I don't," he replied back. "Even if your Tanveer has it, I still want it back."
She smiled ruefully and said what he had been dreading to hear. "Well, I don't have it."
He said nothing for a long time. The silence stretched between them, both busy in their own thoughts not knowing what to say or do.
Finally, Asad suppressed his disappointment and admitted to himself that he had been wanting Zoya to inherit his property. Even if it would have been more difficult to get it from her, he would have preferred her to that mad half-sister of hers.
But he was left with no choice. Everything was over between them. It sounded so final that his heart refused to accept that information.
"So you know..." he finally asked her staring at her averted face and asking so many questions in that single sentence.
Zoya still looked straight ahead, not meeting him in the eyes and did not reply him. She was quiet for so long that Asad feared she might never answer when finally, she answered.
"Uncle Feroz told me everything this morning ."
Damn! She was good. Nobody would know she was lying right through her teeth right now. There was no way that she had not known the truth after all this time. Surely, Gaffur must have made some excuses about his behaviour but she must have gotten some kind of information from her father. Because the last time, Asad had been to the house was the time when he had a fight with Siddiqui over his increasing greediness. He had wanted to take over Dilshaad Enterprize as well not satisfied with the twenty percent he had agreed to at the beginning.
The bas***d had waited till one week before the wedding before starting to bargain that twenty percent was not going to make him the biggest shareholder. As if he did not have enough money. But greed was almost a vice, wasn't it? Asad could not trust Siddiqui now. Even if Asad gave him more shares, he wasn't even sure to be getting a fair deal. Then Asad had decided then to walk out of Siddiqui but not before telling him that the nikaah was not happening.
So, Asad had stomped out of the study furious and had found Zoya nowhere in sight to call off the NIkaah.
"Right," Asad scorned with as much cold in his voice as the ice on an iceberg.
"You don't believe me," Zoya stated in a dead voice as if she no longer cared.
AAK - "Damn right I don't. Didn't ABBU tell you why I called off the Nikaah?
Zoya - "No"
He snorted. "Really? She was playing him for a fool now", he thought.
"Never mind that," she said still in her calm voice even if Asad was damn sure she was in a turmoil right beside him. He could feel it by the rigidness of her stance, the clenching of her jaws and she was still averting her eyes.
AAK - "Yeah, there's no need to dig up the past. It's all water under the bridge now. Then your father had left me with no choice then Zoya."
He expected her to ask what he was going to do next but she didn't. And he wasn't going to tell her anyway.
"I am going to marry Tanveer to get back my due," he uttered despite himself but was glad he sounded firm and assertive.
Then for the first time since they had been talking, Zoya looked at him. Properly. She scrutinized his face searching for something. Asad returned her look right back looking at her closely too for the first time. She appeared tired and her eyes were swollen. Her face was still set and she looked so pensive that he wished he could read her thoughts right now. What was going on in her head?
Zoya - "You are ready to marry Tanveer only to get back your property?"
Asad nodded confidently except he wasn't sure he would go with the plan anyway. But he couldn't let on that insecurity to her. She wouldn't understand anyway. She looked away again. At that moment, he wondered how much she knew about his past, about his mother. She knew about the affair and the scam. Did she know that his mother, Dilshaad, had killed herself at the age of forty-two only? Did she know that her father had made Dilshaad's life so miserable near the end that she had been forced to live in a shabby apartment?
Somehow Asad doubted that.
Zoya - "Well, luckily for her, she doesn't have the property too."
Asad was beyond shocked. What the hell was that all about now? Who the hell had inherited his ancestor's mansion? Zoya was lying to him again and fooling around with him.
"What are you playing at Zoya?" he shouted angrily. "Don't lie to me. Your father must have given the property to one of his daughters. Or are you telling me that he does not have it anymore. Is that it?"
Zoya shook her head. "He has given it to one of his daughters. Except it's not me or Tanveer."
"But you don't have any other half-sister!" Asad exclaimed outrageously, frustrated that Zoya wasn't telling him the whole story.
Zoya - "I do. I never knew about her till this morning."
Asad closed his eyes in complete frustration. Was he never going to accomplish what he had wanted so long ago? Was it so difficult to get back what was rightfully his? Why was Allah making it so hard for him to achieve something he was entitled to?
Was Zoya telling the truth? Could he trust Zoya? She had never lied to him in the past and Asad had no reason not to trust her. Zoya had always been a very honest person when Asad had known her.
Asad swallowed hard and cleared his throat.
AAK - "Tell me everything Zoya, I mean EVERYTHING, please."
Which Zoya did. Asad was stunned to hear that Gaffur Siddiqui had another daughter out of the wedlock. He had always been sure that there had been only two daughters in the picture but had never doubted that there was another child of the man out there.
Zoya did not know much, only that her father had a mistress named Sheerin Qureshi while he had been married to Abida. Which meant that the other half-sister would be of exactly the same age as Zoya. The woman had never informed of her pregnancy having found out the truth about her lover within a few months of their courting. Whether he had stolen her property, they did not because there was no trace of that.
And nobody knew anything about Humaira Qureshi except her name.
"Damn! Damn! Damn! Why was it getting more complicated now?" Just when Asad had thought himself so close to his goal.
"What now?", Asad asked himself the question and at the same time Zoya voiced it out.
Asad sighed. He had to make a decision. Either he let it go or he would have to go after that other half-sister. But even as Asad was thinking, he knew if he let it go now, he would never be able to make peace with himself. Something he really needed to do to be able to move on.
He laughed mirthlessly. "Well, stick to the initial plan. I find her and marry her."
Zoya looked at him again less intensely this time, as if she had been expecting that.
She nodded briskly and said in matching tone. "Okay I'll help you find her."
Asad did a double take. He had been expecting arguments from her side, even persuasion that it was not a good idea. He had also been prepared to hear her deter him from his plan. Hell, he had even rehearsed in his head what he was going to tell her in that case.
Never in his wildest dreams had he thought that Zoya would offer him her help. Especially to him. After all he had done to her. After all she had been through because of him. After all the pain and heartbreak he had caused her.
"Why the hell would you be doing something like that for me, Zoya?" he asked despite himself wanting her to admit that she was ready to help him out of her good heart. Why else would she help him find someone else? Someone he had told he intended to marry.
So she didn't love him anymore. Because the Zoya he knew would never have agreed to such a thing. Instead of feeling thrilled, he felt depressed. He should be feeling happy that she had gotten over him, shouldn't he? Well, he had gotten over her too so it was fair that she had moved on as well. Not that he had loved her those years back; but he had been lusting after her like some hormonal teenager. And lust was harder to get over than love wasn't it?
"Oh, it wouldn't be for you," was Zoya's casual remark.
"Let me rephrase then. Why the hell would you be doing something like that?"
Zoya - "Don't bother about the why. You got yourself an partner. Come now. Let's not waste time."
Zoya got up walking towards the house without looking back to see if Asad was following her or not. Asad was too stunned to move for the first few seconds. Then, he got a grip of himself and galloped towards her.
"Where are we going?" Asad asked Zoya when he reached right behind her.
Zoya - "In my father's study."
Asad - "Zoya, stop! This will never work. We both hate each other and I don't know how we are going to be able to liaise together. This is such a stupid idea. The most stupid idea you've gotten since that time when you..."
"Let's not go in the past, Mr. Khan," Zoya stopped him cutting short and stopped walking suddenly. He was unprepared for that and bumped into her with such force that she lost her balance. He caught her before she could fall to the ground, pulling her close to him. Closer than he was supposed to.
She looked PERFECT... She felt PERFECT... Close to him... in his arms... with her face just inches away from his. Asad could not name the emotion right now but only thing he wanted to do was to hold her even closer and get lost in those brown eyes. Asad knew marrying Zoya's Half Sister is going to be one hell of a task with Zoya accompanying him to find her...
Almost immediately after getting her footing back, Zoya stepped aside, looking at a point behind him, still not meeting his eyes. She must be feeling the attraction between them; it was too flagrant to ignore. It had always been like that between them, fiery and instantaneous.
Asad remembered back in the days they had been dating, he'd wanted her with a longing he'd never experienced for any woman before. He wanted her completely... mind BODY and soul...
Zoya had been wanting to wait till the wedding assuring him that she was a virgin, not that he'd believed her but Asad had played along. But there had been an aura of innocence around Zoya three years ago. She had seemed pristine to him from time to time which had made Asad doubt what he had been prepared to do.
But virgin or not, Zoya had been attracted to Asad as much as he had been to her. He had felt it during all their kisses they had and during one night they had nearly lost control. There was never the question of the chemistry between them, the main reason why he had been able to put off this whole sham in the first place.
And it was still here, lying dormant between them but ready to explode at any time. He was sure about that. Asad feared that if he stayed in her company much longer, he wouldn't be able to resist her. Or Zoya might be the one giving in to the temptation.
Why the hell was Zoya agreeing to his marriage to someone else then?
