write up:

Every time Felicia Day gets invited
back to The CW's Supernatural we
just get more jealous of her. Not only
did she get to hack Leviathan
computers and get Dean ( Jensen
Ackles ) to cosplay, but she also
traveled inside a video game, and
now she gets to hang out with
characters from The Wizard of Oz
come to life!
Supernatural loves their gates, and
on "Slumber Party," the boys learn
that there is a gate that leads to Oz
and the Wicked Witch (guest star
Maya Massar) is determined to find
the key that would open those gates
and connect the two worlds. Because
the boys stumble on this information
while attempting to move a giant
computer in the Men of Letters
bunker, they have to call upon Charlie
(Day) for some technical help with a
slightly more magical version of the
world wide web.
"Charlie is obviously a fangirl, so I
think she's a little blown away,
naturally, to have something that
she's a fan of come to life," Day said
to LA TV Insider Examiner about her
character's reaction to learning that
The Wizard of Oz -- and all of the
characters within are real.
"Dorothy is a really cool character.
She's from the past, and she's and
independent spirited person who is
dropped into this world not knowing
a lot of things. She's from the 30s,
and there's an interesting dynamic
there that she kind of reminds you of
Amelia Earhart-- at least that's what
I got from it. It's a really cool
stylistic choice to have that sort of
vibe with that really cool screwball
woman character embodying Dorothy
in a way. I think it's a really fresh
take on it."
Charlie has been involved with
somewhat fantastical elements ever
since meeting the boys a few years
ago, so the shock she feels here may
be less about the characters she is
encountering and more about the
setting. For the first time, the boys
have a real home base, and they not
only invite Charlie into it but are
relying on her to help them save it
as the Wicked Witch's plans would
pretty much destroy the Men of
Letters bunker.
"The Men of Letters bunker is an
amazing space and when you enter it
as a person on the set or a viewer,
it's awe-inspiring, really. It really
sets a tone for something epic to
happen in it and with the people
involved. It's definitely an upgrade! I
think Charlie's really happy for them
to have this central hub and flattered
and honored to be invited to work
with them in it," Day said.
"Slumber Party" is a "lighter" kind of
one-off episode, per Day, and
because of this, Charlie and the boys
are really focused on the task at
hand, rather than some of the larger,
already overarching themes of the
season. That is not to say the danger
that the Wicked Witch represents
could not be catastrophic-- her plans
for the gates of Oz would mean
destruction not only of the bunker
but also potential casualties as new
characters could cross between
worlds, for example. But it's a reveal
that is all-encompassing but
relatively containable once the
boys-- and Charlie!-- get a handle
on the situation. And it's a reveal
that is a distraction from some of the
boys' greater problems, such as
casting Castiel ( Misha Collins ) out or
the fact that Ezekiel is still healing
Sam ( Jared Padalecki ) without Sam's
knowledge, let alone consent.
Day admitted that what is going on
with Sam is not at the forefront of
this episode, but because Charlie
knows the boys so well, Day did
think she was able to "sense
something" was off about Sam,
especially because Charlie is
spending more time with him in this
episode than before.
"The cool part about this episode I
think is that Charlie gets to have a
moment with each of the guys. [She]
and Sam have not really had as close
a relationship, so it's kind of nice to
see that she's fully integrated in a
way in their lives and so comfortable.
They've been through so much
together, so there are some nice
scenes between her and Sam, and
her and Dean," Day said.
"These are really the first people in
existence that she's confided in and
who really know her for who she is
and not just who she says she is or
pretends to be, so that dynamic to be
really open and feel like she belongs
is sort of unique for her, and that's
what, I think, sort of encourages her
to latch onto becoming a hunter and
proving that she's part of the team
and that she earned her place and
earned the guys' confidence. I think
she takes that really seriously, and
there may be a sense that she's
looking for something deeper as she
goes through her journey with those
guys, but at the end of the day, there
are some really nice moments and
surprises and emotional twists...
Look for some surprises, especially
at the end!"
Supernatural airs on The CW on
Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. "Slumber
Party" airs on October 29 2013.
