I always think why we have family oriented, joint family system, (thanks raj) culture in east and why not in west. Not only India but if you observe other eastern countries one way or another have family oriented societies.

Another important aspect of eastern societies are that they are not economically stable as that of west. They have larger populations most of which living below poverty line. For a person family support is essential for the survival over there.

What do you think .. is it all about money or security ?

Do you think economical development would ultimately change the scenario over there ?

QT for you 😉😆. Do you think if you provide a full financial security to MILs for their old age ,they would be less intrusive in their children's life?

What makes you think that west doesn't have family oriented culture? I know families here who are well knit and support each other financially/morally. Sorry couldn't get the meaning of it.

Not necessarily – without family's support good majority of people survive, the ones who bank on families are individuals who either studying/working on career(nothing wrong in that just mentioning) OR ppl who don't wish to work – I think this is the same case in West.

Question 1 - You mean the family oriented culture? I would say because of inheritance from ancestors. There must have been reasons like love + values + support etc etc.

Question 2 – No, it doesn't matter, depends on individuals - who don't like family oriented culture rich or poor are out of it.

I don't really think so. Excessive interference in others' lives (sometimes out of kindness and willingness to help) is part of eastern culture. Neighbours, our extended family and ofcourse parents may display such behaviour. The good side obviously being manpower in times of need, it has sustained for generations.

Now coming to the topic whether being nosy and interfering is about money, I tend to disagee with you. I know of several wealthy mothers in law financially even more secure than their kids😆 , who cannot stop being nosy. On the other hand, some unfortunate ones, who actually take monetary help from their sons may feel a bit obliged to their son and his wife and may back off a little fearing that estranged relation with son could make their own life impossible to lead. The secure ones have no such fear 😕 😉 😆 and they are happily intruding in every business / decision that is not their own responsibility in any way..

(disclaimer- no generalization here, i am not criticizing, i have no statistics to back my views, it is an observation/ experience)

I have observed some couples who were first generation to USA or UK who did for their parents, their children and are very well planned for their own retirement. Again With no financial expectations from children to support them in their older age.

What about the children who are interested in knowing details abt the finances of their Very well to do parents? Any takers on this ?

i know the wife of one such child 😳😳 who is interested, but the child is not, so no use 😭😭..
kidding.. 😆

yes, I find it wierd that kids expect and even demand to know the details and essentially their own share of it all. Children should look ahead of the time and make it on their own. There are unforseen and unfortunate events that could compell one to expect / request help from parents. But that has nothing to do with being nosy and greedy. What irritates me is kids who FIGHT over their wealthy parents's property in spite of being financially secure themselves.. GREED is bad.. Interference is bad.. BOTH WAYS..

Most people in this world are materialistic. We desire for so many things in life and to fulfill that we need money. When our wishes are fulfilled we do feel happy. Such quotes like 'Money can't buy happiness' looks good in books but in life, money is very important. We are practical people not saints.
