Quick question, really.

How do you describe the real thing called depression? Psychologically or otherwise, basically what you reckon out of your own experiences and those of people around you.

Also, I'd like to know if you think it can be battled. Share whatever you feel fits. I'd really like it.

PS Oh, this is a debate. Depressed people feel stuck and doomed, the saner lot begs to differ. Let's really see who makes more sense.

Interesting. Happiness lies within, where exactly? I feel that we create what we feel and decide how we wanna go about things even if it's hurtful. So, I think we decide to be depressed.

The term depression is used loosely. Basically depression is a state where one feels low, does not enjoy life, hopeless etc. This happens to almost everyone from time to time depending upon their life events. There is no treatment required.
Prolonged depression is called clinical depression and is the one that requires treatment. This is a serious issue and affects life activities. There are criterion to diagnose this condition.
@ prognosis. they resolve over time howeve recurrence is there.

I know that basic difference between when one says 'I'm depressed' and when a shrink actually agrees. 🤡😆 I just don't understand why we feel that way. Why are we unable to appreciate what's good, so very greatly?

I didnt get the srhink part. lol
In case of short term depression (not technically depression) its more of a low mood as a result of some life event. The etiology is not biological (though happens through biological pathways). For example when someone dies we get in bad mood and are less interested in life.
In case of clinical depression the etiology is biological and possibily related to chemical transmitters in neuronal synapses. One of the treatment there is anti-depressants.
In the end its complex issue and there is role of enviroment etc as well.

I meant I know the difference between loose depression and clinical depression.

So, what is the first step to clinical depression? It isn't purely biological, right?

Epiphany,
This is a highly complex issue. There is role of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, life events, secondary to medications, alcohol you name it. And yes biological facrors such as disbalance in nuerotransmitters.
Diagnosis of clinical depression is difficult. Its about ruling out other causes (secondary to medications etc). There a list of symptoms and one needs to have a certain symptoms from the list to be classified as person whith clinical depression.
Like many diseases the etiology is complex and not clear and perhaps result of interaction of several factors.
I suggest googling it as I cant remembe all the details right now

My grandma has major depression. She had tremors and couldn't write her name for awhile or hold coffee with one hand without dripping. She also got hypothyroid. I know it sounds bad but she has been on antidepressants in the past and these are what work for her. She is fine now and feels normal again.

I'm sorry to hear that. What did you say caused this to her? What triggered the depression, I mean?

After my grandpa's death. She was in shock for days and had a fear of being alone.
Losing someone you've lived with brings intense feelings of loneliness and emptiness.
When I heard that that he is no more. I felt like I've just been through an emotional earthquake, and the aftershocks are going to continue for a long time.
