Folk dances are all forgotten...

Just to quote an example not for comparison,

On India's dancing superstar...

there were two grls who made it to top 12..

one who was brilliant in kathak and did BW like no one before I have seen..extremely graceful, b'fule xpressions..

and there was another grl trained in Bharatnatyam..and the way she interpreted BW songs in BN..was mind blowing..sheer pure talent..

and yet..you don't see people voting for such people..

On IGT, or other shows..when folk dances are done they score less...

Q: Is it us the public? or is the judges on these relaity show ( quite a limted set of judges who are not trained in Indian dances barring Vaibhavi i guess) and are comfortable juding western dances..that influences maases and their likings and decisions??

Also, many judges ( as terrence claimed)...want to promote their dance forms through these platforms..( wanted to in the beginning when dance classes were still taking off and were not as popular as they are today)..

Any thoughts?

to make a mark you have to be first, different or bloody good in whatever you do... improvisation is the key.. there is only so much of improvisation one can do in traditional dance forms.
MJ 5 the winners brought something new to the table every time they stepped on stage.. so people waited for their performance.

loved the graceful kathak dancer and thought the bharatnatyam dancer was unique and damn good. but not much surprised to see them getting eliminated coz suspense and anticipation factor was not there. unlike say MJ 5 or loyola dream team.

just my few cents😊..

i still believe people will watch indian dances if only something new is brought on stage every time the performer steps on it... may be a little innovation and a little tadkas ala DID super moms did... Ariel bharatanatyam and dub step tandav.
