Sonakshi Sinha has reportedly signed up to play a woman who campaigned for 22 years to free her brother Sarabjit Singh.

The Indian man, who died this year in jail, was imprisoned by Pakistan authorities on espionage charges for 22 years.



A source told the Mumbai Mirror: "Sonakshi took her time to say yes but her excitement about the role was clearly visible when she first heard about the role.

"It is a sensitive topic. [Subhash] Ghai's team does not want to make any mistakes. Dalbir has given a long version of her battle to free her younger brother and Berry is in touch with her frequently."

Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur, 56, is said to have approved director Subhash Ghai's casting decision.

The 26-year-old has previously spoken out against the idea of playing a "damsel in distress" on screen.

She said: "I am a strong person and there's no damsel bit in me. I like putting other people in distress!"

In August, Sinha revealed that she is keen to star in a biopic of the 1950s acting legend Madhubala.

Hope this movie does so... I have read breifly about Sarabjit's life and his sisters role was a huge one in whole episode (sorry if I sound inappropriate)
