Once I got a call from a producer who said he had a very nice role for me. When I asked him what it was, he said, "It is the main role." Not being satisfied with the answer, I asked for more details. "It's a show where you will be given fabulous clothes and you'll look great!" the producer added in a promising tone. And he actually thought that was temptation enough for me, for he then asked me about the availability of my dates and even began discussing my fees! The details of the role, the script, the director… obviously these didn't seem important enough to him to discuss.

I once got a call where I was offered a role that would apparently "change my fortune". When I asked the producer for details about the role, he said, "Well, it all depends on which studio we get to shoot at. If we shoot at Versova, you will play a rich character. If we shoot elsewhere, you will have to play a middle-class character." I was shocked to hear this and asked if there was a storyline. "Well, that depends on the situation," he replied. And no, I didn't ask him for any further details!
Another time, while shooting for another serial, I was told to jump off the third floor for a scene. When I asked if safety measures were being taken, the person in charge reassured me, "Don't worry, this scene will be shot very beautifully, you will become famous after this scene."

Once I got a strange call and a stranger offer from a production assistant. "Madam, it is a very nice role," he said. When I asked for details, he replied, "It is a fantastic role which will spread over two entire episodes! It is for a wedding scene, where you will play the bride's distant aunt." Imagine a role so fantastic that it actually has a life of two episodes! These production assistants simply try to take us actors for a ride. When asked for details sometime they actually say that they can't divulge anything yet. And we are expected to accept roles offered thus!

I have often got calls where producers have claimed that their roles will make me 'Amitabh Bachchan'. These producers never talk about the role or the script. I usually ignore such calls. And I always insist on personal meetings for narrations of roles.

I received a really weird call from a production house a couple of days ago, where I was offered a role in a sitcom. He invited me to be a guest for a particular episode of the sitcom. Which was fine, until the person calling added, by way of temptation, "Your guest role is so good, that you will almost become the main lead when you play it." It was ridiculously funny! I guess that's the way production houses take actors for a ride.

I've got calls where producers have insisted on discussing the availability of my dates before giving me details of my role. Very often they simply want to book our dates so that we don't give them away to other production houses. The role comes into play only after that, as a secondary issue!
