Our relationship shouldn't be monitored, says Aryan Vaid
Lata Jha
Thursday, January 25, 2007 23:00 IST

Now that Iqbal Khan has said goodbye to Ektaa Kapoor, Balaji Telefilms is hunting for a replacement for its daily show 'Karam Apna Apna' (Star Plus).

So who qualifies? The brief apparently is a magnetic fantasy figure for middle-class housewives. One name that instantly propped up was that of actor and now 'Bigg Boss' (Sony) celebrity Aryan Vaid who in the past played a gigolo in the film 'Mr 100 Percent'.

Balaji was keen about Aryan replacing Iqbal. "Regretfully, I've declined that offer," confesses Aryan. Incidentally, post 'Bigg Boss' that's not the only show Aryan has refused.

He has also declined lead roles in the show 'Durgesh Nandini' (Sony) and in Arjun Rampal's Chasing Ganesha Productions.

Aryan, still in the news for his will-he-won't-he liaison with 'Bigg Boss' inmate Anupama Verma is in two minds about television.

"I'm not sure whether I'm ready for television when my career in films is still undecided," he confesses.

He adds, "I've wrapped up my work in Anil Sharma's 'Apne' where I play the antagonist opposite the Deols - Dharamji (Dharmendra), Sunny and
Bobby. I underwent rigorous kick-boxing training for the part. Now I wait for the verdict."

Aryan's other film on-the-floors is 'Simran' where he co-stars with Pakistani actor Meera. "It's about astrology and how it affects relationships in present times," says Aryan.

"I'm being offered obscene amounts of money to do television, all thanks to the exposure 'Bigg Boss' offered me.

I'm presently negotiating one serial for Milind Soman's software company. It only requires four months of my time. Besides it's an out-and-out romantic subject. I don't mind a bit of added romance in my life," says Aryan cheekily.

That brings us to the status quo of his relationship with Anupama. Aryan gets tight-lipped.

"Enough damage has been done by the consistent speculation. Agreed our friendship started on camera. That doesn't mean it should continue being monitored," he says.

Apparently, the lady wants the relationship to take its own course.

Amit Sadh is not angry

Though contestants on Sony's Bigg Boss made loads of allegations against each other and had only bad things to say about those in the house, Amit Saad seems to be an exception. "I know some people said that I am a nobody, but I am not angry with them. I am only 26, I have my whole life ahead of me to do something. Without the fame too I am a superstar, I am Neeru's superstar," laughs Amit.

Who will be the winner?

The countdown has begun…with only a few days left for the grand finale on Bigg Boss. Rakhi Sawant who made a wild card entry got ousted in a surprise eviction on Wednesday. Also unknown to the inmates, Kashmera Shah who sneaked her way in to the house was only a house guest (not a contestant) and has now retraced her steps in the same way.
Now only three inmates are left in the fray for the final knock-out round. Will Carol Gracias lose out after having survived till this moment? Has Ravi Kissen
lost his fan following due to his 'friendship' with the women in the house? Will Rahul Roy's calm demeanour help him walk away with the prize money? There will be one amongst these who will be laughing all the way to the bank!
Bigg Boss was launched with great fanfare and now after 80 days of high drama it is highly unlikely to leave on a sad and emotional note. Watch out for some surprise guests who are all geared to set the stage on fire!
Catch all the entertainment in store for the grand finale of Bigg Boss on Saturday, January 27 on Sony Entertainment Television.

Bigg Deal

It's been one year since Endemol set foot in India and with seven shows on air, the company called for a celebration. Rajesh Kamat, Managing Director, Endemol, India speaks about the success story and future plans...
Of the shows that you have produced in India which has been your most successful one?
Undoubtedly, Bigg Boss on Sony because it has succeeded in setting a trend and changing the perspectives of a reality show. The next one is Laughter Challenge show which is doing extremely well on STAR One even in the second season. You'll agree it is not easy to bring a dose of laughter week after week.
Bigg Boss may be the most talked-about show but it isn't high on the TRP charts...
I am aware of that. However, since the last three weeks TAM has tabled the elite panel report which comprises the top 3 per cent of the socio-economic strata where-in the show features amongst the top three in Mumbai and Delhi. Having said that I know the show hasn't cut across a Mahu village in Lucknow or UP. The concept is such that it has early adaptors and then others jump onto the bandwagon. But at a railway station when passengers are alighting and a voice says Big Boss ne bola hai ki aap utarjaye you know the show has created a brand. It feels good.
Who amongst the four contestants do you think will make it to the end?
I think Ravi and Rakhi will make it to the finale. Carol and Rahul are likely to be dropped out in the forthcoming episodes. After that it is upto the audience who they will crown as the winner.
When are you planning a season II of Bigg Boss?
It is very tempting for the broadcaster and us to milk the cash cow by going in for season II now. The house is already there and many celebrities are willing to get themselves enrolled because they have seen the current inmates gaining iconic status. But we have decided to space it out and will back after nine months.
The other hi-profile show which did not do as well as expected was Heartbeat. What do you think went wrong?
I think the concept just didn't click with the audience. Also, we had to face the brunt of distribution problems and in the months when Heartbeat was on, the channel was blacked out in Mumbai and Delhi. If you lose out on the intial episodes, the viewers will never switch on.
All the same, I believe if everything had gone fine, it's response would have been similar to that of Bigg Boss. It would have worked in the urban markets. Even Deal Ya No Deal didn't turn out to be a big deal here...
I am quite surprised with that because it is third in terms of earning revenue for Endemol. Though we did not produce it in India, personally, I think it didn't work here because it was over-dramatised. It lost its balance, with shots of people crying daily on the show. Also, you can't have a rickshaw driver on the show every other day. I think people just switched-off from it.
Are you happy with the response to Fame X on SAB TV? Wouldn't it have done better on Sony?
Given a choice, I would prefer Sony because SAB doesn't have that kind of penetration. Yet, we are extremely gung-ho about the show because it is picking up ratings for the channel. If your show helps in turning around the fortune or garnering shares for a channel it helps in the long-term.
What about Fear Factor. Are you looking at bringing on the second season?
Definitely, but this time we will be launching Extreme Fear Factor which is a slightly different concept. There will be a boot camp, something akin to a military camp, and the contestants will have to be rugged enough to do one or two stunts a day. If they are not upto it, one by one they will get eliminated. In Fear Factor we had a mix of common man and celebrities, this time we will go in for celebrities only.
Besides Fear Factor, any other shows in the pipeline?
Yes, we will be launching two game shows One Vs Hundred and Set For Life. Both these shows have just picked up in USA and we will be starting them in India over the next four months.
Could you give us an idea about their formats?
One Vs Hundred is a evolved version of KBC. There will be one player in the hotseat and he will be pitted against 100 contestants. The play starts with $1000. A question will be posed to the player in the hotseat. Suppose he gets it right and 50 other contestants also give the correct answer, the remaining 50 who have given the wrong answer will be eliminated. The player in the hotseat thus gets $50,000. His target is to strike down the contestants and make the maximum money. The hotseat player can decide the kind of question he wants.
Set For Life is a simple game. There will be 15 steps and each will have a red or white light. If the contestant steps on a red light he has to go down and white light will take him up. Every step has a number. On the first step, the contestant may get a check of one lakh each for six months, the second step may fetch him two lakhs every month for 10 months and so on. The only twist to the game is that relatives or friends of the contestant sitting in a secret room can put a stop to his game by pressing a button. So even if the contestant wants to go further he will not be able to do so. It's a question of emotional quotient and trust. After an year and seven shows in India, what is your take on the Indian viewer?
We as production houses tend to over-intellectualise what the common man wants.
Actually, it is very simple. The housewives watch soaps and they like it. What they want is different flavours. So, we will tweak the reality format to give them talent-hunts, game shows and adventure.

Cooling off? Rahul Roy kills time in the swimming pool

After being alternately terrorised, helped, made to laugh and then cry by Bigg Boss, the occupants of the house are, in their last days, dying to meet the person behind the voice that has been booming out of the speakers at them for the past three months. We wouldn't mind knowing too, reports Sowmya Rajaram.
Rahul and Ravi express their desire to meet their headmaster. They say that the voice has become an integral part of their life and they will fear this voice for the rest of their life, wondering if it is going to wake them from their sleep one morning and admonish them the next, for not completing their tasks on time.
The three are also longing to meet the others evictees. The last few days inside the house are getting positively unbearable for all of them, with everyone daydreaming about life outside the house of Bigg Boss.
And it doesn't help that the master himself isn't giving them any new tasks. In fact, he has the three in splits today, when he sends them a blank task sheet with nothing written on it. Carol cannot stop laughing, but later, Bigg Boss makes an announcement that since the three have passed all tests and have been branded good, they have the freedom to choose their own task for the day. So Rahul and Ravi come up with a task with its own rules and activities. It is called Bigg Boss Ke Ghar Mein Laash. Nice to see that three months inside the house haven't affected your sense of humour, guys!
Meanwhile, Carol passes her time by giving herself a manicure and pedicure. Ravi completes seven km on the treadmill. Rahul sticks to swimming to relieve his boredom and tension.

Mika votes out Rakhi
By: Vickey Lalwani

Mika and Rakhi Sawant
Mika Singh is raising a toast to Rakhi Sawant's ouster from Bigg Boss, as he has played a major role in getting her evicted on Wednesday.

He personally sent out 50,000 messages to ensure that Sawant is shown the door. "My friends, relatives and fans made up for at least another 2,50,000 messages.

We had gone on a relentless flurry of sending out messages for the past few days and I am happy that it paid off," he beams.

Liar, liar

Mika says he couldn't tolerate Rakhi flourishing in Bigg Boss because she did not keep her promise of withdrawing the molestation case against him.
When the duo buried the hatchet on the Zee show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (in the episode where Rakhi was featured) after Mika publicly apologised, Rakhi promised that she would clear him of all charges (just in case you've forgotten, Rakhi accused Mika of forcibly kissing her at his birthday party in Andheri in June 2006).

"After the show, I called her a couple of times but she kept dilly-dallying. Finally, I gave up. I understood that she had given me a false promise. That girl is a liar."

Mika is now repenting that he went for Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. "I attended the show only because Rakhi's mother (Jaya Sawant) personally requested me at least three times.

I have high regard for that lady, but I feel very bad when Rakhi talks to her rudely. Once I was at Rakhi's house and she kept telling her mother 'tu chup karke baith'!"

'I'm not wrong'

Mika says Rakhi does not realise that his supporters have been instrumental in her stage shows facing permission problems in many cities.

"My supporters are very angry that she filed a baseless case against me and is showing no signs of withdrawing it. I have a lot of Bajrang Dal supporters.

The case holds no water. Kashi is one place where no controversial person is allowed to perform. But even after Rakhi filed a complaint against me, I have done three shows there. That clearly shows who is right and who is wrong."

Mika adds that Rakhi accepted Bigg Boss only because her stage shows have gone haywire in the recent past. "She could have done about 30 shows in the time which she stayed locked in Bigg Boss house.

Assuming that she gets about Rs 2.5 lakh on an average per show, that amounts to Rs 75 lakh and could possibly touch Rs 1 crore. Surely, Sony must not have given her even near that amount!"

The Rakhi-Mika saga is not yet over as Mika is coming up with new ways of avenging her. The latest incident concerns Rakhi's expulsion from Bigg Boss as Mika openly admits that he sent 3 lakh SMS' to vote Rakhi out of the show. "Rakhi caused an irreconcilable loss to my image as a celebrity in the industry, so I have decided to pay her back with the same coin," says the singer who used the kiss episode in his latest album, which turned out to be a great hit. "Gone are those days when you need to turn a deaf ear to the mischief makers," says Mika, who thanks his friends who sent about 55,000 messages to Bigg Boss to express their consent in voting Rakhi out.

But why did he think of taking revenge in such a manner? He confidently replies, "I did not want her to encash on her popularity with the masses. Since I have been closely associated with her, I know she can go to any extent to gain admiration and adulation." He further explains, "We had also patched up during an episode of Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai in front of millions of audiences, but that was more or less fake from her side as she did not withdraw the court case." He firmly says, "If she can act stubborn, so can I. Hence I have decided to teach her a lesson and today I am really satisfied that she has been thrown out of the much-hyped reality show.

After weeks of crying endlessly on the show, actress Rupali Ganguly finally got evicted from Bigg Boss. Touted as a "homesick cry baby", Rupali's desperation to get out of the show was visible on screen for the past few weeks. And the immense joy she felt on hearing about her eviction was evident by the way she happily left. "I have no words to describe how I feel. I can't believe that I am going to meet my family, I am free," said Rupali immediately after her eviction.

And she did not leave the show without gaining anything. She found a friend in model Carol Gracias. "Carol is an amazing person. She is a real gem and a terrific woman. She has always been there to support me truly. I will treasure her friendship," she adds. What about on Rakhi Sawant? Rupali shares an "awful experience" with the item girl. According to her, Rakhi is a person who does not see beyond herself. "Rakhi can ditch anyone any time. She just wants to get noticed and be in the news and for that she can cross any limits. I couldn't live with her under the same roof any more," says Rupali.

Rupali was always seen as a caring person, who was straight-forward in her approach and at times, even brutally honest. However, she is upset about her relationship with Amit, whom she treated like a younger brother. She says, "I am upset with Amit. I didn't expect this from him." As for who will emerge as the winner, she has just one name: Carol. "Carol should be the winner. She presents her true self on the show and therefore deserves to win," concludes Rupali.

Who'll survive in the Bigg Boss's den?

The climax is inching forwards. With two more days to go for the grand finale of Sony's voyeuristic reality show - Bigg Boss, speculations are simmering about who'll win the coveted prize money of 50 lakhs. With only three contestants: Carol, Ravi and Rahul to compete, the show promises loads of drama along with the ousted members too being roped in for the D day.

So being party to the speculations, we try putting all the three in-house members under our scanner. Let's start with Bihar's shaan, Ravi Kishen. He is one man who has braved the show with his much famous politicking. Not only has he kept the show alive with his ishtyle and bindaas attitude, but also provided the humour element in abundance with his trademark repartees. But ex-inmate (and ex-pal if we may say) Rupali Ganguly differs by saying, "Though I don't like Ravi a lot, but I must admit that he has been a consistent player on the show. I pray he doesn't win since Carol deserves it better than him." Isn't she talking about the same Ravi whom she had voiced as her only friend before entering the Bigg Boss' den?

Rahul Roy with his characteristic calmness has earned the nickname of 'baba'. Like a sage, he maintains a dignified silence in the face of turmoil. But his chances of winning the title are extremely low as he isn't very popular with the masses unlike Ravi. This is our say, but his friend Aryan Vaid puts these kind words for him, "I think its Rahul Roy who will win since he has been the least controversial of the lot."

Carol Gracias is the other strong contender for the title. Adds Rupali Ganguly, "I am confident about Carol emerging as a winner. All through her stay she has been fair and forgiven people for their trespasses. I think she deserves to win the title." (In the name of friendship, huh!)

Along with Rupali, Carol also has Rakhi Sawant's support who got evicted last night from the show. She says, "Carol should win the game as there has not been a single day when she has not cooked or cleaned the house. So, what if she is not my friend." (Right said Rakhi )

While the grand finale will witness the winner walk away with the envied prize money, others will not go home disappointed either. Their popularity on the show has earned them enough offers to keep them busy, as the recently ousted Rakhi Sawant commented on the show, "It's ok if I have lost in lakhs, now I'll earn in crores."

As for the grand finale, all the other contestants will get together to give a memorable round up on the show. Baba Sehgal is ready with a hilarious spoof on his fellow inmates. Aryan Vaid promises to give a rocking performance minus Anupama (tch..tch, spoil sport). Kashmira Shah has sneaked away to rehearse for her item number. Cry baby Rupali too will gyrate onstage (after all it was Rakhi who had once trained her on BB). So can the original item girl be far behind? Of course Rakhi is all set to burn the stage with her trademark oomph! But the real show stopper will definitely be the performance by love struck Amit Sadh and his lady love Neeru Bajwa.

So, let's see whose bets come true. The wait is not long now. With the trio all geared up for the big event and the performances waiting to happen, we hope that the show will not have its audience yawning this time at least.
