HIS UNBREAKABLE VOW
Geet sat admiring the interiors of the airport as Maan prepared their departure, instructing the crew for the necessary. Though, she was scared of traveling in air somehow Maan's presence comforted her. The question that bothered her was, could she hold herself together if those memories haunted her, the memories of her past which changed her life. Her thoughts broke as Maan called out to her.
Geet, let's go.! Our flight is ready. He informed her, while the crew handled their remaining luggage. Hearing his words Geet got confused what he meant by our flight.
Our flight.? She asked him. He smiled and took her hand leading towards their gate.
Geet, I am Maan Singh Khurana, I travel in my own private jet. He said proudly, smiling at her. A small smile formed on her face hearing him. She followed him, as he dragged her along the corridors to the gate, admiring the interiors all along. She had been to the airport only in her childhood and a lot had changed everywhere since that time. She stared at the flight in front of her. It came as a shock to her that Maan could owe such a huge flight, she knew he was rich but didn't expect him to be this rich. The flight wasn't huge but wasn't small either. It had the symbol of KC imprinted on its sides, giving it a classy look. As she stood there looking around, she noticed Maan wasn't by her side but was in conversation with someone who looked like a crew member. A few minutes later, she saw Maan walking back towards her.
Let's go Geet, everything is ready. He said, walking back as she followed him.
Maan.? She called out stopping him. As he turned around, he saw her worried face, the one he saw last night. Something about her face made him wonder was there something serious about her fears or was it just random fears.? He took a few steps back reaching her.
What happened Geet, there's nothing to be scared about.! He assured her, as she looked on him worried.
I...just wanted to know how long..It might take.? She asked hesitantly.
Ohh.! It will take a few hours. He replied. Her face grew tense as she heard the words. Soon she masked her face and nodded, trying to behave calm yet Maan could see the fear on her face.
Geet are you okay.? We don't have to go if you are so scared; we can go somewhere where we won't have to travel by flights. You look really scared. Please tell me.! He said, extending a hand to hold her. The words didn't help her, but she didn't want to ruin this. May be this was the way she could throw out her fears; she never tried confronting her fears.
No.! I want to, I can't keep losing from my fears always. Please don't worry about me, I am fine. She assured him.
Okay, but if there is anything that bothers you tell me immediately. Don't hesitate. Am I clear.? He almost ordered her in a stern voice. She giggled hearing him ordering her, like her teacher. For some reason, she couldn't control her laughter when he ordered her around like this. Yet his concern for her made her happy deep down. Maan watched her confused, as to what made her laugh so suddenly.
Geet.? What's funny.? I asked you something, am I clear.? He asked her again, making her zip up her laughter. She nodded and walked ahead. For mere seconds, she forgot that the flight waited for her. As she approached the aircraft, her fear crept up again. She stopped a few steps away from the stairs leading inside. Maan, who was right on her heels bumped into her from behind unaware of her sudden stop.
You were just laughing 2 minutes ago, what happened now.? Geet, believe me it's not that scary as you think. Let's go. He said calmly, holding his hand out. Hesitating, she put her hand in his and he tried to lead her but she was a bit stiff not letting either of them move forward. He looked back at her and to his astonishment he found her eyes closed. He chuckled lightly, seeing her praying to her favourite Babaji. Finding no other option, he scooped her up in his arms without a word. She snapped her eyes open, losing the ground.
Maan, please let me down. I am coming, I am not backing away. I was just praying. She defended her self.
I didn't say anything. But we are getting late. We can't keep waiting here. So you do your prayers, I'll take you upstairs. Who knows how long you will take for this. He shook his head, while she pouted hearing his complaining voice. He started covering the distance.
Fine, put me down. I will come without wasting a second. Please, it's embarrassing. She pleaded as she saw the crew behind them watching them amusingly. Her plea went unheard as he continued walking, not even sparing her a glance. Just as they entered the aircraft, the few members who were the only crew started clapping. Maan looked at them in confusion but Geet knew exactly why they were clapping. She nudged Maan to put her down that's when it hit him what Geet was hinting. He put Geet down and walked out of the aircraft ready to give the rest of the instructions. Geet looked around herself and found the flight to be quite an impressive thing; it had some individual seats to as well as couch for resting. She walked around admiring Maan's taste and class. He was simply unmatchable. She blushed at herself, proud to be a part of his life; his wife. She settled herself on the couch waiting for him to return. A few minutes later he returned with a man following him. He spotted her sitting on the couch looking around; tensed again.
Geet, sit on the seat till the takeoff, then you can sit on the couch. He pointed towards the seats. She quietly settled in the seats and tried putting on the seat belt but her hands were shaky. Seeing her struggling, Maan came forward, taking the belts from her shaky hands and secured it tightly around her. She was about to ask him to sit next to her but to her amazement she didn't have to as he was already fastening the belt around himself. A smile stretched up her face, moved by his concern.
Thank you. She spoke unknowingly, grabbing his attention.
Why.?
For being so patient with me. I can't help much, with the fear. She confessed to him. He smiled his charming smile and her heart fluttered a bit. She looked away trying to calm herself down.
Close your eyes and sit back. It will make it easier. He told her he could see her hand tightly grabbing the arm rest. She obeyed him and leaned her head on the back of the seat closing her eyes. Just as she feared, soon the memories from her painful past came along making her shut those even more tightly to shove the thoughts away. Maan noticed her struggling with something and wondered what could possibly torture her so much . He held her hand tightly assuring it was all fine. Soon the flight stared moving but Geet showed no movement staying still to avoid her eyes clouding up. She could feel the movements of the flight but decided to concentrate on everything apart from that dreadful day. As they were airborne, Maan loosened his grip on her hand once it was over.
Geet, it's over. You can open your eyes. Go and take rest inside. He said, touching her shoulder. Feeling his touch, Geet opened her eyes and saw him staring at her with questions. It bothered her that although he had questions, then what stopped him from asking her. Deep inside her heart, she wanted to pour out her pain in front of him, to share it with him. She nodded in agreement and unfastened her belt to leave. She was about to leave when Maan held her hand stopping her. She turned around to meet his tormented face again.
Geet, I don't want to make it worse for you but what happened that made you so vulnerable when it comes to aircrafts.? I can see it's not just fear but something beyond that. Am I right.? He asked her with a concerned expression. Her silence said it all, though her troubled face stopped him from asking anything further.
It's okay. You don't have to talk about it. I don't want to hurt you further by pestering. The bedroom is right there, you can go take rest for a while. I'll wake you up when needed. He said almost getting up. He started to walk to show her the room but noticed she hadn't moved even a bit.
I lost my mother and my brother in a plane crash. I was only 3 when I lost them both. My mother was coming back with my brother and their plane crashed. No one found their bodies too. We couldn't see either of them for the one last time either. I didn't know anything at that time, what happened and how it happened. I only remember my father crying for days. I used to sit in my room looking at him and his unending tears. I used to miss both my mother and brother, but dad wouldn't say anything. He only would say they weren't coming back. That day I not only lost my mom but dad too. He wasn't the same anymore. He would work day and night, while my aunt took care of me. But he would never stop showering his love on me whenever I would be with him. Though I always missed my mom but he would never let that engulf me. He would always console me saying she is watching you always and is always there with you. He would say " Beta, mummy and bhaiya and always around us, they can't hold us neither we can hold them but they are always with us here ; our hearts. And no one can take them away from there. " I wouldn't understand it but his words would make me smile. I was 8 when my dad finally told me the truth that they were dead. Though I knew it as a child too that they were not there, but dead could not suffice the truth. After that day it was only me and dad. We would be happy in our world of our own with our past memories. From that day I got scared of aircraft's. I thought it would take away everyone I had, so I would never let my dad travel in it. But fate was cruel again. It was always cruel to me. She confessed her heart out; with tears formed in her eyes as she remembered the days of her past which she spent weeping. Maan watched her crumbling. Without saying a word he pulled her in his arms, allowing her to cry out her heart. How could he stop her, when she had so much pain buried deep in her pure heart.? He walked her to the bed, making her lay down while she continued shedding the tears. He held her hand, till she cried her eyes to sleep. Finally when her silent sobbing stopped, he left her, laying a quilt on her and walked out of the room. He settled himself on the couch completing some work. After a while, his eyes started watering due to the lack of sleep. Shutting the laptop, he walked into the room to wash his face before taking a nap when the sight in front of him scared him to no end. He stood rotted in his place to see Geet curled up into a ball and shivering. He ran towards the bed, climbing it swiftly and took a shivering and pale Geet in his arms. Even in her subconscious state, Geet clutched onto him tightly, her shivering continuing. Remorse flooded through him for leaving her alone knowing exactly the pain she had been through before sleeping, tired out of crying. He wrapped her in the quilt properly and caressed her hair soothing her. Her shivering was not the cold, it was her fear. He never thought it would go to this extent, she was still better until the moment she relived her past. Holding her in his embrace, he laid down along with her comforting her. Unknowingly, sleep took over him due to the tiredness; both held each other and peacefully slept in the silence, nothing there to break the sweet moment.
The sudden emptiness around him woke him up. He opened his eyes to find the room empty. He clearly remembered Geet shivering badly before he lost his senses. Her absence scared him, as he rushed out of the room recollecting her condition a while ago.
Geet.! He called out loudly. The main area was empty though he heard faint voices from the projection room. He was about to barge in there when he heard her voice.
I'm here. She replied to him in a muffled voice, followed by a giggle. The giggle surprised him making him walk faster towards the room. He pushed the door open to find her settled in a seat with something that happened the reason for her laughter.
Geet, are you alright.? What's all this.? He asked with a raised voice shocked.
I am fine Maan. I know why you are asking me that. It happens when ever I think about the incident, so I try not remembering it at all. But I get over it soon too. Thank you for staying with me. She spoke looking down. His thoughts went back to the moment he held her tightly, slipping into a peaceful sleep.
Stop thanking me Geet. I am glad you are fine now. You did give me a nice good scare when I came into the room and found you in that state. You look better now. He said taking a seat opposite her.
I feel better. She said blushing. Her thoughts went back to the moment when she opened her eyes and she couldn't imagine being in a better place than being in his arms. It gave her an unknown happiness, to watch him hold her tightly and sleeping peacefully yet she was worried about his reaction when he woke up, but it was much better than she imagined. She looked up to see him sitting in front of her watching her questioningly.
By the way, why were you laughing.? And what's that.? He said pointing to the album she tried her best to hide. She smacked herself mentally for not being able to hide the album from him properly. Trying to cover up she decided to distract him.
It's nothing. When will we reach Paris.? She said, covering the album with her pallu. He caught that movement and clearly understood she was trying to hide something. Despite all her efforts, he caught the corner of the album.
Why are you trying to hide that.? He questioned her, confused. His eyes widened in horror as it dawned upon him what it could be. He sprang up from his chair realizing it was his album which Dadimaa proudly shows off always, and this time it was Geet. It made him even more conscious that Geet was giggling seeing those pictures of him. Definitely not good.!
Is that my album.? Dadimaa gave it you right.? Is that why you were giggling.? Give it to me right now. He shot with questions at her, marching towards her to grab the album. Before he could get to her, she was already away from him the album tucked under her arm. He followed her, but she dodged him every time, slipping by him by mere inches. He was enjoying watching her play around forgetting her fears as well as enjoying with her. But he needed that album at any cost. After a lot of efforts, he failed to get the album.
Geet, that's enough.! I said give it to me right now. He said angrily. Geet abruptly stopped fearing his anger and with no further arguments she kept the album on the table in front of her. The last thing she wanted was his anger bursting on her. He was surprised that she gave in so easily later realized she feared his anger. Least did she know he was faking it. Without wasting a second he grabbed the album checking it, it was as he feared. The same album; the one that held his childhood pics.
Thanks.! He said with a grin. As she registered his grin, it sunk in that he was faking his anger.
Khadoos.! She murmured, but his sharp ears caught it . His head snapped in her direction his eyes glaring at her. For a second Geet etched back seeing his anger, but again composed herself.
What did you call me.? He asked glaring at her.
Nothing. Anyway, I have seen those photos so you can take the album with you. She casually said teasing him, rubbing on his wrong side. He groaned at her words, in defeat. The last thing he wanted was someone to see his childhood pics, where he was no less than a showpiece, ready to be pounced on.
You're just saying it to irritate me right.? You haven't seen them.! Say yes.! He said with the same frowning expression. She giggled hearing him complaining like a small kid. He dumped himself on the seat with a thud, he album lying next to him.
I did see some pics. You were a cute baby. She commented as she took a seat too.
No I wasn't. He shot back with a glare. She looked at him with a weird expression, making him sigh in defeat.
All right. Here is the thing Geet, I am tired of listening this all the time. When I was a baby, I was the showpiece for everyone to come and admire me and pull my cheeks. Dadimaa tortures me with these memories. And at any given time, she will show the albums to anybody proudly showing off her "cute" grandson and they all will go ohh and ahhhas irritating me. That's why I kept this album safely, but god knows where she found it again. And off everyone, she gave this to you. I should have seen this coming and now like everyone you also say I was a cute baby. He ranted on and on for the first time ever. She gaped at him, surprised that he could talk so much. He found her gaping at him with wide eyes.
What.? He shot, snapping her out.
But they all are right, you were cute. She admitted with a shrug.
So what.? You want to pull my cheeks now.? He chocked in horror. Geet stared at him with her lips pressed together, holding back laughter. A moment later, the cabin echoed with her giggling and chiming laughter. Maan watched her rolling with laughter as he realized his own words and joined her. Both laughed at his cribbing about his childhood pics. As their laughter died, Maan patted the space next to him asking her to sit next to him. Slowly yet confidently she took the place next to him and to her sweet surprise he opened the album again, keeping it in the middle. He stared explaining about each pic, narrating out his childhood. Geet felt special as he continued to talk about his childhood though she missed hers but she tried not showing it, as she knew it would make him feel guilty. He shut the album with a smile on his face, a contended smile while she returned it with the same enthusiasm. He got up to leave, leaving the album on the table.
Now that you have seen it, you can take some rest and not jump around while I will have word with the crew and come back. I have been out for a while, might have missed a few things. He commented teasingly. He was about to leave when she called him back.
Maan.?
Hmm.? He said turning back.
Can't we be friends.? She asked innocently. She wanted to end the awkwardness between them, and friendship seemed like a god way to start.
Aren't we already.? I thought we were. Of course we are.! He said smiling and walked out of the room leaving behind an elated Geet. She was happy, at least they could be friends. It would be way lot easier for them to converse as surely there were traces of awkwardness between the two even in normal conversations. She sat there going through the album again, admiring the baby Maan. On asking about his parents, Maan revealed that he lost his parents long back like her and the pictures were the only memory he had of them. As she sat there rummaging through the album, Maan came back informing her of their arrival. She accompanied him to the main area as the flight prepared for touchdown. Both took their respective seats. Maan deliberately engaged her in a conversation, trying to distract her from the landing jitters. As the tires hit the ground, the plane jerked making Geet realize that they were no longer airborne. The doors opened, as Paris, the city of love welcomed them. Both unboarded the aircraft, stepping into the enthralling aura of Paris city.
Welcome to Paris, Geet. Maan greeted her as they stood at the foot of the stairs that led them to the aircraft, waiting for the car to escort them to their hotel. A few seconds later a car pulled up along the runway coming to a stop in front of them followed by a man opening the door for them. As both of them took their seats, the car pulled away from the airport premises. Tired, Maan leaned back on the seat closing his eyes while Geet looked out the tinted glasses, admiring the beauty of Paris. Though she never heard of its beauty but couldn't stop herself from concluding it as the most beautiful place her eyes witnessed. As the car glided though the city smoothly her eyes caught the nearby surroundings and the life in Paris. When the car came to a halt at the traffic light Geet's eyes caught a couple kissing in a corner if the street hiding away from the swarming crowd. She gasped, shocked as she saw them unbothered about the watching eyes. Upon looking closely she noticed people clapping at the adorable sight. Maan sat up at once hearing her gasp, looked in her direction but the car had started moving by then for him to see what she saw.
What happened, Geet .? He said, rubbing his eyes to shake off the stupor. She looked back towards him to find him looking at her with a worried expression, that's when she realized the car was moving and she was simply staring at out the window. As his question reached her ears, she looked down in embarrassment worrying Maan.
Geet what happened.? Are you okay..? He asked raising his voice. She looked up and nodded in denial.
Then why did u react like that.? He questioned her with narrowed eyes. She bit her lip unable to explain it to him. Gathering her courage, she tried.
Woh...actually..they were... She uttered stammering.
They.? Who.? Tell me properly. He urged her again.
They...were kissing...on the road. She informed him, looking down embarrassed.
Kissing.?? He confirmed to which she just nodded meekly. She looked up instantly when she heard him chuckle casually like it happened to be no big thing. Confused she looked on him, as he shook his head laughing.
Geet, it's not a big deal. They were just kissing. He replied to her, to which her mouth hung open.
On..the road.? I mean... She said shocked and embarrassed but was hesitant to voice out her exact feelings. Maan understood her hesitation, knowing exactly how shy she was by nature and would definitely hesitate to express her thoughts.
I know what you want to say. But this is Paris Geet, it's called city of love simply because it's air has love. Every corner you look at, you will find love. No one here hesitates to express anything, it goes with the flow. He explained to her causally looking out the window at the beautiful city they were passing through. He looked at her face, which clearly reflected a tussle of thoughts and confusions. He found himself better at reading her now, knowing exactly what she felt at different situations.
Don't hesitate to ask me Geet. Never. I don't want this to be a burden on either of us, so I will ask you to be free with me. I know Dadimaa has sent us here on a honeymoon, but believe me it's nothing like it. You can simply call it more of a vacation than honey moon, because neither of us knows each other that well. This might be our chance for knowing more about each other. I want you to enjoy this without any fears, just enjoy it as the best time of your life. This is my way of making you feel better for the pain I have given you unknowingly which I can never take back no matter how much I wish. He kept talking in a trance while she listened until the last few words caught her attention.
Maan.? She called out, making him stop his words. He stopped abruptly realizing what he said.
Anyway, let's not talk about past now. You are here, so enjoy as much as you can. And we are almost there, the hotel is nearby. He desperately tried to change the topic but it was already troubling Geet. She never blamed him for anything, then what was he suffering about.? Her mind was at its work when the car stopped and Maan got out. She followed him along into the hotel, as he checked in and both were soon led by the staff towards a small independent cottage which was a part of the hotel. As they entered the room, Geet was awestruck by the exquisite interiors of the cottage; a heaven for any newlyweds. The cottage resembled a flawless and serene symbol of love, with beauty cornered in every part. As she admired the cottage, she observed Maan staring at a painting with a different spark in his eyes. She stood beside him admiring the same painting, trying to catch what his orbs were admiring.
I always wanted to become a painter. Never got the chance, but it was my secret passion. When I see such beautiful paintings, I feel and I wish I could have such masterpieces with me always. He sighed. Geet smiled contended and happy that he willingly shared things with her now.
I guess some passions remain just as dreams. Let's go take some rest, it's late any which ways. We can go out tomorrow, is that okay..?
Hmm.! She replied nodding . Just as he was about to leave, her hand automatically stretched out to hold his hand. Holding his hand, she walked up to his front facing him.
If you are blaming yourself for what happened between me and Nisha. Please don't. I have forgotten that, and I want you to forget it too. Please.? She requested.
Geet...I... He hesitated.
Maan, please.! She insisted, but it wasn't enough to make him forget the insult she faced.
Geet, it's not easy. You faced an insult which you never deserved, because of me. Whatever it was, it was between me and her, but she dragged you into all of this which is making me feel guilty.
But it wasn't you who dragged me to it. How right is it that you take her blame on yourself.? I never blamed you nor will I ever blame you. She confessed, finally.
But why.?
You only asked me to consider this as a vacation and enjoy, I would want you to apply the same thing to yourself. You have been stressed too. She shot back. He looked at her and with a heavy heart he nodded, making her smile a little and walked to the room leaving her alone. Geet spent some more time admiring the view outside from the top floor. The cottage was situated on a certain height, away from the bustling crowd of the hotel. Spending about an hour, she entered the room to find Maan relaxed on the couch who looked like he had already slept. As she neared the huge bed, she noticed Maan had already unlocked the bags for her, grabbing her night gown she entered the luxurious washroom, with highly exclusivity features, beyond description. While she changed, cold air hit her sending a shiver down her spine making her realize the chilliness of the place. Coming out she looked towards Maan who looked like he was cold too. After searching all the wrong palaces, she managed to find a blanket. Grabbing it, she ran towards Maan who was in deep sleep. She noticed the tiredness on his face, quietly approaching the couch she laid the blanket on him. Just as she was about to leave, something about his face caught her attention. He was smiling in his sleep, possibly dreaming about something making him happy. She kneeled down, taking a loving look at him and unknowingly, she slowly lifted her hand to caress his cheek. Her touch did not break his sleep as she was careful enough not to make him feel it. A smile stretched up her lips, as she saw him sliming happily, be it in his sleep. Not taking her eyes off him, she walked back to the bed pulling the blanket over herself. She plopped herself on her side, where her eyes could see him. With a smile on her face, his smile in her eyes she closed her eyelids welcoming a beautiful sleep awaiting her and more importantly; a beautiful day awaiting both of them.
