Hi

I just watched the Jan 11 video and noticed that everyone touched the grandmother's feet for blessings except the 3 girls. Why is that?

Thanks

because in hindu "vaishnav" religion, young girls of the house do not touch anyone's feet. infact I don't think any girls do...I'm not sure why Menka, and Savitri did(I think that is a blooper on their part). Only boys touch feet in Gujrati vaishnav religion.

Menka and Savitri do because they are the bahus (daughters-in-law) of the house. That is, they came from other families to this house. They touch the grandmother's feet because she is their mother-in-law. The daughters are girls born into this family and therefore they do not touch feet of anyone in the family they were born into (i.e. their maayka). In their in-laws' place, they will touch feet of elder in-laws but in their birth family, they won't. The reason behind this is that girls born in the family are considered to be the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. It is considered a sin to have the goddess touch your feet so daughters of the family don't touch feet. Hope this clarifies your confusion.

Of course, these days, the quaint tradition of touching feet has pretty much disappeared altogether, which is a pity. People don't understand that it's a way to seek blessings from older people...

hey i don't know much about this vaisnavi religion, but isn't that weird. the girls are treated like trash, they have no importance at all in the garodia family, their grandmother hate them, but still they don't have to touch feet because they are ghar ke lakshmi??? pretty conflicting isn't it?
