No. I don't think Jalaal came to Jodha's chambers to throw another bouncer or play a mental tic-tac-toe with her. He came because he is APOLOGETIC . He came because even though he cannot say sorry emotively , he wants to do SOMETHING that can make up for what he has done to her. He is subconsciously trying to make-up for what he has done to Jodha. Behind that smirk, the apology-freedom barter , the "you hate me and my world" excuse, is Jalaal's attempt at redeeming himself. And from where he is standing , he can redeem himself and the SHAHENSHAH inside him by only one way - By giving Jodha what he has snatched from her - Her Freedom.
Jalaal does not understand marriage, its sanctity or how deep this man-woman bond runs ( and it shows in how he used marriage as a weapon to get Jodha under his claws ) . But he does understand RIGHT and WRONG in the clinical sense, if not emotional. He has always known when he has been horrid and when he has been angelic to her. He is always aware of his intentions behind everything that he has done to Jodha. ... So, when he tells Jodha that she has two options - she can either leave him forever and go back to Amer with honour or else stay back here in Agra and keep playing aankh-micholi with him as his beloved wife.
Yes, Jalaal knows and understands the repercussions. Its the 1500s and Jodha will be called an 'abandoned wife' but... his logic is also in place - "Ho sakta hai ki iss ke baad taaumar aap akeli rahein... lekin wo zindagi uss insaan ke saath rehne se bahot behtar hai jisse aap ittni nafrat karti hain."... In a way ECHOING Jodha's -" Aap ke saath rehne se toh mar jaana behtar hai."
Fair enough... if you look at it objectively.
As for what Jalaa is thinking?... Jalaal does not want Jodha to go... or else he would have never given her a choice of staying back. He would have simply nicely packed her bags and given her good bye kisses.
Jodha? We have come to the point where we know that for Jodha , this marriage is for keeps. Below her 'Ghrinaa' facade, her hopes of making this marriage work and her emotional tension with Jalaal have often shown up...
Nahiin Jalaal... Jodha tumhe chhod ke kabhi nahiin jaayegi, chaahe koi bhi wajah de..Khulaa aapke yahaan hotaa hoga... inke liye saat janam ka toh pataa nahiin, lekin is janam mein yahi ek shaadi hai aur tumhi ek shauhar.
And Jalaal , unaware or aware, hopes that Jodha will not leave him and go. Jaane ki ijaaat dekar insaaf kiyaa, do raaste dekar apni ummeed rakhi... or else why would he tell a to-be-separated wife that green looks hot on her?
