Real love in reel life

February 14, 2007
Valentine's Day in today's India is as important as any other national festival. We witness teenagers shopping for their dates, going out for parties and, of course, jamming cellular networks with hundreds of SMSs going back and forth. rediff.com caught up with a few television celebrity couples and asked them about their fond Valentine memories.

Tina and Hussain

"We celebrated our first anniversary in last December, so we are excited about Valentine's Day," says Tina, now famous for her dance performance in Nach Baliye. "We had a courtship for more than 10 years before we tied the knot. The most exciting Valentine's Day we spent together was the first one. Hussain came on a bike to pick me up. But as luck would have it, I was wearing a mini skirt that day!" Tine exclaims. She realised that it was impossible to ride pillion with such a short skirt. Not one to let go of a good Valentine's Day, they thought of an alternative. "We immediately went to a shop and bought a pair of jeans for me. Once I was aptly dressed, we went for a movie," remembers Tina. But this was not the end of their adventurous Valentine's Day. "Unfortunately, Hussain did not know the way to the theatre. When we managed to reach the theatre, we found out they were playing an adult movie!" she laughs. Hussain was caught on the wrong foot again, but since he did everything unintentionally, Tina didn't mind. "We went for lunch after that to New Yorkers (in South Mumbai). And even here, Hussain did not know it was a vegetarian restaurant! It was really not his day! The chicken-freak that he is, Hussain truly had a tough time," she says.

Having learnt from his mistakes, this time, the couple plans to celebrate over a candlelight dinner at home.

Shakti Singh and Sai Deodhar

"Let me tell you Shakti is a very unromantic person. He is completely against candle light dinners, gifts, flowers and all that mushy stuff. But he did take me out for a lovely dinner last year," says Sai, dreamy-eyed. "Shakti even gifted me a cool mobile and a soft toy! Any lady would like a surprise like this, and so did I. More so, because it was completely unexpected from a person like Shakti!" she exclaims.

Since they had a very brief courtship (about 30 days) before marriage, last year was their first Valentine's Day together. "I am planning to give a personalised gift to Shakti this year! Let's see what is in store for me," says the smiling actress.

Varun Badola and Rajeshwari

"All I remember of Valentine's Day is my college and how many cards and roses I used to get!" Rajeshwari smiles. "We used to celebrate Rose Day on Valentine's Day. I would bring home all the roses I got and give it to my aunt, who would make bouquets out of them!"

But what about Varun? "It's been more than a year since we are married, but believe me, we hardly get time to spend with each other, forget about celebrations! Not sure what will happen this time," says the busy star.

Sharad and Kirti Kelkar

"I am with my wife for all 24 hours shooting for two serials starring us. So all the 365 days are Valentine's Day for us! February 14 is not special for me," says Sharad.

Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan

"When your lady love is with you always, every day is a Valentine Day!" Hiten exclaims. "So we don't celebrate anything special. However, that doesn't mean I am against couples who celebrate this. It's a matter of personal choice."
