So sick of tired of Romeo and Juliet adaptations!🤢
If they have to copy Shakespear, why not try and do a version of Hamlet or King Lear or Much Ado about nothing and so many more that he has written!
R&J has been overkilled already, in several different languages! How much freshness can you give to the same old love story over and over again?😕
PS: I personally find QSQT to be the best adaptation of R&J...and Ishaqzaade was also a good take on it!

@bold: True that. Cast, music, story everything was in place for this movie..
ishaqzaade as well though i just couldnt like Zoya accepting Perma again, but this was lot better than all the other R&J adaptations and Parineeti and Arjun bth were very good in the movie..

Film Review: Issaq will challenge your patience and drown you in your own misery!

Friday, Jul 26, 2013, 16:58 IST | Agency: DNA

Neither Prateik nor Amyra have the right spark to play these roles; their pairing seems odd as they hardly have any chemistry on screen.

Film: Issaq
Cast: Prateik Babbar, Amyra Dastur, Evelyn Sharma, Makarand Deshpande
Director: Manish Tewary
Rating: *1/2

What's it about
A desi adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Issaq is set against the backdrop of Benares is a love story of Rahul Mishra (Prateik Babbar) and Bachhi Kashyap (Amyra Dastur).

Both belong to warring families with burly moustached men who believe in the law of the gun. The first half introduces us to a plethora of characters and sub plots that have minimal importance to the main story.

Rahul and Bacchi do the rehearsed routine of courtship and indulge in lot of phone calls, silly banter, calling each other names and awkward kisses! Prashant Narayan's track as the rebel leader who wants ownership of the sandpits owned by the families is included merely to raise the bloodshed on screen.

What's hot
Ravi Kissen emerges as the sole survivor of this epic mess! Despite a clich ridden character, he manages to infuse enough fire in his role to make the right noise. Similarly Rajeshwari Sachdev too impresses in her role as the seductress who changes the game towards the end.

What's not
When supporting characters impress you more than the lead pair, there is a reason to worry. Neither Prateik nor Amyra have the right spark to play these roles. Their pairing seems odd as they hardly have any chemistry on screen.

Most of the dramatic scenes fall flat because the actors fail to engage you with their craft. Tewary adds too much in too little time for us to grasp. It feels like nothing but a travesty of the original work in every sense.

What to do

Issaq will challenge your patience and drown you in your own misery!

ISSAQ is being touted as the Indian adaption of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. At least Manish Tiwary has been honest here in revealing the source of his story line. But adapting it to suit Bollywood cinematic sensibilities and the times we live in takes another level of creativity. What Tiwary does here is bring the level of Shakespeare's lovers to something akin to a joke. Even Bunty and Pinky from LOVE STORY (Kumar Gaurav's debut film) would be laughing at the foolishness of this 'Ishq'.

Boy falls in love with a girl 'just like that'. Both families are at loggerheads. High on bhang, one holi day, boy kisses girl. And girl, like one waiting to be 'taken', surrenders almost immediately. No spine in her character. Later, we realize that she is a virgin! (You have to hear the way this line is delivered to the boy). So is that a good enough reason to allow an unknown to smooch you and you break into cartwheels? Oh yes, and boy is better than Spiderman when it comes to climbing walls and running on parapets. He does so without the 'spiderman gear'.

The plot is like a pack of cards stacked one above the other; a slight hint of a gentle breeze and it blows away. The acting too is something you see in BAJATEY RAHO... Even Ravi Kissen is present here after playing the baddie in that so-called revenge comedy. For a moment I thought I was watching BAJATEY RAHO PART II.

Tiwary has given no depth to any character. Everyone is treated on the surface level and at times you get the feeling that you are watching something on stage, not on screen. There is not a single character which stands out and the naxal angle is just shoved in.

Prateik needs a complete makeover. He continues to act like a boor in love. Was this film shot just after his EKK DEEWANA THA? What happened to the talented lad we saw in JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA... His act works best for films like MY FRIEND PINTO.

The lad needs to take time out, watch the DVDs of his movies and sit with an 'acting counsellor' and come back with scripts that suit his image. Or else, directors with vision will have to test him with characters that challenge an actor.

Amrya Dastur, who makes her debut, matches her skills with that of rest of the cast. And that is saying a lot for a newcomer.

ISSAQ is a love story set in troubled times with troubled families. ISHAQZAADE was the same. Dig out a DVD of this Arjun Kapoor-Parineeti Chopra starrer instead.

Shakespeare would be proud of Habib Faisal for fleshing out Parma and Zoya, and adapting it so beautifully to Romeo & Juliet.

Film review: Issaq

Mumbai Mirror | Jul 26, 2013, 05.21 PM IST
By Karan Anshuman

Film: Issaq
Director: Manish Tiwary
Cast: Prateik Babbar, Amyra Dastur, Malini Awasthi, Makrand Deshpande, Ravi Kishan, Neena Gupta, Prashant Narayanan Certification: U/A Rating: *1/2
In one of the weirdest character entries/introductions, Prateik in Issaq is seen in a flashback montage defending himself against Naxals and getting shot in the foot. This is intercut with him running at a frenetic pace for no apparent reason on random greenscreen'd footage, and finally jumping into a river. Next, he's seducing a tourist, who's spiritually exploring herself. Why does he jump? No idea. What happened with his foot? No idea. Is there a connection with the woman? No, but at least we're given a character insight into 'Romeo'.

As you might've guessed, director Manish Tiwary's second outing after Dil Dosti Etc., Issaq, is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and set in Banaras. The Montagues and Capulets transform into gangland families Mishras and Kashyaps, and the characters' analogy is more or less maintained. But it is a strange, heavy-handed film that staunchly refuses to entertain until the very end (and even here, you know exactly what's coming). Perhaps it comes at a wrong time when Bollywood is OD'ing (overdosing) on UP-based romances and the audience is tiring. Ishaqzaade is not entirely dissimilar and, even though it's a middling movie on its own, looks every bit a classic when compared to Issaq.

Issaq requires tremendous effort and patience to get through (let alone like), and in the end, it is simply not worth it.

The makers strive hard for some kind of authenticity, even subtitling some of the dialogue into English for our convenience. As if the rest of the film - full of dark blood, golden guns, and epic moustaches - makes perfect sense. The romance is simplistic and instant while the rest of the screenplay elements try to complicate and confound. Both are often faked and lack conviction. Sure, certain individual scenes rise above the placid performances and wearisome writing, but mediocrity can homogenize everything in its path. The long-winded Naxal track especially, seems to be more of a personal statement and sentiment of the director that is worthy of a tweet or two at the most. It has no place in the movie.

Prateik has had one too many average performances and even in Issaq, he uses his deranged smile and tinny voice to get by most scenes. It does not work any more. Luckily, the director's given him some parkour moves inspired from Assassin's Creed to cover up for it. Amyra Dastur's got potential. Now we need to see her in a film.

I was going to write exactly that!😆 This has to be one of the worst reviewed films in recent times! And especially in a year, which has seen a majority of great film which good positive reviews!
Strange...because the trailers and promos were pretty impressive in their own way, but the film seems to be really, really shoddy!😕 Else, there would have been atleast some good reviews!
