Arjun held his breath and waited for her answer.

His best friend sameer stood behind curtain and crossed his fingers.

"Come on roshni, say yes to him... come on..." sameer muttered to himself.

"Roshni, main nahin jaanta ki main kab tumse pyaar kar baitha. And yes I am not perfect. I have my own flaws, insecurities. Par main itna jaanta hun ki main tumse pyaar karta hun. Bohut zyada. Kya tum meri iss zindagi mein roshni laaogi?"

Roshni looked back in his black orbs, that were oozing love for her. She knew he was the man who could keep her happy always.

Mrs. Aaradhya Rawte was shot when the former was said to be visiting temple to offer prayers. It is suspected that she was shot by sniper hired by a local gangster. The target was laid on ACP Arjun Suryakant Rawte but his mother, Aaradhya rawte was the victim...'

Roshni jerked away from Arjun when the flash of news of past played in her mind, as if in a loop.

"Roshni..."

"nahin Arjun. I don't love you or neither do I wish to marry you. We are not meant to be together."

"par roshni... kyun?" Arjun was distraught

"maine kaha naa Arjun.. I don't love you. Infact I cannot fall in love with a person like you. Just lemme go. And please.. never come after me."

"roshni..."

"if you really love me, let me go Arjun"

With that she walked off leaving him with his broken dreams and uncertain future.

Sameer came out from his hiding place, looking at retreating figure of roshni. At that moment he was feeling like jerking her and asking her the damn answers for all the questions for all his questions.

Had he not seen her love for Arjun, or should he say love at first sight??!! Then why the hell was he saying she did not love him??? What went wrong?? Was her concern for Arjun, her consoling him was all fake?? Sameer was about to move after her but one look of Arjun n his knees, head bend down, hunched back, made him rush to him.

"Arjun..."

"I am fine sam... I am very much fine" he faked a smile at his friend.

"tu thik hai?"

"mujhe kya hoga??? Tu bhi naa... main jaake manager se saare decorations ke payment settle karta hun. Tu ghar jaa thik hai??" Arjun walked off without glancing back.

Few moments back, he was happy and in the nest split second, his life had turned upside down. His love did not love him back. He had lost everything in his life but was hanging on just because he thought that there she stood with her arms open, ready to love him, ready to sooth him, just the way she did when his mom left him for ever. She made him feel loved, wanted but she now says she cannot love a person like him. Why?! A big lump formed in his throat, eyes welled up. He felt pain gnawing in his heart. He could not bear that any longer. He quickly cleared the bills and drove his SUV in break neck speed to his house.

He locked himself in his room. He stood near the window and recalled every memory related to her. every moment they spent together came in front of his eyes as if they were happening right before him. he had hugged her tight after his mother's funeral. She had soothed him and said it was not his fault. She very well knew he loved his mom immensely. She was with him all the time, helping him cope with his loss, made him smile again.

He just lay on his back on his vast bed, eyes staring ahead, watching the way the fan rotated.

He did not know why her rejection hurt him so much. It was perfectly fine; don't think about her now, his mind yelled, but his treacherous heart, it was no where in a condition to accept it. HE LOVED HER. Period. And he was not someone who would love and forget her, the next instant.

"I am amongst those unfortunate people maa who do not deserve to be loved. Pehle papa, phir aap, aur ab roshni. Main bohut akela padd gaya hun maa... kaash aap mere saath yahan hoti..." Arjun said holding his mom's photo.

Sleep eluded him that night.

sameer paced the length of the corridor in ETF. He was hell worried about his friend. He would not pick his calls and was neither at his house.

"where the hell are you Rawte?" he muttered. Just then he saw the door bursting open and entered Arjun.

"kahan the tum? Tab se phone laga raha hun? Bata nahin sakta kahin jaane se pehle???" sameer started his tirade.

Arjun held him by his shoulders and walked towards conference room.

"chill sammy... main kahin nahin gaya tha... aaj maa ka birthday hai naa to mandir gaya tha bas..." he smiled at sameer.

"tu sach mein theek hai naa? Tu aise ajeeb se..."

"arre sam... main hun hi ajeeb. Tu hi kehta hai naa??? And I am perfectly fine. Tu chinta matt kar oki... bhala mujhe kya hoga?"

Sameer knew his friend too well. He had mastered to hide his feelings over years. And this was last straw.

"tu theek nahin hai arju... main janta hun"

"main theek hun baba... sacchi..."

It broke him to pieces when he lied to his sam. But he had no choice. Did he? He did not want his friend to worry about him.

"Koi case ke silsile mein baahar jaana thaa naa?? Chalo lets move" Arjun said and marched out grabbing his gun.

"Arjun..." before sameer could continue Arjun was out of the cabin.

"team lets move" he said and marched out.

in the SUV:
'I know Arjun its not easy to forget what happened. Par ye bhi nahin hai ki mom ke baad tum apna khayal rakhna bhul jao. Ma ko bura lagega naa?'

Par roshni... it was because of me she lost her life. I know that bullet was meant for me and not her. I bloody...'

arjun... kuch cheezein aise hote hai jo hamare haath mein nahin hote. We can do nothing at all... par ye bhi socho.maa wahan taara bannke tumhe dekh rahi hai. Tumhe khud ko koste dekh unhe bura nahin lagega kya? You want to hurt her?'

Arjun nodded his head in no and asked her innocently

maa taara bann gayi hai...?' a tear rolled from his eye.

haan...' Arjun hugged her tight and let few tears flow, wetting her shoulder.

Sudden halt of SUV brought Arjun out of his reverie.

"chale?" sameer asked him. Arjun just nodded his head and stepped out of SUV.

Not much later, situation turned worse and ETFians were hiding behind large crates and shooting at the smugglers.

"CHOTU... SAM KO COVER KAR"

"JI SIR.."

ETF was heavily outnumbered and Arjun did not understand what to do. They had to get out of the damned place and there was no way out for them.

"sammy, you need to move out of this blastid place. We need to buy time till backup reaches us and we can do that only if we reach the entrance."

"I know arju par..."

"just take everyone one out from there..." and he ran in another direction, towards another exit.

"arju..."

Arjun leapt out of his cover, firing, and ran towards the exit door.

Every member of ETF was horrified watching Arjun placing himself as bait.

"ARJUN..."

Arjun just gestured them to move out as attention was diverted towards him.

"Sameer cursed under his breath and ushered everyone out. He was worried about Arjun but at the same time he was ETF chief and he had to act like one.

They took their positions and started firing openly. They kept a close eye on the other exit waiting for Arjun.

They were in relief when they saw Arjun out of the door firing, part of his white shirt soaked in blood.

Not much later, they were with backup force handling everything.

Finally sameer reached Arjun who was panting hard.

"kya kar raha tha tu Arjun???? Apni jaan koi khatre mein daalta hai aise? Kya socha tu ne? you will put your self as bait in front of them and save us? Samajhta kyun nahin hai tu? Teri jaan bhi jaa sakti thi!!!!"

"mujhe koi parwa nahin hai sammy... aur meri jaan?! Wo to kab ki jaa chuki hai" Arjun said dejectedly and tried to walk off examining his hand where the bullet had just grazed.

Sameer pulled him by his arm and slapped him across his face with full force. Entire team stood shell shocked at the scene.

Arjun just stared sameer with blank eyes.

"tujhe kya lagta hai Arjun? She rejected you so your life saw it's the end? kyun???? Kya maa koi maine nahin rakhti? kya main tere liye koi maine nahin rakhta? Tu jaanta bhi hai mujhe kaisa lag raha tha tujhe wahan bullets ke beech dekh kar?? Andaaza bhi hai tujhe? Par tujhe kya hai? Tu to devdas ban na chahta hai naa?? To bann... uski yaad mein sab kuch bhula de. Main bhi chala jaaunga.. rehle akele. Meri to tujhe koi zarorat hi nahin hai naa??" sameer jerked him once and started walking away.

"samm... tu bhi chala jaayega mujhe chodke?" his voice was filled with so much pain, anguish that it cut sameer's heart into two. He immediately turned and hugged Arjun tight.

"main bohut akela hogaya hun... that house haunts me now... this silence, wo akelapan... nahin hota mujhse aur bardash... agar tu bhi chala jayega to main kaise jiyu sam??" his voice chocked, heavy with emotions.

"no arju... I wont go anywhere... main mere bhai ko chod ke kaise jau bol... don't worry... sab theek hojayega... trust me..." sameer just hugged Arjun tight.
