Mumbai gang-rape: Sonam Kapoor protests

Mumbai police Sunday arrested the fifth and final member of a gang suspected of raping a photographer, a crime that reignited anger about women's safety in India following a similar attack last year.

The latest arrest came as the victim's family urged the nation, including the media, to continue to fight for justice "for all those victims and their families" who have gone through "the same hell as we have".

The family said it was "optimistic" their daughter's case would be fast -tracked and the "severest of punishments" handed down to those responsible, because of ongoing campaigns and a tougher sex crime law introduced earlier this year.

The group allegedly trapped and repeatedly raped the woman, said to be in her early 20s, on Thursday in an abandoned mill in an upmarket district of central Mumbai, where she was on assignment for a magazine.

The attack rekindled memories of the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi in December. That crime sparked nationwide protests and brought to the surface seething anger about violence against women in India.

The outrage led to a tougher anti-rape law that included increased punishment for sex offenders, who face the death penalty if a victim dies, and a broader definition of sexual assault.

On Sunday a Mumbai police team arrested the fifth suspect in New Delhi over the brutal attack in which the woman's male colleague was allegedly tied up with a belt and the woman attacked nearby.

The woman, reportedly an intern, is undergoing treatment at Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital, where staff said she was steadily improving.

"She is eating normally and her medical parameters are in control," the acting head of the hospital said in a statement.

The fifth suspect was tracked down after the arrest of four others since Friday, all in Mumbai. One arrested early on Sunday was identified by the Press Trust of India as Kasim Bangali.

You go Sonam! Something seriously needs to be done about this rape and misogynistic culture in India. Just the other day I was watching CNN, and a white female student who had gone to India for a study abroad program thrashed the country and its people for its misogynistic attitude. Some claims of hers were too outrageous such as Indian men oggling/staring (I think that's simply a habit of everyone there)...but she had valid claims also. She was traumatized by some of her experiences, like constant harassment and objectification. India as an entire country seems like a fail to me...how does a common man survive over there? I remember I had gone with my mom once to a govt. office (when we were on vacation there) and the person on the front desk goes "It's 2 o' clock now, come back tomorrow, we are done for the day". That motherf**ker came to work at 12 o ' clock, we had been waiting there for four hours and he is done for the day? There's no system, unless you bribe your way out and I've witnessed that. Anyway, CNN, MSNBC etc always highlight the negativity of India, ESPECIALLY, the rape culture and derogatory attitude toward women.

I am so glad I do not live there...it's a fact. I've some extended fam there...middle class, and their day to day lives seem to be such a drag. There are wonderful people there, there's a lot of history...but the entire system is broken and men/women need to change their attitudes.

PS - Do not give me a patriotic lecture. I speak from experience. I am ashamed I belong to a place that doesn't respect my mom, my sister, and myself. Also I am embarrassed that good Indian men have to face the brunt of a few nutcases.

^^^Umm...there are issues. But its not so bad either. I have lived in India most of my life and its fine. I am alive and life is smooth...more or less. Dont just go by media reports. if you want to experience India live here for atleast one year.
Coming to the while student...yes Indian men do have a fascination for white skin. The biggest example of it is Katrina. Many white women have horror stories to narrate. Travelling alone isnt safe in most sectors in India...south India is generally safer. I have travelled alone many times in the south without issues. But I wouldnt dare to travel alone without male company or a big group in the North. When foreigners come to India they must remember its not Europe or USA where women can travel alone without fear any time of the day or night. You need to take certain precautions and then you are fine-white skinned or not.
On topic its good to see Sonam not just pay lip service.

^ and that's not "so bad"? That seems pretty bad to me, and also very offensive that women of certain colors need to take precautions instead of the regular day to day harassers there being told to mend their ways. Granted I've not lived there, but getting work done there without some sort of bribe seems to be next to impossible,. I've had terrible experiences with govt. services there, and people are so slow to take any sort of action no matter what your problem may be. The front desk clerks there talk amongst themselves about their married lives while there's a line as far back as the door. Sure I've had terrible experiences with govt. agencies in my area of residence as well, but I know that if I am not happy with the service, I can go to a higher authority and someone will listen to my problem. There's order and professionalism at the end of the day. To get any sort of work done in India though, a person has to run to this office, that office, this office again...no one is willing to help. I am not judging an entire nation...but obviously I've a certain impression when all my experiences have been next to pathetic. There are some great people there...but then there's a larger number of folks that harass you when you walk on the street, there are inefficient people not willing to do their jobs, and there's simply no set order.

It's just ironic to me, that a nation so diverse and a nation as competitive as China, still cannot help out its ordinary citizens in an organized fashion. So much for progress. Sure they may be racing ahead economically and that's great,...but what about the basic problems that women, children, heck even men face that are not being met? It's time may be South India and North India united and corroborated ideas?

It's always the woman that needs to pick a different route so that she's not harassed, it's always the woman that needs to travel with a man in certain areas, it's always the victim that needs to be more cautious. Till this attitude remains, there's no way "change" will happen no matter how much the protesters chant.

Anyway, the Intl. media has just picked up more on the rape culture ever since the Delhi case. But this has been a problem since long.

It's not meant to offend, I am an Indian at the end of the day, no matter where I was born or where I live. It's sad though to acknowledge all of the stereotypes of your country...because most of them seem to be true from whatever firsthand experiences I've had. My South Indian friends have had much more pleasant experiences though in the places they have visited.

Yeah there is lot of red tape. We are trying to get that changed. It will. it will. People are getting lot more conscious about their rights.
About women...I dont think its true just of India...women have to be more cautious across the world no matter how advanced the country.
Yeah people have stereotypical views propogated by the media. I guess Indians also have stereotypical views of Westerna nations and their culture and citizens. That cant be changed unless you have enough exposure and education. I do hope next time you have a better stay.

I love Sonam for this.
While other actresses are gloating about being in the "crore club" or moaning about which movie they have signed and which actress they have replaced. Here is someone who is human enough to come out for a good cause. Well done.
