Chapter 1
"Before I start, I have questions that need to be answered. First question, where is my brother, second, where is your sister?" asked Sharon.
"Dad's in his office and pankhudi is in boarding school. Now can we start the story, I'm dying to hear it." Said riti
"Why so soon, I'm here for a month, and by the way your dad is still in office, its past midnight, since when did he become a workaholic."
"Ever since I can remember, he was always a workaholic, anyways tell your story. I know you are not getting any sleep." Nagged an impatient riti.
"Okay fine, I was just teasing, so before starting a story I need to tell about its main characters, well in this story, there is only one main character and that is me, the rest will be described as I want to describe them."
Riti patiently listened.
"To start with, let me tell you about myself. I was 12 when my life turned 180 degrees. I was a simple girl with normal aspirations. You must have heard in love stories, about a girl who comes from a small town to a big city and finds it difficult to adjust and she is helped by the hero and falls in love with him later.
But with me it was the total opposite. I have lived in big cities all my life.
I used to live in Mumbai but was forced to move to kota due to dad's business.
I hated that city till I lived there; I don't like it even now. There was no greenery to be seen. I still remember my first day in that place. It was terrible."
Flashback:
"The airport was so small, it did not have a good duty free at all, no coffee shops and no bookstores, I had expressed my disapproval to coming to that place but I knew I'd not have much of a say. Wherever my father went, we followed; we had to live together at any cost."
"The first discomfort that I encountered was as soon as I walked out of the airport and ran into my father's arms. He hugged me and my mother as he had not seen us for more then two months. The escorted us outside.
Believe me, this was the hottest place on earth. It was so hot that I was getting burns on my arms by just standing outside for 10 minutes."
I remember my father talking to me about the weather; it was 54 degrees when I had come. We sat in the car and the driver was taking us to a guest house since we did not have any house yet. My parents were busy talking to the driver while I was busy staring outside the window."
"The place was so DULL; it did not have any trees or even people walking on the streets for that matter. It was not a village, it was a dessert. I wanted to just get out of the car and plant some trees everywhere"
"you must be thinking, why am I so obsessed with plants, well the answer to that was I like the colour green a lot and my mother was always fascinated with plants, where ever we went we would have a garden with at least 150 birds coming to eat their bajra, drink water and bathe in the afternoon.
Even Mumbai was a green place, kota was a nightmare."
We reached the bungalow in 30 minutes. It was called sanata villa.
True to its name, it was sanata (quite and lonely) there. There was a cook and a cleaner who lived there. Everyday after my father went to office; there was a silence that freaked me out. My mother and I did not converse much. We could not go out since it was too hot. It just made my life worse.
I would also like to mention about my room, it was not as big as my room in Mumbai, anyways I did not care much, and I was not living there for more than a month. I was waiting to find the right home for me.
Days passed since we shifted to kota. One evening my father returned home and said "you are going for an interview to your new school, st.louis International academy in two weeks. It is one of the best in town, you might love it.
So start your preparation, here are your portions. They are not giving any test to you but it is better to be prepared, anyways as soon as you join the school, you will have your half-yearly exams. I want you to top this time"
I nodded in approval and left from there.
Some more days passed by, we found our new house; it looked like a doghouse, if compared to our mansion in Mumbai. I hated my room it was so small. I don't have words to describe it. It was cramped up and did not have any space but still, it was loved by my parents. I had no say in the matter.
Two weeks somehow got over and I was taken to an interview.
I was being interviewed by the principal of the school, Mr. S.K Acharya.
He looked quite old but had quite a personality; he looked like a person who was experienced, intelligent and open-minded. If I had any problem I would prefer going to him than to anyone else, he would have a peaceful approach to the situation. I felt huge respect for him since the time I met him, he had the knowledge of the world but was down to earth. I knew I had a lot to learn from him. He only asked me two questions,
"What do you want to become and how do you imagine your future?"
"Sir, I want to become a dancer when I grow up. I imagine my life in the future very bright. I imagine myself living in a white mansion, owning a black roles Royse phantom of the latest model, drinking wine from a glass mage of crystal." I replied.
"A dancer, so you want to follow your passion and also want to be rich. Is that possible? And about the money part, I think you seem greedy."
"Yes it is possible sir, I want to follow my passion, my parents support my decision, and I don't think that me aiming to be rich is a bad thing at all, I would not call it greed sir, I'd call it ambition and if one has no ambition, that person's life is useless. One always needs something that will motivate them to keep moving forward." I answered
"What is your responsibility towards your country?" he asked the second question
"My responsibility towards my country is to be a responsible and an active citizen. I have the responsibility to encourage and accept change. It is my responsibility to voice out my opinions on the current affairs of my country, it is my responsibility to do my duties and ensure the right of every citizen of my country. It is my responsibility to help my country uplift itself. I answered.
"Welcome to st.louis international Ms Rai Prakash, you have qualified. I am pleased on meeting a person like you, I am proud to hear a student of 12 years speak like that." He complimented.
"Thank you Sir." I replied smiling with content.
"You are most welcome; you may complete the formalities in the reception."
He said. I left his cabin and went to complete the formalities. I looked through the school, it was small too. It sure did not have any infrastructure. I was getting used to this.
I walked to the reception and stood in the line to pay my fees. You must be thinking, where are my parents? Well they were waiting in the car outside my school praying that I pass. Parents of children who have come for an interview cannot enter the school premises.
Anyways coming to the main point, I had seen a handsome guy in his jersey holding a basketball and a trophy which meant he won a game, something attracted me about him, I did not see him that clearly though, I knew nothing about him, so I just ignored my thought and went on to pay my fees.
I soon completed the formalities and exited the campus. I prayed for the best time in this school."
"That's it for today you should sleep now."
"What, not now bua, pls continue, what about that guy, who was he? Tell na bua?" riti pleaded
"No not now, it is two in the night and c'mon where am I running away. I'll tell the rest next time, and the guy is surely someone of major importance.
I promise I will introduce him to you soon, now good night."
Sharon said and left the room.
