On September 25, we told you that Sonakshi Sinha had been roped in for a Mukta Arts film.Though producer Subhash Ghai has kept the project under wraps, TOI can now report that the film will see Sonakshi playing Dalbir Kaur, the sister of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian citizen who spent 22 years in a Pakistan prison on charges of espionage. Though Sarabjit, a native of Punjab, died in a Lahore prison this year after an attack by fellow inmates, his life story and his sister's long struggle to bring him back home, captivated the nation. Buzz is, Ghai has already taken the required permission from Sarabjit Singh's family and Dalbir has given her nod of approval.
A source told this newspaper that the film which will recreate Dalbir's efforts to free her brother from prison is being written by Rajesh Berry. "It is a sensitive topic. Ghai's team does not want to make any mistakes. Dalbir has given a long version of her battle to free her younger brother and Berry is in touch with her frequently," said the source.
"Sonakshi took her time to say yes but her excitement about the role was clearly visible when she first heard about the role," added the source. While Ghai had evaded a confirmation on the story then, this time too he refused to comment when we contacted him.
The film will be directed by ad-filmmaker Ishwar Singh Muchla. The project is likely to go on floors early next year. As of now, Ghai and Ishwar are scouting for the actor who will play Sarabjit Singh.
