In my opinion, he was justified as a ruler but he failed abysmally as a father. Udai Singh is a highly flawed character, especially when it comes to the differential treatment of his wives and sons. Pratap isn't that sensitive to his mothers feelings as such, plus his mother is a much stronger person. Shakti is more perceptive.. Udai unknowingly drove shakti to go to such an extent where he behaves this way. Shakti is young and desperately needs affection along with guidance. Shakti and his father are actually quite similar. The only problem with Shakti is he is quick tempered and acts on impulse which lands him in trouble, which is quite common among people of his age.

Udai singh took the decision as a king, not as a father. All shakti needed was respect and love from his father. The situation could have been very tactfully handled.

I agree. But being the King he has also right and duty to investigate the crime fully. But he did not do so.

The man's acting is good. But the character is - no need to elaborate!

The investigation that was conducted by Pratap could have been conducted by the so called great Maharana also. He did not bother to take all witnesses' accounts.

Being a king he is just a dictator who does anything at his whim. Law is BS, which is evident in how he backstabbed Pratap after declaring him Crown Prince and later depriving him of that and making Jagmal the king due to his favorite wife's influence.

Feeble minded man!

He is not even vigilant! In his craze over Jagmal's birth he let off criminals and failed to recognise Shams Khan also who was standing in front of him.

Bada aaya King!

@bold.. I missed that! 👍🏼 True, but I guess in those days most kings acted like that. What I don't understand is why does his fuse go off when it comes to his own flesh and blood. Its like he is going out of the way to show that he is not biased (common people vs. his family) in any way.

That is so true. US failed to investigate the death of soldier. He should've served justice in the light of evidence and witnesses. He did not bother to call upon witnesses. Where were his nobles and ministers? I mean nobody spoke up against the unjust ruling/judgement. Rawat ji was gone to his village but everybody else was there. Shakti Sigh was accused and found guilty of murder because he decided not to open up his mouth and tell the truth because this kid was upset with his dad and wanted to give him pain and suffering.
I think he was an unfair and stupid ruler of Mewar who had fallen under the influence of his favorite queen, Rani Bhatiyani, and had willed that her son Jagmal should ascend to the throne.
Where as Pratap Sigh, according to historians, was a role model with good moral character. When Udai singh died in 1572, as the late Maharana's body was being taken to the cremation grounds, Pratap Singh, the Crown Prince decided to accompany the dead body of US. This was a departure from tradition as the Crown Prince did not accompany the body of the departed Maharana but instead prepared to ascend the throne, such that the line of succession remained unbroken. Pratap Singh, in deference to his father's wishes, decided to let his half-brother Jagmal become the next king. However, knowing this to be disastrous for Mewar, the late Maharana's nobles, especially the Chundawat Rajputs, forced Jagmal to leave the throne to Pratap Singh. Unlike Bharat, Jagmal did not willingly give up the throne. He swore revenge and left for Ajmer, to join the armies of Akbar, where he was offered a jagir - the town of Jahazpur - in return for his help. Meanwhile, Crown Prince Pratap Singh became Maha Rana Pratap Singh I, 54th ruler of Mewar in the line of the Sisodiya Rajputs.
