How is Saraswati better than Barkha?

Now we all know Barkha, despite of being Nikhil's real biological mother has treated him in an entirely unforgivable manner. She has literally been just ignored his very presence and is completely indifferent to him. She is selfish because her heartbreak over her lost son means more to her than her surviving clearly traumatized son. Not to mention the fact that she continues to blame Nikhil for Akash's death even when he is innocent and she knows this.

But how is Laajo in any way better off?

Unlike Barkha's indifference that Nikhil is accustomed to, Saraswati's selfishness came out of the blue and broke Laajo inside.

Her mother betrayed her. Personally, I find her mother to be selfish too. Instead of their love becoming her strength, it's become her weakness. When everyone was pointing fingers at her character, when all she sought was some understanding from her own mother, she was shunned. Her own mother attacked her, shattered her self-esteem and broke her confidence down. Laajo, who played around carefree, got up to mischief just to hear her mom yell at her cuz she cared enough was left to wonder when her mother lost all respect for her.

Initially, Saraswati was more concerned about society, customs etc. rather than her daughter's happiness thus she wanted to get her married to a greedy family. Later she was more concerned about the shame and dishonour even when she knew her daughter was innocent, when she knew her daughter needed her. Then, she went ahead and got Laajo and Nikhil married even when she knew they belonged to two different worlds. And now, she expects Laajo (and Nikhil to some extent) to have moved past their differences in two days only and live together like a happily married couple. All because that is what she wishes for her daughter with no real thought as to what her daughter might be going through. Why is she so blind to the whole situation that she shoved Laajo in to begin with?

So I really wanna know why you think Saraswati is in any way less guilty than Barkha? Yes, Nikhil is a gem of a person and Laajo got lucky with him but what if he wasn't? What if he abandoned her once they got to the city? Came back and dropped her off at the village like he intended to? Didn't support her in front of his family? Wouldn't Saraswati once again have caved into the social pressures and cursed Laajo? Wouldn't that have pushed Laajo into depression and perhaps worst still, suicide?

Think about it and tell me. How is one better than the other?

Very well said you can't say or describe saraswati a woman from the village to react so i'll only say in a few words she only knows how to turn something to her own advantage and then she begins with her over nicely wordsI will say sometimes it is very tough to watch her as she put too much efforts to be sweet.
in a certain way Barkha is better than her though she knows that it was not Nikhil fault to let his brother hand.
One it was raining, secondly Akash was elder than Nikhil for him to hold Akash.

Nice post. Don't have too much too add other than the fact that even though Saraswati treated Lajjo like crap she still felt bad about it (when talking to her hubby) on the other hand Barkha seems to have no remorse for her treatment of Nikhil all these years (IMHO that is😳).

That's how our culture is like, we put first what society will think and we want to avoid being talked about in the negative sense, both mothers that's what they are trying to avoid, Saraswathi knowing the grandfather and aunt of Nikhil living in the same village seem down to earth people despite being wealthy, so she probably thinks Nikhils dad and rest of his family are down to earth like the family they know in their village, what they know of Nikhil giving the money for the dowry, so concerned about Laajo to offer to marry her, marry her take her from there bring her back for Paag phere, when she goes to ask the grandfather and aunt they also playing along that Laajo is accepted and loved at her sasural and loved by her husband to be visiting places etc, Laajo herself also is playing along to this game, Nikhil is feeding her gulab jamun as well to prove his love, can't blame the village family entirely, all are hiding from them that the people in the city are snobs and refusing to accept the marriage. They don't even know about Ishana, Nikhil's friends, his aunt all should have gone to Saraswati and family and told them at least that he loves someone else before they marriage but nobody stepped up, can't expect Saraswati to guess as from what she knows of the family they are down to earth good people.

I completely agree. It's like I'm super nice to you as long as things go my way, if they don't there will be hell to pay!

Barkha knows all this. She just likes to blame Nikhil because she needs a reason, an excuse, something real she can focus her anger on and not just fate. Barkha is honest about her dislike for Nikhil and even if it hurts him, Nikhil knows his mom is cold and distant. I think that's the most important bit. She doesn't just change with situations you know?

Thank you. 😊

You know I think Barkha feels remorse too, but it isn't greater than her anger at her loss, isn't big enough for her to recify her mistakes and make amends.

Saraswati is very open about her feelings. When she is angry, she yells and curses. When she is happy, she hugs and laughs. Barkha isn't like that. You know that conversation in Nikhil's room? I got the feeling that Barkha does feel remorse and she knows very well how her attitude affects Nikhil which is why she could manipulate him so easily. I think I have a weird fascination with Barkha. 😕

So very true! How are they (Laajo's family) to know anything is amiss when everyone is either pretending everything is fine or not correcting her assumption? Saraswati did worry about Lajjo's reception at her sasural (as per her convo with her SIL) and since everyone has either re-assured her or have not told her otherwise then she has assumed that all is fine & that everyone has accepted Lajjo which is probably why she is acting the way she is. Also as I mentioned before even though she took out her anger @ her daughter she also felt remorse for doing so. I think if we put ourselves in her shoes we could understand where she is coming from to some extent. On the other hand for Barka to hold an accident over Nikhil's head since he was just a little boy is just too much IMHO. It was an accident and while she should mourn her loss she also should not have put the blame on her younger son for all these years...
