Part 13:
The tears I had stored in my eyes came out all at once. Each tear brought a question in my mind. I didn't know what to ask.
Luckily, my Spiderman understood what I was going through. He wiped my tears and said, "I know you have a question paper for me to solve but let me tell you everything first. After that we both will have to find answers for many questions."
ACP Sanghvi came to me and said, "Sorry for not telling you anything. Like this, I need to apologize to you for many things. Let me tell you what happened as you would be more interested in that than my apologies."
"I was on a work trip and I was coming back to Mumbai in a bus. Suddenly, we heard a sound from the top. The bus driver applied a sudden brake and a body fell off the bus. We all got down from the bus to look at what happened. Being a police officer, I couldn't help but go near the body to see if he is alive or dead. Fortunately, the person had a faint pulse. I called for an ambulance and within couple of hours, that person was being treated in a nearby hospital. While waiting for him, I received a phone call from one of my informer that he got caught and in the chase, he killed the criminal I was planning to bring to justice."
I sat down on a rock. I processed the information ACP gave me. I hardly managed to ask, "If he was treated, why is he here?"
Spiderman said, "The informer was Bala. The criminal was Vasu Bhau." He pointed towards his assistant saying that.
I felt the puzzle is not complete yet. "So Vasu Bhau is dead. Then why did you become Vasu Bhau?"
Bala spoke, this time in a polite manner compared to the last time I saw him. "I grew up with Vasu Bhau. He was a very nice man. The only thing bad about him was his blind trust in his Aai. He did everything she said - smuggling, land settlement, drugs, murders, and so on. She turned him into a criminal while no one had any records against her. When I realized this, I wanted to help Bhau by getting Aai arrested. For that we needed proof. So I had a deal with ACP Sanghvi that if I get the proof to arrest Aai, he would let Vasu Bhau scot-free."
"Everything went well until that day. When I was collecting evidence, Vasu Bhau caught me. Instead of asking me why I did, he started hitting me, calling me disloyal. I tried to make him understand but he was blinded by Aai's fake love. When he tried to shoot me, I got hold of the revolver and in the moment of heat I didn't see where I was shooting. I shot Vasu Bhau in the heart and he was dead. I didn't know what to do and called ACP Sanghvi."
ACP continued, "If Aai got to know that Bala killed Vasu Bhau, she would surely kill him. I couldn't think of a solution. A couple of days passed. I asked Bala to go into hiding. One day, I was visiting Mr. Bhatnagar in the hospital. He was recovering, so I didn't want to disturb him. But he noticed my tension and offered to help as he is a journalist."
Spiderman said, "ACP asked me to pose as Vasu Bhau and I agreed. While I recovered, Bala helped me understand Vasu and his mannerism. We went back to Mumbai and gave a plastic surgery story for the change of face. She didn't buy it easily. She kept throwing in a challenge every now and then to test whether I was Vasu. After few months, she came to accept it."
Okay, I understood all that. But one piece was still missing.
Why did Spiderman choose to help ACP Sanghvi instead of returning home?
